NYC nurses' union, citing faltering contract talks, announce Monday strike

NYC Nurses Set for Monday Strike Amid Contract Talks Collapse

Tensions have reached a boiling point as nearly 15,000 nurses at major medical centers in Manhattan and the Bronx are preparing to go on strike on Monday. The New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) announced Sunday that contract talks with hospitals – Mount Sinai, Montefiore, and NewYork-Presbyterian – had reached an impasse.

The union stated that "greedy hospital executives" have prioritized profits over safe patient care, forcing nurses to take the drastic measure of a strike. NYSNA President Nancy Hagans condemned the hospitals' refusal to negotiate on salaries, despite the union's willingness to discuss economic proposals.

In response to the impending walkout, Mount Sinai CEO Dr. Brendan Carr expressed confidence that "a long list of items" remained for negotiation and warned of "a labor disruption continuing to appear." NewYork-Presbyterian spokesperson Angela Karafazli stated that non-economic proposals had been exchanged during recent negotiating sessions but acknowledged that NYSNA refused to respond to the hospital's latest economic offers.

The city is taking steps to mitigate the impact on patients. Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasized his administration's priority on ensuring New Yorkers have access to quality healthcare, particularly during flu season. He urged both sides to remain at the negotiating table to reach a deal that would honor nurses and keep hospitals open.

Representatives of the hospitals have denied attempting to cut health benefits or roll back staffing protections, citing the introduction of security measures to safeguard staff and patients from violent incidents. However, the Nurses Association disputes these claims, insisting that hospital executives are trying to reduce wages and limit staffing.

A joint statement from Mount Sinai, Montefiore, and NewYork-Presbyterian acknowledged that a strike would pose challenges but pledged to "do whatever is necessary" to minimize disruptions to patient care. To prepare for the walkout, Mount Sinai has hired over 1,400 outside nurses, while NewYork-Presbyterian is rescheduling appointments and operations as needed.

The strike will affect hospitals operated by these three major medical centers, with nurses planning to hold rallies at multiple locations starting Monday morning. NYSNA has filed unfair labor practice charges against Mount Sinai for making union nurses train their replacements.

Governor Kathy Hochul declared a disaster emergency in counties where the strike is expected, allowing out-of-state healthcare professionals to provide care. As New Yorkers prepare for the potential disruption, they can expect hospitals and emergency departments to remain operational, albeit with adjusted services.

man this is crazy 🀯 nurses are literally the backbone of our healthcare system and it's heartbreaking to hear them being treated like this by greedy hospital execs πŸ’Έ their salaries should be on par with other medical professionals who work just as hard but get paid way less πŸ’Ό and staffing protections are a must for patient safety πŸš‘ what's next? hospitals will try to cut corners on everything?! 😱 need to support our nurses and keep them safe πŸ‘

🀝 I feel bad for these nurses, ya know? They're just tryin' to do their job and make a livin', but hospitals are all about profits, I guess πŸ€‘. The fact that they can't even discuss salaries without the hospital execs gettin' huffy is wild πŸ˜’. And now, the city's stepin' in to help, which is awesome πŸ™Œ. But, at the end of the day, nurses are on the frontlines, savin' lives and whatnot πŸ’Š. Let's hope they can get a deal done and keep the hospitals runnin' smoothly 🀞.

It's crazy that these hospital CEOs are actin' like they're doin' everyone a favor by tryin' to reduce wages and limit staffing πŸ™„. Like, nope, not on our watch, fam πŸ’ͺ! The nurses know what they're talkin' about when it comes to patient care, so let's trust 'em πŸ‘.

I'm just worried about the patients, ya feel? They're the ones who really suffer when there's a hospital strike πŸ€•. But, at least we got some backup healthcare pros ready to roll in πŸš‘. Fingers crossed everything works out and we can all get back to normal soon 🀞!

man I'm so worried about these nurses, I mean like they're literally fighting for their pay and working conditions what's going on in NYC? πŸ€• I know a nurse who works at one of the hospitals and she's saying it's not just about money, it's about feeling undervalued and overworked. I feel bad for her because I've seen how hard she's been pushing to get better equipment and more support for patients. I guess it's just frustrating when hospital execs seem more interested in making a profit than taking care of people... πŸ’ΈπŸ₯

