Emergency Responders Thwart Horses Wild Ride on NYC Highway Near JFK Airport
A frantic scene unfolded on the highways near John F. Kennedy International Airport Sunday night as a horse broke free from its corral and galloped onto the JFK Expressway, prompting swift action from Port Authority police who rapidly brought the situation under control.
Video footage captured by social media users shows the equine suddenly appearing on an exit ramp for the airport, careening past motels and parking lots before dodging onto the Van Wyck Expressway. The officers at the scene swiftly assessed the situation and determined the horse had crossed airport property before continuing southward, prompting a high-speed pursuit.
Thanks to the quick thinking and decisive action of Port Authority police, the wild ride came to an abrupt end as the officers safely contained and captured the horse at the entrance to Terminal 1. Miraculously, the animal emerged unscathed, with the owner soon arriving on the scene.
According to Curly's Cowboy Center founder R.W. "Curly" Hall, the horse β identified as Sundance β had broken free from its corral during a car-and-trailer maneuver when an open gate was left ajar. The mishap occurred in the midst of holiday preparations at the equestrian center, located just under a mile from the airport.
Hall described the incident as a "mishap" that was "just that," with no ill intent on his part or Sundance's owner, who happened to be present during the rescue efforts. The Port Authority Police Lieutenants Benevolent Association praised a lieutenant for expertly halting the horse thanks to their "quick thinking and calm control."
As authorities restored order, traffic around JFK Airport was largely unaffected by 8 p.m., with officials credited for their swift response in preventing any significant disruptions.
