Spycops sent thousands of surveillance reports to MI5, inquiry documents reveal

Thousands of surveillance reports compiled by undercover police officers who spied on political campaigners have been routinely sent to MI5, revealing a vast network of information gathering and collaboration between the two agencies.

The undercover operations, which took place in the late 1960s until at least the 1990s, involved long-term deployments of police spies infiltrating mainly left-wing protest groups, including campaigns against racism and nuclear weapons, the Socialist Workers party, justice campaigns, and trade unions.

These reports logged personal information about protesters, including their marriages, sexuality, holiday plans, and bank accounts, as well as details of their planned political action. The information also included photographs and even details about children, with some reports recording the political beliefs of individuals as young as 13.

It has emerged that most of these surveillance reports were sent to MI5 at a time when the Security Service was being heavily criticised by civil liberties groups for its snooping activities on left-wing and progressive campaigners. In fact, Stella Rimington, who led MI5 in the 1990s, described the agency's tactics as "over-enthusiastic".

MI5 maintained vast files on individuals, which were used to vet people applying for certain government posts, but this practice has also been accused of unfairly blocking many people deemed too left-wing from getting jobs. The agency was even asked by police spies to provide specific details about individual campaigners, including "shopping lists" of information such as home addresses.

The documents show that MI5 paid tribute to the work of undercover officers, describing it as "valuable and very significant", but also reveal a close relationship between the two agencies, with senior police officers and MI5 officials regularly meeting to discuss their shared targets. In some cases, MI5 warned about potential risks to its own spies.

The revelations come as part of the spycops inquiry, which is examining how police used undercover officers to spy on political groups between 1968 and at least 2010. The investigation has also uncovered a range of other controversies involving undercover policing, including deception and surveillance of grieving families.

๐Ÿค” Yeah, I'm surprised they didn't know about this already... I mean, come on, it's been out in the open since like the 90s! Anyway, what's crazy is that MI5 was just describing their tactics as "over-enthusiastic" back then. Like, hello? That's not exactly a ringing endorsement of their methods ๐Ÿ™„. And can you believe they paid tribute to these undercover officers? It's all about how they "valued" the work, but really it sounds like they were just using them for whatever they wanted to spy on ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I'm also kinda curious why this came out now... is it because people are finally demanding answers about what went down during that time? I mean, we do know the cops were involved in all sorts of shady stuff, but this level of detail from MI5? That's just wild ๐Ÿคฏ.

๐Ÿคฏ Like I'm so shocked about this ๐Ÿ˜ฒ... undercover cops spying on protests and getting all that personal info ๐Ÿ“... it's like, what were they thinking? ๐Ÿ‘€ They were basically snooping around people's private lives for years without any checks ๐Ÿšซ... and the worst part is those reports got sent to MI5, so now we know how far down the rabbit hole this went ๐Ÿฐ... the fact that senior police officers and MI5 officials met regularly to discuss targets just adds to the creepiness ๐Ÿ˜ณ... gotta say, it's a big red flag when an agency is being asked to provide specific info about individuals, like shopping lists ๐Ÿ“... and Stella Rimington saying their tactics were "over-enthusiastic" is like, totally understated ๐Ÿคฃ... this whole thing needs more light shone on it ASAP ๐Ÿ’ก

๐Ÿค” I'm not surprised by this revelation at all. I mean, come on, it's about time someone exposed the truth about these underhanded agencies. MI5 and the police were always too keen to spy on anyone who didn't fit their narrow view of what's "acceptable". And let's be real, when did civil liberties ever get any respect? ๐Ÿ™„ The fact that Stella Rimington described their tactics as "over-enthusiastic" is just code for they knew they were doing something wrong. The whole thing reeks of a deep-seated distrust of anyone who dares to challenge the status quo. And don't even get me started on how this practice was used to vet people for government jobs - what a joke. It's no wonder so many left-wing and progressive individuals were unfairly blocked from getting jobs. This is just another example of how our justice system is rigged against those who need it most. ๐Ÿšซ

Ugh, I'm still trying to wrap my head around this ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. Like, what's up with these old records being dug up? It's like they're saying "hey, we totally abused our power" ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. All those people, their personal info and all... it's just so invasive ๐Ÿšซ. And to think some of that was used to vet people for jobs? That's just wrong ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. I get that security is important, but come on! You can't just spy on people without consequences ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ. These documents show a pretty close relationship between the police and MI5... it's like they were in cahoots or something ๐Ÿค”. This whole thing just feels so shady ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ.

I'm so shocked by this ๐Ÿคฏ... it's like we thought the whole 'freedom' thing was just an illusion ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. But seriously, isn't it wild how these cops were basically gathering intel on people just for being active in politics? I mean, what's the point of that? It feels like they're trying to silence dissenting voices rather than engaging with the issues.