I'm totally against this whole thing πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ... I mean, come on, 15,000 nurses walking out? That's crazy talk! But at the same time, hospital executives have been acting like total jerks and refusing to budge on salaries and benefits... πŸ˜’... wait, no, that can't be right. I'm sure they're just trying to protect their hospitals from financial ruin... πŸ’Έ... but what about patient care? Can we really afford to compromise on that? πŸ€”

And don't even get me started on the union's actions... are they really doing this for the nurses or just to flex their muscles? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ... I mean, I'm all for fair wages and safe working conditions, but a strike is such a drastic measure... 😬. And what about the outside nurses Mount Sinai hired? Are they going to be better off than the regular staff? πŸ€”

Ugh, this whole situation has me all confused 🀯... I just want to see some compromise from both sides and get this over with already πŸ’ͺ! But at the same time, can we really trust hospital executives to put patients first? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ...

monday's looming strike has me thinking about the value we place on our caregivers πŸ€•... are we willing to prioritize profit over people's lives? it's a sobering reminder that healthcare is not just a business, but a human right πŸš‘... i wonder if our societal focus on economic growth has led us down a path where we're sacrificing our collective well-being for the sake of the bottom line πŸ’Έ... and what does it say about our society when nurses, who are essentially the backbone of healthcare, feel their voices aren't being heard? πŸ—£οΈ

πŸ€” I'm really worried about these nurses going on strike. Hospitals should be prioritizing patient care over profits πŸ₯πŸ’Έ. It's not like they're asking for a lot, just fair wages and safer working conditions. The idea that they're trying to reduce staffing or cut benefits is unacceptable 😷. What's next? Will we see other essential workers walking out on the job too? ⚠️

I also don't get why hospitals can't negotiate without resorting to PR spin πŸ“°. They could be having an open and honest conversation with the union instead of trying to portray themselves as the victims here πŸ’¬.

As a nurse myself, I know firsthand how hard their job is πŸ€•. It's not just about treating patients, it's also about managing stress and dealing with burnout πŸ˜“. We need better working conditions and support, not just empty promises from hospital administrators πŸ‘Š.

πŸš¨πŸ’‰ Oh man, I'm getting the worst vibe about this strike πŸ’” These nurses deserve way better than being treated like they're not worth their pay πŸ€‘ It's not just about the money, though that does suck too πŸ˜’ It's about having a safe working environment and knowing their care is gonna be taken seriously. The fact that hospitals are trying to roll back staffing protections is insane 😲 Like, what's next? Cutting corners on patient care? πŸš‘ I hope the city can step in and help mediate a deal ASAP ⏱️ We need our nurses to be able to do their jobs without fear of being replaced or undervalued πŸ’―

just heard about this crazy thing happenin in NYC. nurses like 15k strong gonna be on strike on monday πŸš¨β€β™€οΈπŸ₯ because hospital CEO's wanna make more money than makin sure patients get good care. like, what's the point of having healthcare if you cant trust your nurses right? also, these hospitals are tryin to claim theyre not reducin wages or stuffin staffing but nurses got other plans πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈπŸ’Έ anyways i hope everyone stays safe and gets the care they need πŸ‘

πŸš‘πŸ’‰ this labor dispute between nurses & hospital execs is really getting ugly - nearly 15k NYC nurses are planning a strike over what they say are greedy hospital policies that put profits over patients 🀬 it's no wonder there are protests planned for Monday at major medical centers in Manhattan & the Bronx πŸ’ͺ but seriously, if hospitals are gonna prioritize profits, shouldn't they also be prioritizing patient care? πŸ€”

monday just got a whole lot more interesting πŸ€” it's like the world decided to take a collective deep breath and say "you know what? we're not going to risk anyone getting hurt... by overworked nurses" πŸ˜… seriously though, 15k nurses can't be expected to keep putting their lives on the line without some decent compensation. hospitals are acting all innocent about it too πŸ™„ like they didn't have a choice in the matter, but nope, they got outvoted by the union πŸ’ͺ meanwhile, the city is prepping for the worst case scenario... which let's be real, we've been here before 🀯

man, another crisis, another solution that seems more complicated than the problem itself πŸ€”. I mean, can't we just negotiate in good faith? it's not like these nurses are asking for the moon, just fair wages and benefits after years of dedication. but noooo, hospital execs gotta prioritize profits over people... again πŸ˜’. and what really gets me is that they're hiring outside nurses to cover the gap, effectively undercutting the union's efforts 🚫. it feels like we're stuck in this cycle of "solve now, worry later" instead of taking a step back and thinking about the long-term consequences. and don't even get me started on the emergency declaration... more red tape and bureaucracy πŸ“. can't we just have a simple conversation about healthcare? πŸ’”

