‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ Hasn’t Aged Well

The 2013 Disney fantasy adventure 'Oz the Great and Powerful' has failed to leave a lasting impression, with its lackluster casting and weak narrative overshadowing what could have been an enchanting origin story.

In a departure from L. Frank Baum's original tale, Sam Raimi's film instead focuses on the titular character, Oscar Diggs (played by James Franco), a con artist who stumbles upon a magical world after his hot air balloon gets swept away by a tornado. The movie attempts to reimagine Oz as a self-made wizard who must come to terms with his own powerlessness in order to take down the witch sisters.

However, Franco's casting proves problematic given the emerging allegations of misconduct against him. His character's objectification and womanizing also detract from the film's intended message about the importance of empathy and understanding.

The plot is convoluted, relying heavily on convenient plot devices and contrivances to drive the narrative forward. Raimi's signature style is evident in the film's visual effects, but they now seem dated compared to modern CGI standards.

One of the most glaring issues with 'Oz the Great and Powerful' is its failure to live up to the standard set by Baum's original tale. The film's portrayal of Glinda, a character who serves as both a benevolent guide and a symbol of female empowerment, feels shallow and underdeveloped.

Furthermore, the movie's attempts at social commentary fall flat due to its reliance on male-dominated power structures. Oz's charisma is touted as the key to saving the land from the witch sisters, rather than any genuine sense of justice or compassion.

Despite these criticisms, 'Oz the Great and Powerful' remains a visually stunning film that successfully captures the whimsical spirit of L. Frank Baum's world. Its themes of self-discovery and growth are well-intentioned but poorly executed.

Ultimately, while 'Oz the Great and Powerful' may be an enjoyable watch in moderation, it feels like a missed opportunity to truly explore the complexities of Oz's world and its characters. For fans looking for a deeper dive into the Wizard of Oz universe, Raimi's 1985 sequel 'Return to Oz' remains a more unsettling but fascinating alternative.

the movie just didn't live up to my expectations 🤔... i mean, james franco wasnt my cup of tea in this one... felt like they were trying to make him into a likable guy but it came across as kinda shallow 😐. and don't even get me started on the plot devices 🙄... it just felt like they were rushing through the story without giving us enough time to really connect with the characters 💔. i did love the visuals tho 👍, but that's about where it ended for me... if you're a die-hard oz fan, i can see why you'd want to watch this, but for someone who loves a good story 📚, there are definitely better options out there 😊

I mean, what's up with this film? 🤔 The special effects were fire back in the day, but now they just look like something my dad used to play on his old gaming console 🎮. And Franco's character just feels like he's trying way too hard to be a bad boy 😒. I mean, I get it, he was accused of some stuff and the filmmakers were trying to distance him from the role, but come on, it still comes across as kinda problematic 🤷‍♂️.

And Glinda? Forget about it 💁‍♀️. She's just a prop to help Franco's character feel like a hero, you know? I mean, where's the depth? Where's the substance? It feels like they took all the fun and whimsy of Oz and replaced it with some generic, surface-level stuff 🤷‍♂️.

And don't even get me started on how they handled the themes of female empowerment and justice 🙄. It's all just a bunch of nonsense about Oz's charisma being the answer to everything 💁‍♀️. Like, no, it's not that simple. Give me a break. 😒

OMG I'm so over the whole Franco thing 🙄, like you can't just cast someone with allegations against them and expect us to be all okay with it? The womanizing in this film is seriously cringeworthy 😷. And don't even get me started on the plot...it's like they took all these cool ideas from Baum's original story and just phoned them in 📚. The CGI is still pretty, but who cares when the story is so weak? 🤦‍♀️ At least 'Return to Oz' tried to be a little more edgy and weird 😳...I'd totally watch that again over this mess 🍿💔

I mean, have you seen the special effects in this movie? They're like something out of a different decade 🤯. I know some people might say it's dated, but I think that's part of its charm? The film's just not as strong as the books, you feel me? Sam Raimi tried to put his own spin on things, but sometimes you gotta leave well enough alone. Franco's character is pretty whiny too 🙄. And Glinda? She's like a Disney princess without all the depth. But still, Oz has that classic magic to it ✨.

idk why they're still bringin up this movie after all these years 😐 it's like people just wanna diss Franco's involvement and the whole production has been kinda overshadowed by that 🤷‍♂️ but at the same time, i get what the filmmakers were tryna do – explore the character of Oz and his journey to self-discovery 💡 but honestly, it feels like they took some major creative liberties and forgot about the original story 📚 and yeah, the social commentary could've been more nuanced 🤔 anyway, it's still a pretty visually stunning film, and for fans of the Wizard of Oz universe, there are better options out there, imo 👍

man I just watched that movie again 🤔 and honestly I'm still not feeling it 😐 James Franco's acting in this flick is like... meh 😒 and the way they handled Glinda was straight up whack 💁‍♀️ I mean, I get what the filmmakers were trying to do but it all felt so rushed and convenient 🚨 like they just phoned it in. And don't even get me started on the plot holes 🤯 if you're gonna make a movie about Oz, at least try to stay true to the source material, ya know? 🙃 I mean, 'Return to Oz' is still my fave 🎥 that one's more like an actual story 😊

I'm still thinking about the casting choice 🤔👀 James Franco's inclusion in this movie is like buying a hot air balloon that just happens to blow away in a storm... it's not a bad thing per se, but you're left wondering if it was really worth it 😳. Anyway, have you seen the box office numbers for this movie? 📊 It only grossed $493M worldwide on a budget of $230M 🤑. Not too shabby, I guess...

