President Trump signs government funding bill, ending shutdown after a record 43-day disruption

President Trump Ends Record 43-Day Government Shutdown with Signature Bill

In a much-needed end to a prolonged period of uncertainty, President Donald Trump signed a government funding bill on Wednesday night, bringing an abrupt halt to the nation's first-ever record-breaking 43-day shutdown. The measure, which had been passed by the House and Senate earlier in the day, brings some relief to federal workers who missed paychecks during the disruption, as well as travelers stranded at airports and those dependent on food assistance programs.

The bill, a compromise reached among eight senators from both parties, funds three annual spending bills and extends government funding through January 30. While it does not extend an enhanced tax credit expiring at the end of the year that lowers the cost of health coverage obtained through Affordable Care Act marketplaces, Republicans rejected Democrats' demands to include this priority in the measure.

"This fight is not over," said Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, as lawmakers vowed to continue pushing for the subsidy extension. "We're just getting started." For now, though, the bill represents a significant victory for Republicans, who had taken unprecedented unilateral actions – including canceling projects and trying to fire federal workers – in an attempt to pressure Democrats into relenting on their demands.

The signing ceremony came as lawmakers debated the measure on the House floor, with some expressing frustration over the shutdown's impact. "We told you 43 days ago from bitter experience that government shutdowns don't work," said Rep. Tom Cole, Republican chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. Republicans argued that Democrats used the shutdown to prevail in a policy dispute, but Democrats countered that the measure left families without guarantee of extended tax credits to help everyday people pay for health care.

The bill includes provisions that reversed the firing of federal workers by the Trump administration and protected them against further layoffs through January. It also funds security measures for lawmakers and Supreme Court justices. However, Democrats criticized language in the bill allowing senators to sue when their electronic records are searched without notification.

Despite the agreement, the fate of the expiring enhanced tax credit remains a contentious issue. Without it, millions of Americans will face significantly higher health insurance premiums, with more than 2 million people at risk of losing coverage next year. As lawmakers head back into session in December, it's unclear whether they'll find common ground on the issue or if the fight over healthcare reform will continue unabated.

With the shutdown finally brought to an end, the nation can breathe a sigh of relief. Yet for millions of Americans, the consequences of this prolonged standoff will be felt for months to come – and the question remains: what's next?

🤔 so like, I'm still trying to wrap my head around this record-breaking 43-day gov shutdown 🚫💸. Can we really say it was worth it in the end? I mean, sure, there are some wins for Reps on this bill 📈, but those tax credit concessions are basically just gonna raise prices for people's healthcare premiums 💊. Not cool, right? And what about that clause allowing senators to sue over their records being searched without notice? 😒 Sounds like a total privacy invasion.

Also, I'm still confused as to why Rep Cole was all like "we told you 43 days ago" 🤷‍♂️. Like, who doesn't know how gov shutdowns work by now? And what's the deal with Democrats saying this fight isn't over? Are they just gonna keep pushing for those tax credits until it happens? I'm not sure if that's a winning strategy 🤔.

Oh, and can we get some transparency here? Where did these numbers come from claiming 2 million people will lose coverage next year? 📊 Sources, pls!

man that was a wild ride 🤯... 43 days is like, forever 😩... i feel bad for all those ppl who missed paychecks and had to deal with food assistance probs 🍔👀... and can u believe they were gonna let ppl go without their health insurance? 🚫😱 that's not cool at all... i hope democrats push back hard on this one 💪... but yeah, congrats to repubs for getting some stuff done 🎉... now what's next? is the healthcare fight really over? 🤔

I'm so relieved that the government shutdown is over 🙌. 43 days is a huge amount of time, especially when it comes to people who lost paychecks or had their benefits disrupted. It's not ideal that the bill didn't include the extended tax credit, but I think it's good that lawmakers were able to find some common ground.

I do wish they could've found a way to make everyone happy, though. For people who are struggling with health insurance costs, this is just another headache 🤯. And what about all the workers who were affected by the shutdown? They're going to feel the strain of lost paychecks for months.

It's interesting that some lawmakers are already saying it's not over and that they'll keep pushing for the subsidy extension. I get that, but at this point, it feels like we've been through a lot already 😩. Can't we just try to find a solution that works for everyone?

