The $500 billion beauty industry’s ‘green’ ambitions are a patchwork at best. And they’re falling short | CNN

The global beauty industry's quest for sustainability has yielded mixed results, with many companies touting environmental credentials that are difficult to verify. According to the British Beauty Council, 95% of plastic packaging in the cosmetics industry is thrown away and most is not recycled.

In an effort to woo eco-conscious consumers, beauty brands have set ambitious targets to reduce their use of single-use plastics and virgin materials. However, these goals often fall short due to inconsistencies in implementation and a lack of standardized regulations.

The biggest hurdle facing the industry is plastic packaging, which accounts for about 67% of its overall packaging volume. While some companies are making progress towards using post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic, this material is expensive and difficult to source, leading to competition with virgin plastics.

Beauty retailers also play a crucial role in promoting sustainability, but many struggle to set standards for the brands they sell. The absence of government regulations and global standards on sustainability practices has left it up to companies and consumers to drive change through "market leadership."

Some experts argue that the industry's reliance on voluntary certifications like B Corp is insufficient, as only a small percentage of certified brands have made significant changes in their operations. Instead, they advocate for more comprehensive regulations and standards to ensure that sustainability claims are substantiated.

The gap between developed and developing countries also poses a challenge, with some countries having stricter waste management laws than others. For example, the EU has banned over 2,495 substances from use in cosmetic products, but their counterparts in the US have only identified 11 such substances.

Ultimately, the beauty industry's transition towards sustainability will depend on continued collective advocacy and initiative, as well as more effective regulations to hold companies accountable for their environmental claims.

I'm really worried about the state of plastic packaging in the cosmetics industry 🤯. I mean, 95% of it is just thrown away and most of it isn't even recycled? That's crazy! 🚮 And what really gets me is that some companies are claiming to be super eco-friendly when they're actually just making a pretty face 💄. It's like they're not being transparent about their sourcing or production methods at all.

I think the industry needs to step up its game and create more standardized regulations, especially since most countries don't have the same standards in place 🌎. And it's not just about the big brands, either - I think beauty retailers need to do more to hold those companies accountable too ⚖️. We need to see some real change here, like mandatory recycling programs or taxes on single-use plastics 💸.

It's also weird that developed countries are way ahead of developing ones when it comes to waste management 🤷‍♀️. I mean, we need to be supporting those countries and helping them develop their own sustainability standards too 🌟.

I'm so confused about all this 🤔. I mean, we're always being told that eco-friendly is the way to go, but it seems like the beauty industry is having a hard time living up to its own promises 💸. Like, 95% of plastic packaging in cosmetics isn't even recycled? That's crazy! 🙅‍♀️ And don't even get me started on how expensive PCR plastic is... it just doesn't make sense to me 😒.

I think what really gets my goat is that big companies are trying to save face by claiming they're more eco-friendly than they actually are 🤥. I wish there were some real standards or regulations in place, like the EU has for those 2,495 substances banned from use in cosmetics... it's just not fair on consumers who don't know what's going into their products 💔.

I guess we'll just have to keep nagging these companies and advocating for change 🗣️ until they start living up to their sustainability promises. It's frustrating, but I'm willing to fight for the planet 🌎!

I'm so frustrated with the whole situation! I mean, we're still using plastic packaging in school's cafeteria 🤯 it's crazy! But seriously, if beauty brands are struggling to make changes, how can we expect them to set a good example? I think the government needs to step in and create some standardized regulations for sustainability. It's not like we don't know what's going on - companies are already making these claims about being eco-friendly 🌱 but it's just lip service if they're not following through.

Interesting 🤔 💚 Plastic packaging is like the biggest elephant in the room! I mean, you have all these companies talking about being eco-friendly but it's hard to know what's true when most of that plastic just ends up in landfills or oceans... and yeah, PCR plastic is expensive, that's a major hurdle! 🤯 I think we need more standardized regulations and government oversight to make sure companies are really making changes, not just slapping a logo on their packaging and calling it a day 😒

I think its crazy that we're still using so much single-use plastics in the beauty industry... I mean, like 95% of plastic packaging is thrown away and most isn't even recycled 🤯. It's all about marketing and making eco-friendly sound cool rather than actually changing practices. We need some solid regulations to make companies accountable for their claims and not just use "market leadership" as a cop-out 💁‍♀️. And whats with the gap between developed and developing countries? Some countries have way stricter waste management laws than others, it's like we can't even agree on what sustainability looks like 🤷‍♀️

🌎 Interesting, I mean think about it, we're still using plastic packaging that's basically useless after one use... like what's the point? 🤯 Companies are trying, but it's hard to verify what they say they're doing. It would be cool if governments could step in and set some real standards for sustainability. Like, let's make it easy for companies to switch to eco-friendly materials instead of having to figure out how to do it on their own. 💡

🤔 I mean, it's crazy how much plastic packaging there is in the cosmetics industry! 67% of it being single-use plastics is just wild 🌪️. And you're right, most of that stuff isn't even recycled 📦. I've been looking at some stats on this, and did you know that only about 30% of PCR plastic is actually recyclable? 💔 It's like the industry is trying to make it sound better than it really is.