Ugh 🤷‍♂️, I was really disappointed with this film... They just didn't get it right, you know? I mean, James Franco as the main guy? Not my cup of tea at all 🍵. And don't even get me started on how they handled the whole thing with the witch sisters and the girls in Oz... It's like they took all the positive messages from Baum's original book and just threw 'em out the window 😐. I know CGI is supposed to be all fancy now, but come on, it's not that hard to do better than this 🤯. And honestly, if you're gonna make a movie about someone trying to find their way as a wizard, at least have them figure some stuff out by the end of it... 🙄

🤔 I feel like they're kinda right about Oz the Great and Powerful not living up to the original story... it does have some major issues with casting and narrative. Franco's character comes off as pretty one-dimensional, especially given his recent controversies 🙅‍♂️. But at the same time, you can tell they're missing the point of what made Baum's tale so special in the first place - it's like they're trying to fit Oz into a modern framework instead of letting its unique charm shine through.

And yeah, the film's attempts at social commentary feel pretty shallow 🤷‍♀️. I mean, Oz is supposed to be this self-made wizard who's all about empathy and understanding... but when you look closer, it's just him using his charisma to save the day 😐. But hey, it's still a visually stunning film that captures the whimsy of Baum's world... so if you're a fan of fantasy movies, I guess it's worth checking out 🎥.

I mean I get why they made that movie, trying to make it darker and edgier like Sam Raimi's style, but honestly it just feels forced 🤷‍♂️. Franco's not the best fit for Oscar Diggs if you ask me, and all them allegations kinda suck the magic out of the whole thing 💔. I also think they messed up Glinda's character too much, she was supposed to be a strong female presence but instead it feels like they just threw her in there as an afterthought 🙄. And don't even get me started on how they handled the social commentary, it just comes across as shallow and try-hard 💁‍♀️. I mean if you're gonna make a movie about Oz, might as well do it right and stay true to the original tale, ya know? 😐

I mean, I think the main problem with 'Oz the Great and Powerful' is that it was trying to fit too much into one movie 🤯. The story's got some great ideas about self-discovery and empathy, but they get lost in all the flashy special effects and Franco's character issues 🙅‍♂️. And don't even get me started on Glinda - she feels like a total afterthought, you know? 😒. I mean, I guess it's still a pretty cool visual feast, but if you're gonna make an adaptation of Oz, can't they do better than that? 🤔.

I'm still trying to figure out why they didn't cast someone else as Glinda 🤔👑. She's such an iconic character and Franco just doesn't do her justice 💁‍♀️👸. The whole thing feels like it could've been so much more with a stronger female lead 👯‍♀️💖. And don't even get me started on the plot, it's like they took every cool idea and just kinda... forgot where to put them 🤦‍♂️😂. The CGI is still pretty sweet though 💥👀!

I'm so over this whole "Oz the Great and Powerful" hype 🤦‍♂️. I mean, it was okay, I guess... for what it was. But come on, James Franco as the wizard? 🙄 It's like they wanted to make him look as bad as possible given all the allegations against him. And don't even get me started on the plot - it's like they took every cliche from a fantasy movie and mashed them all together into one big mess 🤯.

And Glinda? Girl, she was so underdeveloped... I mean, I get what they were trying to do with her character, but it felt like they just phoned it in. And the themes of empathy and understanding? Yeah, no thanks... it just felt like Oz's charisma was the only thing that mattered 🙅‍♂️.

You know what really got me though? The fact that fans are still going on about how great this movie is 😒. Like, have you seen 'Return to Oz'? Now that's a movie that explores the complexities of Oz's world... and it's way more unsettling than Franco's bland performance 😳.

I don't get why Franco's casting is such a big deal 🤔. I mean, he's played some iconic characters before (like Spider-Man). But in this case, his character feels kinda one-dimensional, you know? Like, what's the point of him being a con artist if we're not gonna explore that depth more? And don't even get me started on how Glinda is handled - I feel like they totally missed an opportunity to make her a strong, complex female character 💁‍♀️. The whole film just feels like it's relying too much on nostalgia for the original book and not enough on actual storytelling 🎬. But hey, I guess it's still pretty to look at 👀.

omg I totally agree! I mean, what was up with Franco's casting? like, I get that he's talented and all, but this character just didn't feel right for him 🙄. And the way they handled Glinda was so underwhelming. She's like, supposed to be this powerful female figure, but it felt like they just threw in a generic 'nice girl' vibe instead of actually developing her into something more interesting 💁‍♀️.

And don't even get me started on how they handled the whole social commentary thing 🙄. I mean, I love that Oz is all about self-discovery and growth, but when you're trying to tackle real issues like power structures and empathy, it's gotta be done with more nuance than this 👎.

But despite all its flaws, I have to give props for the visuals - it was super pretty! 🌈 And it's still fun to watch in moderation, even if it doesn't hold up as a masterpiece 💫.