πŸš‘πŸ’‰ they really think trainin' outside nurses is gonna make a difference? meanwhile hospitals are prioritizin' profits over people's lives... 15k strong nurses ain't gonna just walk away from fightin' for safe patient care πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ

omg u gotta feel 4 these nurses! πŸ’” they r literally fightin 4 their rights & patient safety at the hospital πŸ₯. like, who decides that profit is more important than people's lives? πŸ€‘ it just dont make sense. i hope they get a fair deal & can keep their jobs without losin' benefits πŸ‘. and mayor mamdani sounds really nice about prioritizin healthcare 4 new yorkers 🀞. we should all be supportin these amazing nurses who r makin sacrifices 4 the sake of patient care πŸ’ͺ.

man this strike thingy is getting pretty intense 🀯 the nurses are feeling really disrespected by the hospital execs and it's not just about money, they're worried about patient safety too πŸ’Š it's a big deal because hospitals are already super busy during flu season so this could get chaotic if they don't resolve their differences soon 🚨

i think both sides need to sit down and talk it out, but it seems like one side is being really stubborn πŸ€” mount sinai and new york presbyterian seem like they're trying to pin all the blame on the nurses when really it's just a contract dispute πŸ’Έ nysna has some legit concerns about staffing protections and wages though so it's not all bad news 😊

monday's going to be a crazy day in NYC 🚨πŸ₯ the nurses are fed up with those hospital execs thinking they can just ignore them and prioritize profits over patient care πŸ€‘πŸ’Έ it's not right that they're being forced into a strike, but at least the city is prepping for the worst-case scenario 🀞

i feel so bad for all the patients who'll be affected by this, especially during flu season when healthcare needs are already stretched thin πŸ˜·πŸ‘€ hopefully both sides can come together and negotiate a deal that works for everyone πŸ€— but it's hard to see how that's gonna happen given their track record πŸ™„

anyway, i'm just glad we're having open conversations about this stuff – it's time hospitals started putting people over profits πŸ’–

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ hospitals got greedy, nurses gotta take a stand πŸ₯πŸ’Ό I mean, who wouldn't want to prioritize profits over actual patient care? It's like they're trying to break the Golden Rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you... just not actually follow through on that πŸ˜’

I guess hospitals think they can just swoop in and hire random nurses from other places when their own staff wants better pay and working conditions. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Newsflash: it's gonna take more than some external hires to make up for staffing shortages caused by those "greedy" hospital execs πŸ‘€

The fact that they're trying to spin this as a labor disruption rather than a legitimate strike just shows how out of touch they are with their own employees πŸ™„. I'm all for fair negotiations, but when you're not even willing to meet basic economic proposals, that's not negotiation – that's just hostage-taking 🚫

Oh well, at least Governor Hochul is on it πŸ‘. We'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out πŸ’ͺ

I'm not surprised they're striking – hospitals are all about lining their pockets anyway πŸ€‘. It's just a matter of time before one of these CEOs tries to cut corners and leaves patients high and dry. And don't even get me started on the new hires – 1,400 outside nurses? Sounds like they're trying to import cheaper labor to keep costs down πŸ˜’.

The fact that they're claiming to prioritize patient care is just laughable – we all know how hospitals really work. The city's always talking about quality healthcare, but at the end of the day, it's all about the benjamins πŸ’Έ. And good luck with that disaster emergency declaration – I'm sure out-of-state nurses will be thrilled to get stuck in traffic and deal with NYC's infamous gridlock πŸš—πŸ’¨.

The only way this strike is going to make a difference is if everyone stays home sick – then maybe hospitals will take notice of the real issue: underpaid, overworked staff πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ. But until then, it'll just be business as usual... or so they hope 😏.

man i feel bad for those nurses, 15k+ workers just because some hospital CEOs wanna make bank πŸ€‘ it's not right. i get that healthcare is expensive but priorities should be on patient care, not profit margins. nysna president nancy hagans is right, hospitals are being super greedy and pushing them to take a stand. and now they're hiring outside nurses like that's gonna solve the problem? still more pressure on the actual nurses doing the job 🀯 and mayor mamdani is trying to play both sides but i think it's cool he's advocating for patients' access to quality healthcare ❀️
