Romanian bistro Bar Gabi opens in Hazel Park - Detroit Metro Times

Romanians Bring Taste of Home to Hazel Park with Bar Gabi's Grand Opening

A new culinary gem is set to open its doors in the heart of Hazel Park, serving up a modern take on traditional Romanian cuisine. Led by husband-and-wife chef duo Gabriel and Gabriela Botezan, Bar Gabi promises to transport patrons to the sun-kissed lands of Eastern Europe.

For the couple, who met in Detroit but hail from Romania, this venture is more than just a restaurant – it's a labor of love. "Opening Bar Gabi for me and my wife means everything," says Gabriel. "We're finally able to share our culture, food, and passion with the community."

Gabriela echoes her husband's sentiment, adding that their goal is to showcase Romanian cuisine, often overlooked in America. "This is about sharing who we are," she explains. "Our food and hospitality at its finest – it's time to celebrate it."

The menu boasts a range of dishes inspired by traditional Romanian recipes, including the Botezan's take on the iconic Tomahawk Schnitzel, served with smoked paprika and mustard greens, as well as Transylvanian Goulash. Meat lovers will also appreciate the "Vaca Moo" steak, marinated in Hungarian peppers and paired with hand-cut fries.

Desserts are just as enticing, featuring Romanian Cremes, Albinita honey cake, and a classic tiramisu. It's clear that Gabriel and Gabriela have put their heart and soul into crafting an authentic culinary experience that will leave diners craving more.

Behind the scenes, Bar Gabi's team is hard at work perfecting every detail. The cocktail program, led by Kenneth Laatz, offers a range of non-alcoholic options to complement the food. Meanwhile, Colin Tury has designed the space with framed embroidery from the Botezans' family in Romania, adding a touch of warmth and hospitality.

The adjacent former Frame space is also available for private parties, setting the stage for special events like chef collaborations. For now, Bar Gabi invites diners to come and taste the flavors of home – Romanians can proudly wear their heritage on their sleeves.

Located at 23839 John R Rd., Hazel Park, Bar Gabi is set to open its doors this Friday, October 24th. Mark your calendars and get ready for a culinary journey that will leave you feeling like family.

so there's this new restaurant in hazel park called bar gabi and it's literally the most exciting thing i've heard all week 🤩 they're from romania and they're serving up traditional dishes with a modern twist, like smoky paprika on tomahawk schnitzel. what i love is that they're not just trying to fit in with american cuisine, but they're actually showcasing their culture and heritage through food. it's all about sharing who you are, and i think that's something we can all get behind 🙌 and the space is literally going to be gorgeous, with this beautiful embroidery from their family in romania. it's a labor of love, just like everything else they've done so far. can't wait to try bar gabi out on friday! 👏

OMG I'm SO down for trying out Bar Gabi in Hazel Park! 🤩 As a huge foodie, I love when restaurants bring unique flavors from around the world to our doorstep. Romanian cuisine is literally the last thing on my radar (im a total pasta and pizza girl lol), but reading about Bar Gabi's modern take has got me super curious 😂. I mean who wouldn't want to try traditional dishes like Tomahawk Schnitzel and Transylvanian Goulash?!? And the dessert menu sounds AMAZING! 🍰👀 Can't wait to hear what everyone thinks of it when it opens this Friday, Oct 24th 💯

I'm low-key excited about this new restaurant in Hazel Park, but I gotta say, the fact that they're bringing traditional Romanian cuisine to the table is long overdue 🤷‍♀️. Our food scene has been missing out on some amazing flavors from Eastern Europe for far too long. The fact that the chef duo is putting their heart and soul into sharing their culture through food is really beautiful ❤️. I love how they're not just trying to recreate traditional dishes, but also adding their own twist to them, like the Tomahawk Schnitzel with smoked paprika - genius! 🤔 What's great too is that they have a focus on community and hospitality, which is what makes a restaurant truly special. Can't wait to try it out this Friday 🎉

OMG, I'm SO down for trying out Bar Gabi!! 🤩 Romanian food is literally so underrated in the US, but I'm all about that culture exchange 💖! The Botezan's take on Tomahawk Schnitzel and Vaca Moo steak sound like total game-changers 🍴🔥. And can we talk about the desserts?! Romanian Cremes and Albinita honey cake? Yes, please! 😋 I'm also loving the idea of private parties in the adjacent space - it's going to be so lit! 🎉 Let's get this foodie party started and show our support for the Botezan couple 💪. Their passion and dedication to sharing their culture is truly inspiring, and I can already imagine the vibes in that restaurant are going to be amazing 🌟.

🌿 I'm so hyped about this new Romanian spot in Hazel Park! It's amazing how food can transport us back home, you know? 😊 They're not just serving dishes, they're sharing their culture and passion with the community. The menu sounds incredible - who wouldn't want to try that Tomahawk Schnitzel or Vaca Moo steak? 🤤 It's awesome that they're highlighting Romanian cuisine, it's definitely underrated here in America.

I love how the Botezans are putting their heart and soul into this venture, it shows in every detail. From the cocktail program to the decor, everything feels so authentic and cozy. I'm def gonna check it out this Friday when it opens - who knows, maybe I'll discover a new favorite dish! 🍴👍

I'm so done with these "foodie" spots that just copy everyone else's recipes... Bar Gabi's attempt to bring traditional Romanian cuisine to Hazel Park feels like a novelty, not a genuine representation of the culture 🤪. It's all about marketing and selling a "taste of home" experience. Where's the authenticity? I mean, what's next? A generic Italian restaurant that claims to be "inspired by Tuscany"? Give me a break! The menu looks like it was ripped straight from a food blog somewhere 📚. And don't even get me started on the prices... gonna be a pricey experience for regular folks 🤑.

omg i'm so hyped about this new restaurant!!! 🤩 bar gabi sounds like an amazing spot to try some real romanian food... i've never had tomahawk schnitzel before but smoked paprika and mustard greens sound insane! 🤤 have you guys tried any good ethnic restaurants in detroit? what's the best way to get authentic flavors when it comes to food from different cultures? 😊
