‘Rising star’ female wolf from Yellowstone’s most famous pack is apparently taken out by poacher

Mystery Shrouds Yellowstone Wolf's Sudden Disappearance, Poachers Suspected

A well-known female gray wolf from the Junction Butte pack at Yellowstone National Park is believed to have been killed by poachers after her tracking collar sent a "mortality signal" on Christmas Day. The park service has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

The 31-year-old female, known as Wolf 1478F, was part of one of the most photographed and viewed wolf families in Yellowstone due to its proximity to the park's busy roads. Her sudden disappearance on December 25th led investigators to believe she may have been the target of a poaching incident.

A search team found only her severed collar, discarded into a tree, and no sign of the wolf's body. The investigation suggests that Wolf 1478F was likely killed and taken away by poachers in the Montana Wolf Management Unit 313 area.

This unit had been closed for hunting since November 16th due to a legal quota already being met. However, it appears that a poacher managed to evade authorities. In response to this incident, two wolf advocacy groups have contributed an additional $30,000 to a reward of $31,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

The Junction Butte pack consists of 15 members, including 13 black wolves and two gray wolves, which spend most of their time within Yellowstone's safety. Despite this low fear factor towards humans, there was no evidence of foul play within the national park.

It has been revealed that Wolf 1478F belonged to one of the most viewed wolf families in Yellowstone due to its proximity to the park's busy roads.

Omg, this is so crazy 🤯! I mean, who would do something like that to a beautiful wolf? It's just devastating to think about her family finding out she was gone and just her collar being left behind 🌿💔. And now they're offering a reward of $31k for anyone with info... hopefully someone comes forward soon 🤞.

I've been following the Yellowstone wolves on camera for years, it's heartbreaking to see this happen. I mean, they're already living in a national park, but there are still people out there who think hunting them is okay 🙅‍♂️. It's just not right.

Do you guys think we'll ever be able to fully protect these amazing animals from poachers and hunters? 💪

Ugh, this is so messed up 🤕. Another wolf killed by poachers in Yellowstone. Like, can't they see how iconic and important these animals are? And for what? A few bucks on the black market? It's just heartbreaking thinking about Wolf 1478F being all alone in the Montana forest, no chance to roam free or hunt with her pack anymore 😔. The fact that someone managed to evade authorities is just mind-boggling. I mean, what kinda person does this kind of thing? Anyway, glad the park service is taking action and the wolf advocacy groups are stepping up to help find justice for Wolf 1478F 💔.

omg i cant believe what happened to wolf 1478f 🤯 she was like so old and had a tracking collar on her why did they kill her tho?! 😢 i feel bad for her fam too, they must be super stressed rn 🐺💔 i wonder if the poachers got caught yet? hopefully they do soon 🚔👮‍♂️ did u know that wolves can run up to 40 mph? 🏃‍♀️ thats so fast! and btw what's with all these wolf fams in yellowstone lol are they like, the most popular animals there now? 📸😂

I don’t usually comment but... I mean, what’s going on with these poachers? 🤬 They’re just killing innocent wolves like they own the place. I don’t get why people can be so cruel. And it’s not like Wolf 1478F was a threat to anyone or anything. She was just trying to live her life in Yellowstone like any other wolf.

And now that two wolf advocacy groups are contributing more money to the reward, I hope they catch whoever is behind this and make them pay. 🤑 It’s crazy that poaching is still happening at Yellowstone. The park service should be doing a lot more to protect these amazing animals. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for a little respect from humans towards wildlife.

It’s also weird that the poacher managed to evade authorities, especially since the Montana Wolf Management Unit was already closed for hunting. What kind of person can just do that? 🤔

I mean, what a shock 🤦‍♀️... another human thinks they can just come into our home and take out one of our own. I'm sure it had nothing to do with the fact that Wolf 1478F was a bit of a celebrity 📸... always being photographed and watched by humans. Meanwhile, the poachers who took her out are probably having the time of their lives, laughing all the way back to civilization 🤣. And good luck tracking them down, park rangers! I'm sure those woods are just crawling with clues 💡. On the bright side, there's a $30k reward now, so maybe this will motivate someone to come forward and make things right 👮‍♀️.

this is so sad 🐺😔... you would think with all the cameras and tracking collars they'd be able to protect these beautiful wolves from people who just wanna harm them for a trophy or whatever... 31 years old, she was part of this amazing pack, her loss is huge 💔. it's crazy that someone managed to sneak in a hunt when already laws were in place to keep poaching at bay 🤦‍♀️. hope whoever finds out who did this gets held accountable and the reward helps bring them down 👮

This is just plain sick what happened to wolf 1478F 🙅‍♂️. Like, these poachers think they can just waltz into our national parks and start hunting endangered animals without any consequences? It's like they're above the law or something 🚫. I'm so angry that the search team found only her collar in a tree with no sign of her body, it's like they tried to cover their tracks or something 🔍.

And now these wolf advocacy groups are offering this huge reward for info leading to the poachers' arrest and conviction, which is totally on point 💪. I'm all for giving people who do bad things severe punishment, it'll definitely send a message that we're not messing around with wildlife crime 🚫. The fact that there was no evidence of foul play within Yellowstone's safety is just wild 🤯. Someone needs to step up and take responsibility for this heinous act 💥

Ugh, this is so disheartening 🤕... I mean, can't people just leave wildlife alone? Like, what's the point of even having a tracking collar if it's just gonna get ditched like trash in a tree? 🌳 And now Wolf 1478F is gone, and we'll never know what happened to her. It's all so sad 😔... I remember when I was a kid, we used to have wolves roaming around Yellowstone without any problem... now it's just a bunch of humans causing trouble 🚫. The thought that poachers are targeting these amazing animals is just infuriating 💥. And the fact that they managed to evade the authorities is just a shame 🙅‍♂️.

🐺😱 gotta say, it's super sus that they found her collar but no body 🤔. It feels like poachers think they're above the law or something 😒. Anyone else feel like this is just a distraction from the real issues with wolf conservation? 🌳💔 the Junction Butte pack has been living in Yellowstone for ages, and it's crazy that they still have to deal with this kind of thing. what's up with the closed unit being reopened anyway? seems like an open-and-shut case to me 🚫.

😱 OMG what a tragedy! 🙅‍♂️ I'm so sad about Wolf 1478F, she was like a celebrity in Yellowstone 😢. How could someone do this to her?! 🤯 It's just not right. Those poachers need to be caught and brought to justice 💪. The thought of them killing her and taking away her beautiful life is just devastating 😭.

And the fact that they discarded her collar like it was nothing, just a piece of trash 🚮, makes my blood boil! 🔥 How could they be so heartless?! 🤷‍♂️ I'm glad the park service is investigating this and offering a reward to catch the person responsible 💸. Let's hope they get caught soon and face the consequences 😬.

I just can't imagine how her pack must be feeling right now 🐺. They lost a beloved member, a sister, a friend... it's just heartbreaking 😔. We need to make sure these wolves are protected and safe in their habitat 🌳. It's our responsibility as humans to care for and respect them ❤️.
