Philadelphia's ambitious plan to scare off ICE

Philadelphia is preparing for its own showdown with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as the city joins Minneapolis in pushing back against federal immigration enforcement. This comes after weeks of chaos in Minneapolis, where ICE agents descended on the community under the guise of "immigration enforcement," leading to the deaths of two peaceful protesters.

In response, the White House has attempted to distance itself from the controversy, with Gregory Bovino being pushed out of his role as a top official. However, this move is not seen as a genuine attempt to back down, but rather as a temporary regrouping while the administration schemes its next move.

Philadelphia residents are on high alert, knowing that they could be the next target for ICE's aggressive tactics. City council members, such as Rue Landau and Kendra Brooks, have proposed an ambitious plan dubbed "ICE Out," which aims to shield the city from federal immigration enforcement and empower local law enforcement to arrest ICE agents who enter the city with ill intent.

The "ICE Out" legislation would require federal officers to wear badges, prohibit city services from cooperating with ICE, ban ICE agents from public property without a warrant, and prevent businesses from refusing service based on immigration status. District Attorney Larry Krasner has denounced Trump's tactics as those of "wannabe Nazis," promising to prosecute ICE officers who break state and local laws.

Activists, including Elias Siegelman, are calling for more concrete action from city leaders to push back against ICE's invasion. However, some officials, such as Mayor Cherelle Parker, seem hesitant to confront the issue head-on, preferring a more conciliatory approach that may only embolden Trump's administration.

In contrast, Minneapolis has shown that peaceful resistance can be an effective way to counter federal overreach. The city's response to ICE's invasion has been marked by fierce but non-violent protests, with Democratic leaders like Gov. Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey siding with protesters against the Trump administration.

The "ICE Out" bill in Philadelphia has a real chance of being effective in deterring federal agents from targeting the city. By codifying restrictions on ICE's tactics and empowering local law enforcement, the legislation would make it harder for the administration to escalate conflicts with the community and reduce feelings of frustration among activists.

Ultimately, the key to keeping Trump's administration at bay is to raise the costs of their aggression. By making them feel like it's more trouble than it's worth, the White House may back down from its plans to invade cities like Philadelphia. As Europe has recently learned by stopping Trump from colonizing Greenland, this strategy often works: making him feel like his fantasies are just too much trouble to pursue.

๐Ÿค” the problem with our system is that it's all about who can make noise & get attention 4 a few days but when it comes down to taking real action, people in power seem 2 shy ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ

i mean dont get me wrong i love how minneapolis stood up 2 ice & showed them they wont be pushed around ๐Ÿ‘Š but its not just about the protests its about having laws in place that actually keep u safe ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

philadelphia needs 2 step up their game if they wanna take on ice & make it a real challenge 4 trump's administration ๐Ÿšจ

omg yaaas philly is doin it rn ๐Ÿ˜‚ theyre takin back control and standin up 2 trumps tyrannical admin ๐Ÿ’ช gotta love city council members rue landau and kendra brooks for proposin this "ice out" bill ๐Ÿค its like, we dont wanna be the next minneapolis ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ but at the same time trump's tactics r getting more and more sus ๐Ÿค‘ like whats up w/ICE wearin badges and whatnot? ๐Ÿ™„ and larry krasner is lowkey savage ๐Ÿ‘Š for callin out trumps wannabe nazi tactics ๐Ÿคฃ anyway i think philly got this ๐Ÿ’ฏ theyre makin a real effort to push back against ICE's invasion ๐ŸŒŸ fingers crossed it works ๐Ÿคž

I'm so on board with Minneapolis doing what they're doing and now Philly is joining in, I love it ๐Ÿคฉ! The more cities push back against ICE's overreach, the better off we'll be. City council members should just keep pushing for that "ICE Out" bill and not hold back because of some concerns from the mayor or others. We need to make it clear that we won't tolerate federal agents coming in here and bullying our citizens.

And yeah, let's give credit to District Attorney Krasner for calling out Trump's tactics as those of "wannabe Nazis" - that's the kind of bold language we need to see more of! The whole nation needs to wake up and realize how ridiculous these ICE tactics are. If Philadelphia passes that bill, it'll be a huge win and should definitely make the White House think twice about targeting them next.

As for the activists calling for more concrete action from city leaders, I say they're on the right track - sometimes you just need to get people to take notice and then the momentum builds itself. And if Minneapolis is showing us that peaceful resistance can work, we should definitely be doing more of that too... but with a bit more swagger ๐Ÿ˜!

omg i'm so down for philly to take a stand against ice!!! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ their "ice out" bill is literally the best thing i've heard in ages, it's about time we protect our community from these federal agents who just wanna cause chaos ๐Ÿคฏ. i know minneapolis has been through hell with trump's tactics but we can't let him get away with this in philly too ๐Ÿšซ. mayor cherelle parker needs to step up her game and show us she's not afraid of trump ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ. meanwhile, let's keep supporting our local activists who are fighting for justice ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐Ÿค” i think philly is taking a good approach with the "ICE Out" bill ๐Ÿ“ˆ it's not about being confrontational or anti-feds, but more about taking back control and setting boundaries for their own city ๐Ÿšซ if trump's admin tries to test those limits, they'll get met with resistance ๐Ÿ”’ meanwhile, europe's experience is super relevant here ๐ŸŒŽ we've seen how stopping trump from invading greenland worked ๐Ÿ™ the real question now is what other tactics will philly use to push back against ice and what will be the consequences for trumps admin ๐Ÿ‘Š

I'm low-key worried about Philly getting sucked into all this drama ๐Ÿคฏ. They're trying to shield the city, but what if it backfires? We don't want no more chaos in the streets, you feel? I think Elias Siegelman's right on point when he says they need to take concrete action - like, actual legislation that makes it hard for ICE to operate here. Not just a bunch of empty words from Mayor Parker ๐Ÿ™„. Minneapolis showed us what can be done with peaceful protests, and Philly should take notes ๐Ÿ“. If we make this "ICE Out" bill happen, maybe Trump will think twice before coming after them next ๐Ÿ˜.
