Houston to Overhaul Heavy Trash Collection Process Amid Delays and Staffing Shortages
The City of Houston is set to introduce a new method for collecting heavy trash, marking a significant shift from the current scheduled collection days system. Under the revamped approach, residents will be able to request heavy trash collection by calling 311, with Solid Waste saying it aims to tackle delays and staffing shortages that have plagued the city.
The decision was made in response to the previous system's inability to sustain itself at a citywide scale. According to Solid Waste Director Larius Hassen, crews were often driving through streets without heavy trash, only to spend weeks on routes with minimal collection needs. This practice contributed to delays and backlogs.
With the new system, residents will be able to schedule heavy trash pickup by contacting 311. Solid Waste will then call or email the resident to arrange a collection appointment. The department claims that this approach will enable them to allocate resources more effectively and address service delays.
Under the revised system, collection is expected to take place within five working days of the scheduled date. Customer service will verify completion with photos and notify residents upon completion.
Hassen believes that this change will help reallocate resources where they are needed most. The new program allows for data collection on heavy trash requests, providing valuable insights into staffing needs and helping the department optimize its operations.
Until the new process tentatively begins on March 2, the current schedule will remain in place. However, with this overhaul, Houston residents can expect a more efficient and effective heavy trash collection service.
The revamped system is seen as a step forward for the City of Houston's waste management, aiming to improve customer service while reducing delays and backlogs.
