Psychological Horror ‘The Most Mysterious Man’ Secures Malaysian Co-Financing at JAFF Market

Indonesia's Psychological Horror "The Most Mysterious Man" Lands Co-Financing from Malaysian Firm at Asian Film Market

Ismail Basbeth's gripping psychological horror feature, "The Most Mysterious Man," has secured co-financing from Malaysia-based Phoenix Films Sdn Bhd. The deal was finalized during the JAFF Market 2025, where the project marked a significant milestone in its development.

For Ismail Basbeth, this latest collaboration marks an original concept developed entirely under his producer-director partnership with Ruang Basbeth Bercerita and Lyza Anggraheni. The story follows a devoted craftsman whose life unravels upon discovering another family occupying his home and loved ones missing. As he searches for answers, paranoia and violence take hold.

With Anggraheni at the helm, the project underwent an intensive development process at Busan Asian Film School over seven months. "The Most Mysterious Man" previously secured recognition as a winner of the TAICCA Award in 2024 and was selected for the Asian Producers Network 2024 at the Singapore International Film Festival.

Anggraheni also recently received a prestigious grant from Indonesia's Ministry of Culture to support her separate project, "The Light of Fire." Her work on "The Most Mysterious Man" has been further supported by the Talents Tokyo 2023 program.

Production will be handled in co-production with Matta Cinema Production and Phoenix Films Sdn Bhd. As production gears up for a planned start in 2026, the project is seeking additional co-production and international distribution partnerships to bring this thought-provoking horror to global audiences.

🤔 I mean, umm... I think I'm gonna disagree with myself here 🤦‍♂️... Like, on one hand, it's awesome that "The Most Mysterious Man" is getting co-financing from a Malaysian firm, 'cause it shows there's still potential for international collaboration and funding in the film industry. But, on the other hand... I don't know, man... 🤷‍♂️ It feels like we're just repeating the same old pattern of Hollywood-style horror movies being made by people who are only interested in getting their projects funded from a few select places, rather than truly supporting indie filmmakers and giving them the freedom to make what they want. And, like, I know Phoenix Films Sdn Bhd is legit and all 🙏, but... 🤔

omg did u hear about "The Most Mysterious Man"?? 🤯 its like, psychological horror at its finest i'm literally shaking thinking about it 😅 ismail basbeth & lyza anggraheni r geniuses for collab with phoenix films and gonna make this film hit the global scene in 2026 💥 gotta keep an eye on this one 👀

I'm not sure what's so mysterious about this deal... Co-financing from Malaysia sounds like just another part of the game, you know? I mean, Phoenix Films Sdn Bhd has done it before with other films, so why should "The Most Mysterious Man" be any different? Ismail Basbeth and Lyza Anggraheni must have done something right to get this attention, but is it really about the story or just about getting their foot in the door? 🤔 And what's up with all these awards and grants? It's like they're trying to prove a point rather than make a good film. I'm still not convinced that "The Most Mysterious Man" will be anything special... 😐

man... ismail basbeth's project sounds so intense lol 🤯 it's like, what if your whole life was turned upside down like that? no wonder he got that grant from indonesia's ministry of culture 🙌 and now phoenix films is on board too... gotta see how they bring this story to life 🎥 hopefully, it'll be a wild ride 😱

I'm loving how Ruang Basbeth Bercerita and Lyza Anggraheni have been working together, they seem like an unstoppable duo when it comes to crafting a thought-provoking horror movie. And the fact that Anggraheni got a grant from Indonesia's Ministry of Culture is a major win, I'm rooting for her project too. With Phoenix Films Sdn Bhd and Matta Cinema Production on board, this movie could be a global phenomenon 🌎. Can't wait to see how it all comes together in 2026!
