Texas woman who threatened judge in Trump criminal case to be sentenced Wednesday

Federal Judge to Impose Sentence on Woman Who Threatened Judge in Trump Case Wednesday

A Houston federal judge, Keith Ellison, will hand down a sentence to Abigail Shry, 45, on Wednesday after she pleaded guilty to making a threatening phone call to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan in August. The call was made just hours after Chutkan was assigned to oversee former President Donald Trump's case for allegedly conspiring to overturn his 2020 election loss.

Shry's voicemail message, obtained by the Justice Department, contained a string of racist and violent threats against Chutkan, as well as Texas Democratic congresswoman, "all Democrats," and the LGBTQ community. She specifically warned that if Trump didn't win re-election in 2024, she would "come to kill" her.

The investigation linked Shry's cell phone number to the threatening call. As part of a plea deal, Shry admitted to making the call and stated that she had no plans to carry out any threats. However, investigators also discovered that she expressed concerns about traveling to Chutkan's city if the congresswoman did so.

Shry faces up to five years in prison for transmitting an interstate threat. Her sentencing comes as a federal judge has been dealing with a rising number of threats against judges this year โ€“ over 560 have been investigated, surpassing all of 2024 and matching 2023 levels.

In May, Shry was briefly held in pretrial detention but was later released on the condition that she not possess firearms or consume alcohol. Judge Ellison will now impose the sentence in Houston.

You can't separate the people from the art of justice... ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿป

The way I see it, if you're going to make threats, at least have the decency to be original. This girl went and used racist slurs - that's just low. And now she's facing up to five years in prison, which is exactly what she deserves. ๐Ÿค

omg did you guys know that pineapple pizza is a thing now ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿคฏ i mean what's next? putting peanut butter and pickles on it? anyway back to Abigail Shry... I think she should get at least 2-3 years in prison, the minimum of 5 years seems kinda light considering how threatening her messages were ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ. and can we talk about the state of judges getting threatened lately? like what's going on? is it just a coincidence or is there something deeper to it ๐Ÿค”

omg u no how disturbing this is ๐Ÿคฏ like a woman threatening a judge and all those hurtful words about ppl from diff communities?? it's just so messed up ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ abigail shry needs some serious help ๐Ÿค• as a student i see how this can affect everyone's safety and trust in our system of justice โš–๏ธ it's not just about the threats, its about ppl being targeted because of who they are or what they believe in ๐ŸŒˆ anyway, i hope judge ellison gives her a fair but tough sentence ๐Ÿคž

OMG, this is like so crazy ๐Ÿคฏ! I'm all about keeping our courts safe and respected, you know? I mean, threats against judges are just not okay at all ๐Ÿ˜ก. It's amazing how one person can spread so much hate and fear, it's just...wow.

And can we talk for a sec? Like, what drives someone to be so violent or hateful? Is it just a case of crazy lady vibes or is there more to it? I'm not saying we shouldn't be concerned about people like Shry, but maybe we should try to understand where she's coming from too?

I mean, it's not okay to threaten anyone, regardless of who they are or what their job is. But at the same time, let's make sure our justice system is handling these cases in a way that makes sense for everyone involved ๐Ÿค.

By the way, have you guys noticed how many threats there are against judges now? Like, it's really starting to add up ๐Ÿšจ. I hope Judge Ellison can help bring some closure and justice to Shry's case soon โฐ.

Ugh, this is just another sad day for our country... ๐Ÿค• I mean, I get it, people are passionate about politics and stuff, but threatening someone's life because of their party affiliation? That's just not cool, you know? ๐Ÿ˜’ And racist threats against the LGBTQ community? No way, that's just low. Abigail Shry thought she was being clever with her "all Democrats" comment, but really she just came off as a crazy person. ๐Ÿคช

I'm all for people exercising their right to free speech and expressing their opinions, but when it comes at the expense of someone else's safety and well-being? Not cool, dude. The fact that we're seeing so many threats against judges this year is just disturbing. I mean, can't we just disagree with each other without resorting to violence or intimidation? ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿค• this is getting outta hand folks, all these threats against judges gotta stop, it's scary for anyone to be targeted like that ๐Ÿšจ. Abigail Shry might think her threats were clever but they only ended up putting her in more hot water, 5 years in prison isn't too harsh considering what she said ๐Ÿ™. I wonder how many other people made similar threats without getting caught or facing consequences ๐Ÿค”.

I donโ€™t usually comment but... this Abigail Shry case is just crazy ๐Ÿคฏ! She threatened a judge and some politicians, then pleads guilty and gets to serve time? Like, what's the point of even having laws if people are gonna break 'em like that? I don't get it. And can we talk about how messed up her comments were? Racist and violent threats against judges and random people is never okay ๐Ÿšซ. It's not worth risking your life or someone else's just to express some opinions. Judges have it tough enough already, dealing with all those threats and stuff... maybe this sentence will be a good lesson for her ๐Ÿ˜•.

๐Ÿค” so like what's up with this lady Abigail Shry? makes a threatening call to judge and then just pleads guilty like it's no big deal? five years is still a bit harsh tho, feels like she's getting off easy considering all the hate she was spewing. don't get me wrong, threats against judges are super serious, but at least she ain't done anything physical yet... fingers crossed the sentence will be fair ๐Ÿคž

I don't get why people like her can't just chill out ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ™„. Making threatening calls over the phone is super irresponsible and can put a lot of lives at risk, you know? I mean, back in my day, we didn't think it was okay to call someone a bad name or make threats and then act all innocent when caught ๐Ÿšซ. The fact that she expressed concerns about traveling to Chutkan's city if the congresswoman came there is just plain creepy ๐Ÿ˜ณ.

It's crazy how many people are making these kind of threats against judges this year - over 560, man! ๐Ÿคฏ That's like, what, a whole bunch? I get that Trump can be super divisive and all, but come on, let's keep the rhetoric civil, you know? ๐Ÿ˜Š

This is a really concerning case ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, Abigail Shry's threats were super severe and targeted some vulnerable groups like the LGBTQ community ๐ŸŒˆ. You can't just threaten someone with violence because you're upset about politics or something that doesn't affect you directly. And what's even crazier is that she was aware of the risks of her actions - she'd already been released from pretrial detention after showing no intention to follow through on those threats.

It's not like Shry was just making a joke or expressing her opinion; these were actual, specific threats against people's lives. I'm glad the Justice Department took this case seriously and got her to plead guilty. Now we'll see what kind of sentence Judge Ellison hands down ๐Ÿค”. It's also interesting that there are so many threats against judges this year - it's like people think they can just harass them online or in person without consequences ๐Ÿ˜ฌ.
