Subzero temperatures expected by end of week — 'Don't spend time outdoors unless you have to'

Bitter Temperatures Loom for Chicago Area, Residents Urged to Stay Indoors

Residents of the Chicago area are bracing for subzero temperatures expected by the end of this week, with officials warning that outdoor activities should be limited to only essential ones. The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook, cautioning against spending time outdoors unless absolutely necessary.

According to Gino Izzi, senior meteorologist at the weather service, temperatures are forecasted to drop below zero on Thursday night and remain there throughout Friday and Saturday. "Don't spend time outdoors unless you have to," Izzi advised. "If you do need to venture out, wear multiple layers of loose-fitting clothing to minimize exposure."

However, before the cold snap sets in, a winter storm is expected to sweep through the area on Tuesday night, bringing 1-2 inches of snow with it. While the north suburbs can expect heavier snowfall, the south suburbs will likely see lighter amounts.

As the system moves out by rush hour Wednesday, temperatures are expected to rise into the 20s, making Wednesday potentially the warmest day for a while. However, this warmth is short-lived, as a deep freeze is set to descend upon the area on Thursday.

On Friday, temperatures will plummet below zero, with the wind chill taking it even lower. "This looks noteworthy and unusual," Izzi said, "but not unprecedented or record-breaking." As the air temperature remains at or below zero, residents are advised to prioritize indoor activities and dress in layers to stay warm.

The weather service is cautioning against hazardous travel conditions throughout the week, especially late evening and early Wednesday morning. If you do need to venture out on Wednesday, be prepared for gusty winds and potentially drifting snow.

🌨️ omg, chicago is gonna be so cold this week!!! ❄️ i'm actually kinda excited (not really) that it's not supposed to last forever tho 🤞. people should def take the warnings seriously tho, especially if they gotta go out 2 do something essential. wear like a million layers & try 2 stay cozy 😊. i heard the north suburbs r gonna get hit w/ more snow than the south suburbs 🌨️. anywayz, hope every1 stays safe & warm this week! 💕

ugh, just what we needed, another excuse to stay indoors 🤦‍♀️. like we haven't been cooped up all day in our tiny apartments already. and great, a winter storm to "enjoy" before the cold snap hits - just what I wanted, more snow to shovel on top of everything else ❄️. can we just fast forward to spring already? 🙄

❄️ Oh man, Chicago's going all cold snap crazy! I mean, who needs a Netflix marathon when you can just huddle under a blanket with hot cocoa? 🍫👌 On a more serious note, subzero temps are no joke, folks! Dress like the Michelin Man, multiple layers and all that jazz. And don't even get me started on Wednesday's gusty winds... it sounds like Mother Nature is trying to give us a snow day (but not really, since it'll be freezing). I guess this is why they call it winter 😅.

😔 I feel so bad for people living in Chicago right now... like, literally freezing outside & can't even enjoy the winter wonderland? ❄️ The thought of spending hours bundled up just to get some essentials done is no joke! 🤯 It's like, can't we all just stay warm & cozy at home for a bit? 🏠💕 And I'm worried about those poor north suburbs getting hit with way more snow... 😨 what if the roads get super slippery?! 🚗😬

🌨️ ugh this cold snap is gonna be a total bummer... i mean i get it we need precautions but can't we just have a little bit of warmth for once? like i'm so over constantly bundling up even when i'm just running errands 🤗 also why does chicago always have to be the weather disaster capital? 😂 on the bright side if it gets really bad they should at least make s'mores mandatory 🍪

omg u guys chill lol this cold snap isnt that bad it's just a normal chicago winter thing thats happens every year ppl need 2 get a grip no 1 dies from subzero temps 🤣 plus think of all the cute pics u can take with ur frosty car windshield 💡 and don't even get me started on the snow it's like nature's own confetti ❄️ we should be appreciative not grumpy about it 😊

Ugh, Chicago's winter is like my aunt - it just won't stop complaining about the weather 🤣! Like, can't they make up their minds? One minute it's "stay indoors", next minute it's "go out and play in the snow". I'm trying to plan a sick Fortnite stream but no, it's too cold outside 😂. Anyway, if you do need to venture out, wear layers - trust me, you don't want to be that guy who freezes his buns off 🤦‍♂️. Also, side note, 20s on Wednesday? That's like the perfect temperature for a Netflix binge fest... anyone else with me on this? 😊

🤔 I'm skeptical about these subzero temps... like, how low are we talking? -20°C or worse? The National Weather Service is saying it's gonna be a deep freeze, but what exactly does that mean? Is this just another case of "cold weather" being hyped up for clicks?

