Philadelphia Orchestra sets 2026-27 season with Beethoven’s Ninth, Mahler, world premieres and ‘Star Wars’

The Philadelphia Orchestra has unveiled its 2026-27 season at Marian Anderson Hall, promising an eclectic mix of classical staples, new commissions, and bold collaborations. Under the guidance of Music and Artistic Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin for his 15th consecutive year, the orchestra's lineup is replete with familiar works, contemporary music, and world premieres.

The season kicks off on September 24th with an Opening Night Celebration that sets the tone for a rich year of performances. The program features Beethoven's iconic Ninth Symphony, paired with the US premiere of "Orbis," a new composition by Joe Hisaishi. Vocal soloists Leah Hawkins, J’Nai Bridges, Issachah Savage, and Ryan Speedo Green will join forces with the Philadelphia Symphonic Choir to bring this unique work to life.

As the season progresses, the orchestra presents performances of Orff's "Carmina burana," four symphonies by Gustav Mahler, and a concert presentation of Wagner's opera "Lohengrin." Several world premieres are also on the horizon, including new orchestral works by Reena Esmail and Valerie Coleman's reorchestrated version of Florence Price's "Rainbow Waltz."

Other highlights include the orchestra's first complete performances of Bach's "Christmas Oratorio," a new orchestral arrangement drawn from Leonard Bernstein's "MASS," and the premiere of "The Party," a multidisciplinary work blending live orchestra with stop-motion animation. The season also features guest artists such as Emanuel Ax, Yuja Wang, Daniil Trifonov, Yunchan Lim, and Simon Rattle.

Special event programming includes a 50th anniversary concert screening of "Star Wars: A New Hope," where the orchestra performs John Williams' score live, alongside a live-to-picture presentation of "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban." The season also boasts holiday programs, family-friendly performances, and select one-night spotlight events.

The Philadelphia Orchestra's 2026-27 season promises an engaging year of music and performance, with something for every kind of music lover. With its diverse lineup, world-class guest artists, and innovative collaborations, this season is sure to be a memorable one.

OMG 🤯, I'm so excited for the Philly Orchestra's 2026-27 season! I mean, who wouldn't love Beethoven's Ninth Symphony paired with Joe Hisaishi's new composition "Orbis"? 😊 It sounds like they're really pushing the boundaries of classical music. And, omg, world premieres? Like Reena Esmail and Valerie Coleman's orchestral works? 🤩 Can't wait to see what these new pieces sound like! And, cool that they're doing a 50th anniversary concert screening of "Star Wars: A New Hope" with the live orchestra performing John Williams' score... like, who doesn't love a good space battle? 🚀

I'm telling you, something fishy is going on here... They're unveiling the 2026-27 season way too early, if you ask me 🤔. Like they want us to forget about the upcoming season before it even starts? And what's with all these collaborations and world premieres? It's like they're trying to distract us from something... or someone 🤑. I mean, Yannick Nézet-Séguin has been leading this orchestra for 15 years, what's his real motive? Is he getting too powerful? 💼 And that Joe Hisaishi guy, is he just a random composer or is there more to it? There's definitely something shady going on here... 🤑🎵

I think the orchestra is playing it a bit safe with their 2026-27 season lineup. I mean, don't get me wrong, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Wagner's Lohengrin are classics and all, but where's the risk-taking? Where's the innovation? I'm all for showcasing new commissions and collaborations, but sometimes you gotta push boundaries and try something completely different. Like, have they considered a world premiere of a completely new genre of music or an orchestra that blends in with electronic elements? That would be interesting. Instead, we get a bunch of familiar works and some lukewarm attempts at fusion. It's just not as exciting to me 😐.

