Plex’s crackdown on free remote streaming access starts this week

Plex Takes the Plug on Free Remote Streaming Access, Leaving Users to Shell Out for Subscriptions.

The popular media streaming service Plex is clamping down on its free remote access feature, requiring users to pay for a subscription in order to access their personal media servers. The new policy, which was first announced last March, will soon be rolled out across all of Plex's TV apps and third-party clients.

As of April 29, Plex Pass subscribers can continue to access their media libraries remotely without issue. However, users who are not paying for a subscription will face restrictions on the types of content they can access and when.

Instead, Plex is now requiring users to purchase either a Plex Pass or a Remote Watch Pass in order to gain remote access to other people's media servers. The Plex Pass starts at $7 per month, while the Remote Watch Pass costs just $2 per month.

While Plex claims that these new rules are necessary to help cover "rising costs" and implement new features, some users are taking issue with the move. Long-time Plex users have been accustomed to accessing their media libraries remotely for free, and are now facing a significant increase in subscription fees.

In an effort to shore up its financials, Plex has also reported that it is nearing profitability, thanks to increased revenue from its streaming service and recent funding rounds. However, this new policy could alienate some of its most loyal customers who have been relying on the service for years without having to pay a dime.

For those in the market for an alternative media server solution, options like Jellyfin are becoming increasingly appealing. As Plex continues to shift its focus towards its streaming business, it remains to be seen whether users will stick with the company or look elsewhere for their media hosting needs.

omg 🤯 just found out that plex is charging us for remote access to our own media servers? like what even is the point of having a plex pass if i'm already paying for it? $9/month sounds like way too much money for me...anybody else considering switching to jellyfin or something?

🤔 omg i dont think this is cool... i mean i get that they need to make money but $7 a month for remote access is kinda steep 🤑 especially if youre already paying for plex pass and it was free before. its like they took away a perk we loved just to increase revenue 💸

🤔 I'm kinda bummed out about this move from Plex. They've been giving us free remote access to our personal media servers for years and now they're just charging us $7/month for it? 😒 It's like, I get that they need to make money but come on, you don't have to take away something that was already there for free. And what about all the users who are gonna be stuck with a bunch of old media files they can't access anymore just because they can't afford the subscription? 📀 It's like they're trying to nickel and dime us to death. Meanwhile, Jellyfin is over here offering similar features for free... I'm not sure how long Plex will be able to keep its most loyal customers on board 🤷‍♂️

Ugh I'm literally fuming about this 🤯! Like, can't they just let us use our own servers without charging us extra?! It's not like we're asking for much, just a little freedom to access our own stuff from anywhere. But noooo, Plex has to go and nickel-and-dime us to death, starting from like $7 a month?! That's outrageous! I've been using them for years and I'm so fed up with this new policy. It's not just about the money, it's about the principle. They're basically saying that if you can't afford their service, then you shouldn't be able to use it. And what about all the people who are on a tight budget or don't want to shell out extra cash for something they already pay for? It's just not right 😡. I'm seriously considering switching to Jellyfin or something else now. At least those services don't try to bleed us dry like Plex is doing 🤑💸.

I feel so bad for all the plex users out there who are going to have to shell out even more cash 🤑😒. I get that companies gotta make money and all but can't they just find a way to keep it free for those of us who've been loyal customers for years? 🤔 It's like, Plex used to be the go-to app for media streaming back in the day, but now it's like they're pricing out their own fans 💸. I'm not surprised that some users are considering alternatives like Jellyfin - at least those guys are transparent about not charging subscription fees 🙌. Hope everyone finds a good solution to this problem! 👍

I'm kinda bummed about this new policy from Plex 🤕. I mean, who doesn't love being able to access their media libraries on the go without having to pay extra? It feels like they're nickel-and-diming us now... I've been using Plex for years and was always happy with the free remote access feature. Now it's just another thing that makes me want to look elsewhere 🤔. Jellyfin is looking pretty good right about now, and I'm considering making the switch. Has anyone else made the leap from Plex to Jellyfin? What's been your experience with both services?

OMG u guys I just can't even right now 🤯 Plex is being SO extra by making us pay for remote access to our own media servers!!! I mean I get it they need to make some cash but $7 a month is just steep! 🤑 Like what's the point of even having a free option if we're gonna be charged for it anyway? 💸 And can't they see that long time users like me are super loyal and will just stop using the service? 😔 Jellyfin seems like a solid alternative tho 👍

omg guys i cant believe plex is doing this theyre basically telling us we have to pay for our own home entertainment now lol but seriously who can afford another $7 on top of whatever streaming service they already use? its like plex thinks we all have infinite money idk about you ppl but thats just crazy to me anyway im thinking of switching to jellyfin or something they seem way more reasonable rn

🤔 I'm soooo not surprised about this 🤑... I mean, who doesn't love a good surprise when they're just trying to stream their favorite shows on the go? 😒 Plex has basically been playing it cool and free for far too long, and now they're like "Sorry, folks! You gotta shell out some cash if you wanna access your own media servers!" 🤑

And don't even get me started on the prices 🤯... $7 a month for Plex Pass? That's more than what I pay for my phone bill in a month 😂. And Remote Watch Pass is like, what, a buck or something? 🤷‍♀️ It's just not fair to all the long-time users who have been using Plex for free and now they're getting hit with these ridiculous fees.

I'm defo gonna keep an eye on this one 👀... it'll be interesting to see if anyone sticks around or jumps ship like I mentioned in my last post 💸

omg 😱 just found out plex is taking away free remote access 🚫💸 and now i'm stuck shelling out $7 a month 🤑 or 2 bucks for a month if i want to watch my friends' fave shows 📺👀 but i don't wanna pay extra 💔 anyone else having this problem? 🤯 also heard jellyfin is becoming super popular 🌱👍 maybe it's time to make the switch 💻😊