🤔 I'm glad the government shutdown is over, but this bill has some major loopholes 🚫. For one, no extended tax credits? That's gonna hit a lot of people hard 💸. And what's with the provision that lets senators sue for their electronic records being searched without notification? 🤯 It's like, hello, we're talking about government employees here, not celebrities 👀.

I'm all for finding common ground and working together, but this feels like just a quick fix to avoid accountability 🤷‍♂️. We should be addressing the root issues here, not just patching things over with some last-minute compromise 🎭. Still, I guess it's better than nothing... 😐

I'm glad the government shutdown is over 🙌🏽, it was super stressful for everyone involved. I feel bad that all those federal workers didn't get paid on time 😩. It's crazy that Republicans went unilateral with their actions, like canceling projects and trying to fire people - it doesn't seem very reasonable to me 🤔. The bill might be a good start, but the fight over the tax credit is still going strong 🔥. Millions of Americans are gonna face huge health insurance premium hikes next year, that's not cool 😒. Let's hope lawmakers can work together soon and find a solution 💪.

man I'm so relieved that the government shutdown is over 🙌. it was getting pretty crazy with all those people missing paychecks and stuff. i feel bad for the gov workers who had to miss out on paychecks, especially during holidays like christmas. but at least now they can get back to work and get paid 💸.

i'm also thinking about all the ppl who are gonna be affected by the expiring tax credit 🤔. my grandma is one of them, she relies on that tax credit to afford her health insurance. it's gonna be a struggle for her if it doesn't get extended. i hope lawmakers can find common ground and extend it ASAP 🤞.

anyway, now that the shutdown is over, let's focus on getting back to work 😅. there's still so much to do in this country, from healthcare reform to climate change 🌎. we need to keep pushing for progress and not get bogged down by politics 💪.

I'm glad it's over 🙌 but let's be real, folks... 43 days is CRAZY long for a government shutdown 🤯. I mean, can't they just agree on something already? 🤷‍♂️ It feels like we're stuck in some sort of perpetual budget cycle 💸. And those tax credits are gonna affect so many people's lives - it's not just about healthcare, it's about everyday folks trying to make ends meet 👥.

I also don't love the part where lawmakers can sue each other for searching their electronic records 🤔... that sounds like a whole 'nother headache 😬. And what's with the lack of progress on the enhanced tax credit? It feels like they're just kicking the can down the road 🔴. I'm all for compromise and finding common ground, but sometimes you gotta make some tough decisions 💪.

Anyway, at least we have a plan in place now 📊... fingers crossed it works out. But what's next? Will we be seeing more of these shutdowns? Only time will tell ⏰.

I'm just glad it's over 🙌, you know? I mean, 43 days is like an eternity, especially for those who were struggling financially. I was getting worried sick about my friends who work in federal services, they must have been living on edge. And can you imagine having to apply for food assistance because of a government shutdown? It's just not right 🤕.

But I'm also kinda curious why the Republicans couldn't just agree on something. I mean, it sounds like they were both willing to compromise, but they didn't want to give in too much... I guess that's politics, huh? 🤷‍♀️ Anyway, now that it's over, let's hope we can focus on more important stuff than just who was right and wrong... how about healthcare for all? 💊

man... 43 days is crazy 🤯! i feel bad for all those federal workers who missed paychecks during that whole shutdown thing. it's like, how do you survive without a steady paycheck? 🤑 and don't even get me started on the travelers at airports... that must've been super stressful 😬.

so yeah, the bill might seem like a good deal for republicans, but what about those americans who rely on affordable healthcare? they're gonna feel it in their wallets if that tax credit doesn't get extended 🤕. and don't even get me started on the language in that bill... suing senators over electronic records? what's next? 🚫