And think about all the innocent people who got caught up in this. The undercover ops are a huge reminder that our individual freedoms come with some real trade-offs. We can't just expect to be left alone when we choose to participate in society โ€“ there's always gonna be someone watching, trying to gauge our motivations or gather intel.

The 'over-enthusiastic' tactics described by Stella Rimington? That's some messed up stuff right there ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. But at the same time, it's a sobering reminder that power can corrupt even those with the best intentions. It's all about balance, I guess โ€“ we need to be aware of where our freedom ends and where our responsibility begins.

So yeah, this whole thing is pretty disturbing ๐Ÿค•. We gotta keep fighting for transparency and accountability in our institutions โ€“ it's the only way we'll ever get true justice ๐Ÿ™

๐Ÿคฏ just saw these reports from 60s-90s and I'm mind blown ๐Ÿคฏ like how could they get away with this?! collecting info on ppl's personal life, marriages, kids... it's so invasive ๐Ÿ˜ฑ and what's even more messed up is that it was all done under the guise of "vetting" people for gov posts ๐Ÿ™„ like who gets to decide what's left-wing and not?! ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ this whole spycops thing is a whole can of worms ๐Ÿœ

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ I'm low-key shocked by these documents - the fact that undercover cops were basically spying on people's personal lives for decades is just wild. Like, who gives the police this kind of access to people's finances? It's crazy how far the security services will go to keep tabs on certain groups. And can we talk about how messed up it is that some of these reports included details about kids? ๐Ÿคฏ This whole thing reeks of institutional abuse and a complete disregard for people's privacy. I mean, Stella Rimington's comment about being "over-enthusiastic" sounds like just a fancy way of saying they were being reckless with power. The whole system feels so broken right now...

๐Ÿคฏ this is seriously messed up!! like, who gives consent for their personal life to be shared with two spy agencies? ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ the fact that it was even done on left-wing protest groups is just a massive affront to democracy ๐Ÿคฌ and I'm not surprised civil liberties groups were all over MI5's head back in the day. these reports are like something out of a dystopian novel, where they're literally logging your kids' details ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ˜ฑ. it's wild that Stella Rimington even called their tactics "over-enthusiastic" ๐Ÿ™„ and the shopping lists of info? that's just on another level ๐Ÿ˜ณ. we need to get to the bottom of this whole spycops inquiry ASAP ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿ˜ฑ can you even believe this?! they were like total info vampires ๐Ÿฆ‡, sucking up every single detail about these people's lives just to discredit them or keep tabs on their activism ๐Ÿคฅ. it's insane that MI5 was basically working hand in hand with the police, sharing intel and even asking each other for specific details about targets ๐Ÿ“. this is some serious 007 stuff, but not in a good way ๐Ÿ˜ˆ. and now we're finding out that these files were used to vet people for jobs too? that's like, totally unacceptable ๐Ÿ‘Ž. it's no wonder people felt the need to fight against corruption and oppression back then ๐Ÿ’ช.

I'm low-key shocked that this went down for so long ๐Ÿคฏ. Like, these agencies were literally watching people's personal lives, right? That's some major invasion of privacy. And it's not like they were just targeting terrorists or anything, nope - it was mostly left-wing protesters and activists. I mean, can you imagine if the tables turned and those same agencies started spying on politicians and government officials? The hypocrisy is wild ๐Ÿ”ฅ. It's also crazy to think that MI5 would say their tactics were "over-enthusiastic" when they're basically describing their own wrongdoing ๐Ÿ˜‚. And what's with the request for shopping lists of info? Like, who does that? ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ I'm low-key disappointed by this revelation ๐Ÿค”. I mean, who wants to know someone's personal life, right? ๐Ÿ˜’ It's like, we get it, you're trying to keep us safe from 'radical' ideas, but do you really need to snoop on people's holidays and bank accounts? ๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐Ÿ’ธ The fact that these reports were sent to MI5 during a time when civil liberties groups were already scrutinizing their tactics just makes it all the more cringeworthy ๐Ÿ˜ณ.

And can we talk about how messed up it is that kids as young as 13 had their political views recorded? Like, what even is that? ๐Ÿคฏ It's like they're trying to control our thoughts and actions from birth. The idea that these reports were used to vet people for government jobs just adds another layer of unease ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I guess what really gets me is how little we talk about the darker side of history when it comes to national security and surveillance ๐Ÿคซ. It's like, we're always talking about how our freedoms are being threatened by terrorism and social media, but what about the threats from within? ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ The fact that these undercover operations were kept secret for so long just highlights how much of a cover-up there was ๐Ÿ”’.

Anyway, it's not all bad news ๐Ÿ˜Š. I'm glad that some of these reports are finally coming to light, and I hope the spycops inquiry uncovers even more truth about what really went on during this time period ๐Ÿ’ก.