omg just saw the philly orchestra's 2026-27 season and i'm low-key hyped 🤩 they're bringing back some classic symphonies but also premiering new music by joe hisaishi & reena esmail - sounds lit 💥 and can we talk about the "star wars" screening event? live orchestra playing john williams' score while watching the movie? genius 👏 gotta get tix ASAP 🎟️

omg I'm soooo stoked for the philly orchestra's new season 🤩🎶! i've been listening to their recordings since like ever and can't wait to see them live with yannick nézet-séguin at the helm 🙌🏻. that joe hisaishi piece sounds insane btw "Orbis" sounds soooo cool! 🎵 also, leah hawkins and j'nal bridges as soloists? perfection 💯 can't wait to hear them on stage, especially with bach's christmas oratorio - been waiting for ages for the philly orchestra to do it 😆

man I'm thinking about how we're all just trying to find our place in the universe through music you know? like, this orchestra is doing their thing, but what does it mean to the rest of us outside those concert halls? is it just entertainment or can it bring us closer to something deeper? the way they're pushing boundaries with new commissions and collaborations makes me wonder if we're all just trying to find our own way to express ourselves in a world that's always changing 🤔

🤯 I'm so done with the classical music scene being all about "tradition" and "timeless masterpieces". Don't get me wrong, Beethoven's Ninth is iconic and all that jazz, but can we please give some love to the newer composers? Reena Esmail's new orchestral work is going to be EVERYTHING! And what's up with only one world premiere in an entire season?! I'm hyped for "Orbis" though, Joe Hisaishi is a genius and this US premiere is gonna be lit 🔥🎵

🎵 So I'm thinking the Philly Orchestra is going all out in 2026-27... like what's not to love about Beethoven's Ninth paired with that new Joe Hisaishi piece? 🤔 It's gonna be interesting to see how they pull off this unique blend of classical and contemporary. And I love that they're throwing in some world premieres - Reena Esmail and Valerie Coleman are both super talented composers, so I'm hyped to hear what they come up with.

But you know what really gets me is the whole "Orbit" thing... have they ever announced any info about the US premiere of this piece? 🤔 It's not every day you see a new composition from Joe Hisaishi on the bill, so I'm curious - what can we expect? Is it gonna be an epic orchestral work or something more experimental? The Philly Orchestra always does a great job at curating unique performances, and if they're bringing this to their opening night... well, that's just gonna be fantastic! 🎉

I'm so stoked about the Philly Orchestra's new season 🎵! They're doing some pretty cool collaborations and premieres, like that Joe Hisaishi piece with Beethoven's 9th 🤩. I love how they're mixing it up with different types of music, too - from classical to pop culture stuff like Star Wars 🚀. And who doesn't want to see a live orchestra performing Harry Potter? It sounds like they've got something for everyone this season, which is awesome!

I'm kinda stoked about the Philly orchestra's new season 🎵👏... I mean, who doesn't love Beethoven's 9th? But, gotta say, some of these world premieres sound super interesting (Reena Esmail and Valerie Coleman, anyone?). And, y'know what? The whole "The Party" thing sounds like a real wild ride 🎉👻. Not sure if I'm on board with the John Williams & Star Wars mashup, though... feels like too much nostalgia for me 😒. Still can't wait to see Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the gang bring it all together, though!

I'm so stoked they're doing the Beethoven's Ninth Symphony opening night 🎵👏! That's like, iconic symphonic stuff right there! And pairing it with Joe Hisaishi's "Orbis" is gonna be mind-blowing 🤯! I love that they're also premiering some new orchestral works by Reena Esmail and Valerie Coleman - gotta stay updated on those emerging composers 😊. And a concert presentation of Bach's Christmas Oratorio? That's like a holiday party in itself 🎄! Can't wait to see what other cool collaborations they have up their sleeve...

OMG 🤩 just heard about the Philadelphia Orchestra's 2026-27 season and I am SO stoked! 🎵 The eclectic mix of classical staples and new commissions has me super excited! 💥 Yannick Nézet-Séguin is back for his 15th year, and I know he's gonna bring some magic to the stage. 👏 The world premieres are a major draw for me - Reena Esmail and Valerie Coleman's works sound like total game-changers 🎶 can't wait to see what they have in store! 😃 And let's not forget the collaborations... Simon Rattle as a guest artist? ⭐️ that's some serious talent right there! 💯

OMG, I'm so excited for the new Philly Phil season 🤩! I've been listening to Joe Hisaishi's stuff nonstop on my anime marathons 🎥💫. I love how they're doing a world premiere of his "Orbis" - what do you think it'll be like? 😊 And can we talk about the movie nights?! Star Wars: A New Hope live orchestra screening is going to be SO much fun 🚀🎸. I've always wanted to see them play John Williams' scores, but I don't know if they have any shows in my area...
