FBI Uncovers Pipe Bomb Plot Targeting US Election Headquarters, Suspect Tied to Election Conspiracy Theories
A suspect in a plot to detonate pipe bombs at high-ranking Democratic and Republican party headquarters in Washington D.C. has confessed to holding onto conspiracy theories surrounding the 2020 general election.
According to sources close to the FBI, Brian Cole, a 30-year-old man, believed in unsubstantiated claims about the 2020 election that have been repeatedly debunked by experts and officials. The nature of these theories is unclear, and investigators are still searching for a motive behind Cole's alleged actions, which included transporting explosive devices.
Cole's suspected targets were the headquarters of both the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Republican National Committee (RNC), with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris being present at the DNC building when one of the devices was discovered on January 6th. The bomb disposal efforts came just hours before a violent insurrection at the US Capitol, largely fueled by false claims about election irregularities.
Criticism has been levied against the FBI for its handling of the situation, particularly after four years of searching for Cole. Former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino sparked controversy last November when he claimed that the agency's investigation had been "a massive cover-up" and suggested possible ties between anti-Trump insiders or an inside job.
Bongino has previously spread misinformation on social media regarding the pipe bomb plot, with one instance where he falsely stated that it was an "inside job".