😊 So I'm reading about the government shutdown and I gotta say, 43 days is crazy 🤯. Like, what even happens in that kind of time? It's not like they didn't know they were gonna have a problem coming up. Anywayz, Trump signing this bill and stuff... it's all good, right? 😊 Problem is, it doesn't solve anything for those people who are struggling to pay healthcare premiums. I mean, millions of Americans are about to get hit with huge price hikes 🤑. And the Democrats are still like "we're not done" 🤔. Like, what's gonna happen next? Are we just gonna keep going back and forth like this forever? 😕 It's all pretty frustrating, you know? 🤷‍♂️

omg, finally!!! 🙌🏼 I'm so relieved that the government shutdown is over! 😊 It was getting really scary for all those federal workers who missed paychecks 💸 and travelers who got stuck at airports 🛫️. Thanks to President Trump signing this bill, we can start looking forward to a more stable future 🌞. And I know it's not a perfect deal for everyone, but let's be real, sometimes you gotta take what you can get 🤷‍♀️. Can't wait to see what happens next in Dec! 💪

I'm so relieved it's over 🙌. I mean, 43 days is like, forever 😩. And now we're back to where we were before, which is basically nothing changed 💁‍♀️. The thing that really gets me is the fact that some people are already saying 'this fight is not over' 🔥. Like, come on, can't we just agree to disagree for once? 🤷‍♂️ We're all adults here, right? And what's with the drama about the health insurance premiums? It feels like we're just going in circles 💔. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if anyone actually gets anything done next time around 🕰️.

.. I mean, I'm glad the government shutdown is over 🙌, but I gotta say, it's kinda sad that we're still debating the same stuff over and over again 😔. Like, can't we just agree on something already?! 🤷‍♂️ It feels like we're stuck in some kind of never-ending loop.

And don't even get me started on the whole healthcare thing... 💸 I mean, I'm all for trying to help people out, but it's crazy that millions are gonna lose coverage because of this 🚫. It's like, what's the point of even having a government if we can't figure this stuff out?!

I know Republicans and Democrats aren't always on the same page, but come on... let's try to find some common ground here 😊. We're all human beings, right? 💕 I just wish they'd focus on making things better for everyone instead of fighting over who gets what 🤝.

Ugh, I don't know man... it's like we're taking two steps forward and one step back every time 🚶‍♂️. Can't we just work together for once?! 💪

😓 I'm still trying to wrap my head around that 43-day shutdown... it feels like an eternity 🕰️. I'm glad President Trump signed that bill, but let's not forget about those federal workers who were left without paychecks 🤑. It's crazy that they had to deal with this uncertainty. And what about all the travelers and people dependent on food assistance programs? They must've been super stressed out 😩.

And now that it's over, I'm still wondering if this fight is really over 💁‍♀️. Rep Jeffries said "This fight is not over," so I'm curious to see what happens next 🤔. Will lawmakers be able to find common ground on that tax credit issue? It feels like we're back at square one again 😕.

I mean, can we please just agree on something already?! 🙄 It's time for some bipartisan love ❤️. And what about all the people who are still struggling with health insurance premiums? We need to think about them too 💊. Anyway, I guess that's just life in politics... unpredictable 🤯!

😊 I'm just so relieved that the government shutdown is over! 43 days is crazy long, right? 🤯 At least we can finally put an end to all the uncertainty. The fact that lawmakers were able to find a compromise and come up with a bill is super impressive. 💪 And it's awesome that President Trump signed it, which means federal workers who missed paychecks are getting their money back! 🤑

I do feel bad for those people who depend on food assistance programs, though – they're probably still dealing with some anxiety about how this whole thing affected them. 😔 But overall, I think this is a big win for everyone involved. And hey, maybe now we can focus on finding solutions to the issues that really matter, like extending the enhanced tax credit! 🤞

😩🤯 43 days is ages 🕰️, like forever! I'm so relieved the government shutdown is over 💨, but now we gotta wait & see what happens with that tax credit 🤑. If they don't get it sorted out, people are gonna be stuck with higher health insurance premiums 😓. And can you believe they were gonna fire federal workers? 🤯👋 I'm all for compromise, but this is just crazy 🙄. On the bright side, travelers at airports & those who needed food assistance can finally breathe a sigh of relief 🙌. Now let's hope lawmakers can find some common ground 🤝... or else we'll be back to this again 🚫😬

🤔 so like i dont fully get why they had a 43 day shutdown in the first place... cant they just work things out when its needed? 🙄 and now they have to deal with more people losing health insurance coverage? that sounds super stressful for everyone involved... 💸 also, whats up with the whole lawsuit thing on senator's records? like why would you even do that? 🤷‍♂️
