SEPTA's Morning Express Service Returns on Monday After Two-Month Suspension
The Regional Rail morning express service is set to resume operations on Monday after being suspended for two months, thanks to the clearance of 223 Silverliner IV railcars from mandatory repairs ordered by the Federal Railroad Administration. The authority had switched to an all-local schedule in the fall as part of a repair process initiated following electrical fires in early 2025.
As of Friday, SEPTA has completed repairs on 180 of the affected Silverliner IV cars, with General Manager Scott Sauer describing this milestone as "a major step" towards restoring full Regional Rail service. The reinstatement of morning express trips is expected to optimize all services by allowing for more efficient deployment of trains at high-volume stations.
According to SEPTA, the suspension of morning express trains resulted in the elimination of 24 trips on six heavily trafficked Regional Rail lines, causing crowding and subsequent delays and missed connections. Commuters are advised to double-check schedules before Monday's service resumes, as some train routes will skip previously served stations since October.
While evening express services resumed in late November, a temporary solution involving 10 cars from the Maryland Area Regional Commuter Rail kept the system running until now. With repairs complete, Sauer reported that the refurbished Silverliner IV cars are performing well, paving the way for enhanced regional rail services.
