A dramatic scene unfolded in Oakland on Tuesday when an AC Transit bus crashed into a building at the intersection of Foothill and 68th Avenue, but fortunately, no one was seriously injured. The accident occurred just before 1:30 p.m., sending shockwaves through the community.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as "brutal" with sparks flying, water splashing everywhere, and people screaming. Owner of Minute Muffler Service across the street from the crash site, Aurelio Gomes, said he was worried that the bus might catch fire or the building would collapse. He likened the sound to a helicopter falling out of the sky.
Gomes also noted that this is a busy intersection where many drivers often run red lights, which raised concerns about safety record of AC Transit in Oakland.
According to AC Transit officials, the bus was crossing the intersection when it collided with a small Nissan SUV. Police are still investigating who had the green light at the intersection.
Firefighters played a crucial role in extracting the driver from the bus after the collision. According to the agency spokesperson, Robert Lyles, the damage was extensive but thanks to the slow speed of the bus, there were no severe injuries.