And what's with all the warnings to stay indoors? Can't people just bundle up and go outside if they need to? I mean, I've lived in Chicago winters before and we didn't have to hide under our beds every time it got a little chilly. 🌫️

I do hope everyone takes these precautions seriously, though. Hypothermia is no joke, and the wind chill factor is gonna be a real concern. Stay warm, Chicago! 💪

Ugh, can u even imagine being stuck indoors all wk? like, I'm all about trying new things & having fun, but this cold snap is NO JOKE 🤣😒. I swear, I just got my summer vibes from last yr & now I'm back to bundling up in thermals... Anyone have any fave indoor activities that'll keep me entertained? 💡📚💻

ugh, chicago is gonna be FREEZING this week 🥶😓 anyone else having to shovel snow next tue? anyway, just a thought, but have u seen the temps forecasted for chicago vs nyc? nyc's temps are only expected to drop into the teens, while chicago's are supposed to be like -20°C... talk about harsh weather conditions! 🤯 btw, did u know that according to data from the national weather service, the average temperature in chicago during january is around 3.4°c? so this cold snap isn't exactly unexpected 😅

Ugh, winter's back 🥶! Chicago's gonna freeze its butt off this week, I'm not surprised. You gotta respect the weather forecast, people. Stay inside as much as possible, unless you gotta go out, of course. Wear all those layers like they're gonna keep you alive 😂. And don't even think about venturing out on Wednesday with that icy wind and potential snowdrifts. Just not worth it. On the bright side, Wednesday might be pretty mild for a hot second, but don't get your hopes up 🤷‍♂️. The real cold snap is coming on Friday... brrr! ❄️

Ugh, can't believe we have to deal with this again 🤣. Chicago winters are literally the worst, you know? One day it's snowy, the next it's freezing... like, how do they even plan these things? Anyway, I guess it's good that they're warning us about the hazardous travel conditions... if only people would listen and not drive around like maniacs on Wednesday 😒. And omg, multiple layers of loose-fitting clothing? Who comes up with this stuff? Just wear a parka or something already! 🤷‍♀️. On the bright side, I guess it's nice to have something to stay indoors about besides cat videos and Netflix 📺...

Ugh I'm like so done with this winter thing! ❄️♂️ Chicago is gonna be SO cold by Friday 😩 and I just wanna stay in bed all day. But seriously, the weather forecast is looking pretty bad. 1-2 inches of snow on Tuesday night? That's no joke 🌨️! And then the subzero temps hit on Thursday... brrr 😓. At least they're warning us about it, so we can prepare and stay safe indoors 🏠. Can't wait for that warm spot in the 20s on Wednesday, though ☀️... it's gonna feel like a mini-vacation from all this cold!

Ugh, cold snaps are the WORST 🔥❄️! Can't believe they're advising people to stay indoors like they're going into some kind of polar vortex-induced coma 😴. I get it, temps are gonna drop, but do we really need to be holed up for 2 days straight? 😒

On the bright side, at least Wednesday might be slightly tolerable ☀️... until that deep freeze hits on Thursday, obvs 🤯. Can't wait to see those temps plummet below zero - just what I needed, more excuses to cozy up with a hot cuppa and a good book 📖.

Snow's always a pain, but at least it's not like we're gonna break some kind of record for most snowfall ever 🌨️... still, gotta be careful out there. Gusty winds? Drifting snow? No thanks 😒.

Ugh I hate days like this 🤒🌫️... who needs that kinda cold? Can't we just have a warm and sunny day for once?! And of course it's Chicago, the city is already miserable enough as it is 😓. Like, can't they just give us some proper winter gear or something? I swear if I have to wear all these layers just to go outside I'm gonna freeze my butt off 💁‍♀️😂. And don't even get me started on the snow, like who even likes shoveling snow?! 🤦‍♀️ Can we just stay inside and binge-watch Netflix or something?

🌨️ honestly think its kinda overkill how much they're warning about this cold snap... people seem to get really worked up when there's a chance of frost 😂 like chillin' at home in some layers is basically the definition of adulting 🤷‍♂️. and dont even get me started on bundling up in 5 layers 👕🧥, what happened to just wearing decent clothes? 😒

ugh dont believe me or not i know its cold in chicago this time of year but like seriously residents gotta stay indoors lol meanwhile people are all "oh noooo" about the weather 🤣 meanwhile the real concern is ppl who dont prep for winter r gonna be stuck w/ frozen fingers and toes ❄️ and trust me id rather be cozied up w/ a hot cuppa than venturing out in -20c 🍵

Ugh I hate days like this 🤒😩 my kiddos are stuck inside with no outdoor playtime and it's already driving me crazy 😡 we've got all the warm clothes ready but I'm worried about the wind chill on Friday - it's going to be a long day 🤕 at least the warmth on Wednesday is nice, fingers crossed they enjoy it before the cold sets in ☀️

Ugh, this cold snap is already stressing me out! As a parent, I'm worried about my kids being cooped up indoors with no end in sight. I know it's good advice from the weather guys to stay indoors unless necessary, but it's hard when you have school/work commitments and can't just play hookie 🤦‍♀️. My kid is always asking if they can go outside to play, and I'm like "nope, not today". Anyone else having this problem? 🌡️
