A Queens mother, Nicole Boodhai, has been hit with a shocking charge of second-degree murder in the tragic death of her 15-month-old son, Charlie. Authorities say Boodhai, 28, was found in a locked bathroom with her child's lifeless body last month, and now she faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
According to officials, the incident occurred on December 29 after Boodhai's ex-partner left their home on 157th Street around 8am for work. The toddler's father returned later that morning and found his partner and child still asleep, but when he checked in with her, she allegedly told him she had murdered her son and was planning to take her own life.
The father immediately contacted his mother, who lived below them, asking her to check on Boodhai and Charlie. When the grandmother went upstairs, she discovered a locked bathroom door and was able to open it after assistance from another relative. Inside, they found Boodhai bleeding in the bathtub, cradling the unresponsive toddler.
Emergency responders were called, but unfortunately, Charlie's lifeless body was pronounced at a local hospital. Boodhai was taken to the hospital for treatment of her own injuries and psychiatric observation.
The Queens District Attorney has expressed their condolences to the family of the young victim, stating that Charlie "was a healthy and vivacious toddler" whose death is still under investigation. Boodhai's arraignment took place on Wednesday in Queens Supreme Court, where she was remanded into custody.
