Starmer says closer ties with EU single market preferable to a customs union

Starmer pushes for closer EU ties as customs union gains support from some Labour MPs.

Labour leader Keir Starmer has signaled the party's desire to deepen its ties with the European Union, stating that a closer alignment with the single market is preferable to a customs union. The move comes as some within the party have called for a customs union with the EU, arguing it could bring economic benefits.

Starmer believes that aligning more closely with the single market will be in Britain's national interest, citing recent trade deals with the US and India as examples of successful cooperation. He acknowledged that much has changed since he argued for a customs union with the EU years ago, but now sees the single market as a better option.

The decision has drawn criticism from Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who called Starmer's comments a "Brexit betrayal" and accused him of surrendering Britain's freedom to cut regulation and strike its own trade deals. Farage also expressed concerns about potential cooperation with the EU on energy markets.

However, some Labour MPs have supported the idea of a customs union, including health secretary Wes Streeting and justice secretary David Lammy. A recent poll found that 13 Labour MPs had signed up to join a customs union, sparking tension within the party.

Starmer has warned his internal rivals that backing a customs union could lead to a government led by Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who has been vocal in his opposition to any relationship with Europe. The Labour leader believes that aligning more closely with the EU will allow Britain to be compassionate, reasonable, and live and let live.

The decision highlights the ongoing debate within the Labour party about its approach to Europe and trade. As the next general election approaches, Starmer's stance on closer ties with the EU is likely to become a key dividing line between Labour and Reform UK.

Aww, this is so complex 🀯... like, I get it, Keir Starmer wants us to be friends with the EU again, but some people are all worried about losing control over our own decisions πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. And then there's Nigel Farage being, well, his usual dramatic self πŸ˜’. It's hard not to feel like, we just wanna get on with it and figure out what works best for us, you know? πŸ’‘

But I guess the thing that really gets me is that it's all about who gets to lead the government next πŸ€”. Like, it's not just about the EU or trade anymore; it's about our future leaders and how they're gonna make decisions that affect our lives 🌟. So, yeah, this whole situation feels pretty overwhelming 🀯... but I'm sure we'll figure it out somehow πŸ’ͺ.

πŸ€” so i think starmer making this move is smart, he's thinking about the bigger picture, Britain needs to be part of something bigger than just itself 🌎, and having closer ties with the EU can bring in some serious economic benefits πŸ’Έ, plus we're not exactly swimming in trade deals right now πŸ˜…, and a customs union could lead to more regulation which isn't great for small businesses 🚫.

i get where farage is coming from though, it's understandable that he wants Britain to be able to make its own decisions and strike its own deals 🀝, but the problem is that we're not in the same place as we were a few years ago, and things have changed πŸ’₯, so maybe this customs union thing wasn't the best idea from the start πŸ”„.

anyway, it's good to see starmer taking the lead on this one, he's showing that labour can be pragmatic and think about the future 🌟, even if it means going against some of his own party members πŸ‘₯.

I think it's pretty telling that some Labour MPs are still down for a customs union with the EU πŸ€”. I mean, sure, there might be economic benefits, but Starmer's got a point about aligning more closely with the single market being in Britain's national interest πŸ’‘. Those trade deals with the US and India were pretty smooth sailin', if you ask me! 😊 But what really gets my goat is how Nigel Farage is just going to go off the deep end about this 🚫. I mean, come on, we can't have our leader being all inflexible and isolationist – it's like, we're a global nation, for cryin' out loud! 🌎 The idea that we need to surrender our freedom to cut regulation and strike our own trade deals is just plain ridiculous πŸ™„. I think Starmer's stance on this will really test the party's cohesion in the lead-up to the next election ⏰.

omg u guys this is like super interesting! 🀯 so starmer is saying that we should align more closely w/ the eu single market & it makes sense considering how well the trade deals w/ us & india have gone down... i think its cool 2 see labour thinking about how to move forward in a way that benefits britain πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ but i'm also curious to see how reform uk will react, they seem really opposed to any relationship w/ europe... and 13 labour MPs already signed up for a customs union? thats like a big deal!!! πŸ‘€ what do u guys think tho?

I think Starmer makes some sense here πŸ€”. Like, who doesn't want better trade deals, right? πŸš€ A customs union might seem like an easy way out, but trust me, it's not that straightforward. With the EU single market, we can still be our own boss while having access to a massive market 🌎. I mean, those trade deals with the US and India are proof that it works! πŸ’Έ Plus, think about all the other benefits like being part of a bigger security umbrella βš”οΈ. It's not a betrayal, it's about finding what works best for us 🀝. And let's be real, Farage is just being dramatic πŸ˜‚. A closer tie with the EU doesn't mean we lose control over our own trade decisions πŸ”’. So yeah, I'm all for this! πŸ‘

I'm totally down for a customs union 🚫πŸ’ͺ - who needs all this single market nonsense? We should be able to cut our own trade deals and make Britain great again, not tied to some faceless EU bureaucracy πŸ˜’. And yeah, it's about freedom to regulate how we want to and strike our own deals, not some half-baked idea of "living and letting live" 🀯. The US and India can show us how to do trade right, no need for the EU's handouts πŸ€‘. Starmer's just a sellout if you ask me πŸ‘Ž...

πŸ€” gotta say, starmer's on this one πŸ€‘ i mean, 13 labour MPs already signed up for customs union? that's some serious party infighting going down πŸ’Έ like, can't we all just get along on trade deals or something? πŸ™„ but for real though, i think starmer's right about aligning with the single market. it makes sense economically and all that πŸ’° plus, let's be real, who doesn't want to live and let live (like he said)? 😊 but Farage is gonna try and make a thing out of this? come on πŸ™„ reform uk is just mad 'cause they can't agree with anyone else 🀣.

πŸ€” so starmer is like saying we should just chill with eu and not try to be all special about our own trade deals... i mean its good that he's thinking about britain's national interest and stuff, but also some of his fellow labour MPs are being super divided about it 🀯 13 of them want a customs union? what's going on? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ anyway, starmer is probs hoping to avoid Farage's leadership vibes... lets see how this all plays out πŸ‘€

I'm not sure I agree with Keir Starmer's decision to ditch the customs union idea for now... πŸ€” I mean, it seems like some of our Labour MPs are getting cozy with Brussels too quickly. I know he says it'll be better for Britain's national interest and all that, but what about sovereignty? Don't we want to be able to strike our own trade deals without having to answer to the EU? 🚫 And what about those Labour MPs who've signed up for a customs union? Are they just party jumpers or genuinely concerned about economic benefits? I'm not convinced it's worth risking our freedom to cut regulations and make decisions that benefit Britain alone. 😐
