Review: ‘Mary Jane’ powerfully critiques a health care system that is flawed to the bone

"Mary Jane," a 95-minute drama by Amy Herzog, continues to powerfully critique the US healthcare system nearly a decade after its premiere at Skokie's Northlight Theatre. The play delves into the life of Mary Jane, a single mother trying to navigate a broken healthcare system that leaves her struggling to care for her severely disabled son, Alex.

Herzog's script is both bleak and uplifting, highlighting the devastating financial, emotional, and physical toll the titular character pays in order to keep her son alive. The latter aspect of the play blossoms from Mary Jane's abject refusal to succumb to despair and the small community that she leans on to survive. Director Georgette Verdin masterfully shapes Herzog's minimalist, two-person scenes into an elegant, indelible portrait of unsung heroics.

The ensemble cast is exceptional, with Lucy Carapetyan delivering a standout performance as Mary Jane. Her portrayal of a defiant, upbeat mother who never quite masks her exhaustion, anger, and frustration is nuanced and powerful. The supporting cast, including Dara Cameron and Elana Elyce, rounds out the ensemble with memorable performances that add depth to the play.

One of the most striking aspects of "Mary Jane" is its gradual revelation of the crushing pressures Mary Jane faces with almost preternatural optimism. Herzog's script masterfully weaves together a narrative that humanizes Alex, who is born prematurely and suffers from multiple medical conditions, including lung disease, seizure disorder, pneumonia, and cognitive limitations. The sound design effectively conveys the grueling nature of Alex's condition.

The play also sheds light on the bureaucratic hurdles Mary Jane faces in her daily life, from navigating insurance meetings to searching for nurses to help with 24/7 care needs. These scenes are both poignant and thought-provoking, highlighting the need for a more compassionate and equitable healthcare system.

While the production closes on a somewhat abrupt note, it is not a deal-breaker. The overall impact of "Mary Jane" remains undeniable, powerfully critiquing the US healthcare system that leaves millions like Mary Jane struggling to survive. Northlight's production is well worth seeing for its nuanced performances and powerful portrayal of a flawed healthcare system.

I just watched this play about Mary Jane and I'm still reeling from it 🤯. The way the writer, Amy Herzog, shows how one person can keep going despite all the odds against them is so inspiring! And Lucy Carapetyan's performance as Mary Jane is just wow 😍. It makes you realize that even in the darkest moments, there's always a glimmer of hope and resilience 🌟. I think we need more stories like this one to raise awareness about how broken our healthcare system can be 💔.

I just watched this drama "Mary Jane" 🤯 and I'm still reeling from it. The way they portray the struggles of a single mom trying to care for her son with special needs is so raw and emotional it's like you're right there in the room with them. I mean, the sound design is insane - it really puts you in the shoes of Mary Jane, feeling all her pain and frustration. And that Lucy Carapetyan, she's incredible 🙌. I love how the play humanizes Alex too, making him more than just a character, but a real person. It's like, we're supposed to feel bad for Mary Jane, and we should be advocating for change, you know? The US healthcare system is messed up and this play shows us why. We need more stories like "Mary Jane" to keep pushing for better care and support for families like hers 💖

I'm still thinking about Mary Jane and how her story is so raw it hurts. I mean, we all know our healthcare system is messed up but this play really puts a human face on the struggles people are facing every day 🤕. I love how Lucy Carapetyan's performance just breaks my heart, she's like the ultimate caregiver 😭. The thing that frustrates me the most is that these issues are still so real and relatable to so many families out there. It's not just about Mary Jane or Alex, it's about all the people who can't get the care they need 🤝.

Man 🤔, this play 'Mary Jane' got me thinking about how we treat our most vulnerable members of society... I mean, Alex's story breaks my heart 🥣. It's like, we're so focused on 'curing' people, but what about the ones who can't be 'cured'? What about the ones who need love and care more than medicine? 💕 The way Mary Jane holds it together despite everything is truly inspiring... and also kinda terrifying 😱. I mean, how do you keep going when it feels like the system is stacked against you? 🤯 And that's what 'Mary Jane' does so well - it shines a light on the dark corners of our healthcare system and shows us the humanity in the face of adversity 💡. Anyway, if you haven't seen this play yet, def check it out... it'll leave you feeling all the feels 😊

I gotta say, this play sounds super intense 🤯. I mean, 95 minutes is a looong time, but it must be that good if it's still getting talked about nearly a decade after its premiere 🕰️. The fact that it sheds light on the harsh realities of the US healthcare system is really important - we need more plays like this to raise awareness and spark change 💡. I'm all for giving it up to director Georgette Verdin and the whole cast, especially Lucy Carapetyan who sounds like she absolutely nailed her role as Mary Jane 🎭.

omg i'm literally shook by this play mary jane is a total game changer it's so raw and honest about the struggles people face with our broken healthcare system I feel like it's a cry for help but also a testament to human resilience the sound design is insane btw it really conveys how hard life must be for alex and his mom lucy carapetyan is EVERYTHING she brings such depth and nuance to mary jane i'm already looking forward to the next production of this play

💖 This drama, Mary Jane, just breaks my heart 🤕 but in the best possible way. I mean, can you imagine having to care for your child with so many medical issues on top of dealing with a broken healthcare system? It's like, no wonder Mary Jane is strong enough to keep going despite all the obstacles 😱. And Lucy Carapetyan's performance? Absolutely stunning 🌟. The way she conveys Mary Jane's emotions and resilience... I'm getting chills just thinking about it 😊. What I love most about this play is how it humanizes those struggling with the system, you know? It's like, we need to start seeing these people as heroes, not just statistics 🤝. Anyway, if you haven't seen Mary Jane yet, trust me, you gotta check it out 👍

I'm so inspired by this play - it's like, totally heartbreaking but also kinda hopeful? I mean, Mary Jane is literally fighting tooth & nail to care for her son, and it's just... wow. The way the director brings out the community that supports her is beautiful. Lucy Carapetyan's performance as Mary Jane is just amazing, she conveys so much emotion without saying a word 🤯

I also love how the play shows the human side of healthcare, like how frustrating it can be when you're trying to get help for your kid but the system is all slow and bureaucratic. It's like, we need more stories like this to change people's minds about the importance of compassionate care 🤝

OMG u guyz! 🤯 I just watched "Mary Jane" on stage & it was SOOO emotional!!! 💔 The way the lead actress Lucy Carapetyan portrayed Mary Jane as a strong mom fighting 2 care 4 her son Alex, who's got some serious health probs 🤕 was literally heart-wrenching. I mean, can u imagine having 2 navigate this broken healthcare system w/ no support? 😩 It's like they're playing with people's lives, fam! 💸 The play is def making me wanna be more involved in advocating 4 better care 4 people w/ disabilities 🤝. Also, the sound design was on point, it felt like Alex's struggles were right there w/ u 🎧. Overall, I'd say this play needs 2 be seen ASAP! 👏
