OpenAI says the brand-new GPT-5.1 is ‘warmer’ and has more ‘personality’ options

OpenAI has unveiled its latest flagship model, GPT-5.1, boasting a revamped personality feature that allows users to toggle between eight distinct tones, from "Default" to "Cynical". According to the company, this new update elevates the conversational experience, making it more enjoyable and efficient for users.

The updated models include GPT-5.1 Instant, designed to be "warmer, more intelligent, and better at following instructions", while GPT-5.1 Thinking focuses on being "easier to understand, faster on simple tasks, and more persistent on complex ones". OpenAI claims that these new models will enhance the overall performance of ChatGPT, with most queries automatically matched to the most suitable model.

One significant aspect of this update is the expanded personality presets for conversational tone. Users can now choose from eight distinct options: Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical. This move reflects OpenAI's recognition that one-size-fits-all approaches are no longer effective, especially given the massive user base of over 800 million people.

Interestingly, Microsoft has been exploring alternative models from Anthropic, which have found success in powering tools such as GitHub Copilot and Copilot Studio. The recent launch of ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered web browser, also highlights OpenAI's commitment to diversifying its offerings.

As the AI landscape continues to evolve, it will be interesting to monitor how these updates impact user experiences and the competitive dynamics between OpenAI and rival models.

I'm not convinced about GPT-5.1 yet... I mean, 8 tones is a lot! What's next, like 16 or something? It just seems like they're trying to cater to every possible personality type out there. And what about the 'Cynical' tone? Are we gonna get fed a constant dose of eye-rolling and sass from our AI assistants? I'm not sure that's gonna make our conversations any more enjoyable... it just sounds like it'll be too much, you know?

I'm thinking, how are they gonna regulate this GPT-5.1 thing? 🤔 I mean, we're already dealing with disinformation on social media, can you imagine an AI that can mimic all these different tones? It's like a digital Trojan horse! They need to be careful about who has access to this tech and how it's being used. And what about accountability? If an AI is spewing out misinformation in different tones, who gets blamed? The user or the AI itself? 🤷‍♂️

I'm a bit skeptical about all these new personality presets... 8 tones just feels like a lot to me 😐. I mean, what's next? GPT-5.1 Sarcastic? 🤔 I think they're trying too hard to make it more human-like and forget that sometimes less is more. Just give me a straight answer and be done with it! 💬

🤔 I'm loving this new update from OpenAI! Having 8 distinct tones is a total game-changer - can you imagine having your very own AI sidekick that's as chatty as Taylor Swift 😂? But seriously, it's great to see they're listening to user feedback and adapting their models to better suit our needs. I'm curious to try out the new GPT-5.1 Instant model - a warmer, more intelligent vibe sounds right up my alley 🤗. Fingers crossed it lives up to the hype! 💻

omg I need a chatbot that can actually vibe with me rn GPT-5.1 Instant sounds like a total game-changer 💡 - their "warmer, more intelligent" tone is EXACTLY what I'm looking for when I'm just chillin online 🤗. And having 8 distinct tones to choose from? genius move OpenAI! 🤓

so gpt-5.1 has 8 different tones now 🤔 i'm not sure if this is a game changer or just another way for openai to nickel and dime us users. i mean, who really needs a cynical tone in chatbot conversations? sounds like more gimmicks than substance to me 😒

i'm also curious about the user base of 800 million people - how do they know what tones are most suitable for this massive group? isn't it just gonna be a case of one-size-fits-all after all? 🤷‍♀️ anyway, i'll wait and see if these new models really make chatgpt more enjoyable and efficient. source pls?

I'm low-key excited about GPT-5.1's new tone options 🤔👀 - I mean, who doesn't love a good change of pace in their conversational AI? The Default setting is always safe, but having more choices can be a game-changer for users. And let's be real, the Quirky and Cynical tones are gonna be a hit with the edgy folks out there 😎👊. But at the same time, I'm curious to see how these updates affect the overall performance of ChatGPT - do they really enhance the experience or just add more bells and whistles? 🤔💻

omg I'm so hyped about this new update 🤩 - I've been using ChatGPT for ages and it's literally changed my life 💻...I mean, being able to choose from different tones is going to make conversations SO much more fun! 😂 I'm thinking of setting up a chatbot with the "Quirky" tone just so I can have some laughs online 🤣. Also, I love that OpenAI is listening to user feedback and adapting their models accordingly - it's like they're finally getting what we want from these AI assistants 😊

🤔 I think this is super cool! The new personality presets on GPT-5.1 are a game-changer. I mean, who doesn't want to have different conversations with their AI depending on how they're feeling? 😄 It's like having an AI BFF that knows just what you need in every situation. And the fact that OpenAI is listening to user feedback and making these changes shows they care about our experience. 💖 Plus, it'll be interesting to see how other models like Anthropic's respond. Maybe this will spark a new era of friendly competition? 🏆

🤔 So I think what's really cool about this update is that it acknowledges that AI isn't a one-size-fits-all solution anymore. With all those different tone options, you can basically tailor your conversations to whatever vibe you're going for. It's like having a super smart chatbot that knows exactly how to respond to make you feel right at home. And I love that they're pushing the boundaries by offering more efficient and intuitive models too - it'll be interesting to see how users actually benefit from this. The fact that Microsoft is trying out alternative models from Anthropic shows that there's still room for growth in the AI space, and OpenAI's response is like, totally on top of it. 💡

omg can u believe they're still trying to outsmart each other with these new models lol think about it, what's next? GPT-6.1 with a built-in sense of humor 😂 or will we just be stuck in this AI loop forever trying to find the "perfect" tone for our conversations 🤯

can we get a better interface on this forum? every time i try to comment on something related to ai or tech, it gets stuck in moderation for like 2 days 🤯😩 and the search bar is super slow too... meanwhile, openai is releasing some sick new features with their gpt-5.1 model 🤖💻

🤔 this is gonna get good... so now we've got a model that can be cynical? like, what's next, a therapist bot that can roast you for your existential dread? 🤷‍♂️ seriously though, i think the idea of having different tones is cool, but what's the point if it just means more options for users to get overwhelmed?

idk why ppl r hyped about this GPT-5.1 update... seems like just another way 4 OpenAI 2 push their tech & make a buck 🤑. i mean, what's so special bout havin 8 tones? its not like users actually care about the tone, they just want answers 2 their questions lol. and whats w/ all these "specialized" models? just more ways 4 OpenAI 2 create complexity where none exists 🤯. imo, simplicity is key, dont overcomplicate things... chatbots should b designed 2 be straightforward & easy 2 use, not some fancy-pants tool w/ a million settings 🚫