And don't even get me started on the certifications 🤷‍♀️. B Corp and all that jazz... yeah, sure, some companies are making an effort, but it's not enough 🚫. We need real regulations and standards here! 📜 I've been seeing these charts online showing how many companies claim to be sustainable but really aren't 📊. It's like, we need more transparency and accountability in this industry.

And have you seen the stats on waste management laws between developed and developing countries? 🤯 The US is way behind when it comes to regulating substances in cosmetics 👀. It's time for a change! 💪 We need to keep pushing for sustainability and holding companies accountable for their claims 💬.

I think its kinda cool that the beauty industry is trying to go green 🌿💚. I mean, we all know the damage plastics can do to our planet, so its awesome that they're making an effort to reduce single-use plastics and use more eco-friendly materials.

But, like, the fact that 95% of their plastic packaging isn't even getting recycled is kinda concerning 😕. And it makes sense that post-consumer recycled plastic is hard to source because of cost 🤑. Still, I think its great that some companies are making progress and setting standards for sustainability.

Imo, we need more regulations and standards in place so that the industry can be held accountable for their claims 💯. And its true that countries with stricter waste management laws are having a bigger impact than those without 🌎. Still, I think the fact that consumers are demanding more sustainable products is driving change and pushing companies to do better 🔄.

Let's keep spreading awareness and supporting companies that prioritize sustainability, even if it means paying a bit more for our fave beauty products 💸👍

🌎💚 I think it's crazy how some beauty brands are trying to go green but still using all that single-use plastic packaging... like, what even is the point of having an eco-friendly label if you're just gonna throw away 95% of it? 🤷‍♀️ We need stricter regulations and more standards in place so we can trust that these companies are actually doing something about their environmental impact. And can't the retailers set some kinda industry-wide standard or something? 📦💸 It's not like they're just gonna let the companies do whatever they want... 🙄

I'm so frustrated with these beauty brands trying to pass off eco-friendly packaging as legit 🤦‍♀️. I mean, 95% of their plastic is just thrown away? That's crazy! 😱 And don't even get me started on the fact that they're not making it easy for consumers to tell what's actually recyclable and what's not... it's like, come on guys, make it simple 🙄. We need stricter regulations and standards in place so we can trust that these brands are being transparent about their sustainability efforts 💯. And I know some of these countries have way better waste management laws than others, but that shouldn't be a barrier for companies to innovate and improve 🤝. It's time for the beauty industry to step up its game and make some real changes 🔄.

💡 I'm so over how all these brands are jumping on the sustainable bandwagon without actually showing us what they're doing behind closed doors 🤔. Like, 95% of plastic packaging being thrown away and not recycled is still a huge problem... it's just that easy to fix 🙄. We need more transparency and regulation, for real this time ⚖️. I'm all for eco-friendly practices, but if we can't even trust what companies are saying about their sustainability efforts, then what's the point? 😐

I don't think the beauty industry is doing enough to address plastic waste... they're just slapping a green logo on their packaging without actually changing anything 🤔. And it's not just about the companies themselves, it's also about the retailers and consumers who are buying into it. If we want real change, we need stricter regulations and more transparency. I mean, who really knows what's in those products or how they're sourced? The whole thing feels like a marketing ploy to us, rather than a genuine effort to reduce waste 💸.

I'm so frustrated with the lack of transparency in the beauty industry right now 🙄💔. They're always talking about being eco-friendly, but it's like they think we're all just going to take them at their word without actually checking what's going on behind the scenes. And don't even get me started on how expensive post-consumer recycled plastic is - that's just not sustainable. We need some real regulation here, you know? Not just these voluntary certifications that are basically meaningless. It's like they're trying to greenwash their way out of actually making a change 🌿💪.

Ugh, can't believe how misleading these eco-friendly brands are 🙄... I mean, they put up this perfect Instagram feed of recyclable packaging and suddenly we're all supposed to believe they're doing some serious sustainability work when in reality most of that plastic is just ending up in the trash anyway.

And don't even get me started on how hard it is to fact-check these claims. Like, what's the point of having some arbitrary percentage like 95% of plastic packaging being thrown away if we can't even trust that number? It's all so shady 🤑.

🌿💄 I think it's super frustrating when brands just slap a "eco-friendly" label on themselves without actually putting in the work to make real changes 🤦‍♀️. Like, 95% of plastic packaging isn't being recycled? That's wild! 💥 We need more standards and regulations in place to hold companies accountable for their environmental claims. It's all about market leadership, but what happens when that doesn't translate into action? 😩

it's crazy how eco-friendly beauty brands are all about it one day and still using plastic packaging the next lol 💁‍♀️🌎 like, can't we just standardize our sustainability goals already? 🤯 a lot of these brands are talking the talk but not walking the walk, you know? 💔 i mean, PCR plastic might be expensive and hard to source, but it's better than using virgin plastics. 🚮💪 and yeah, government regulations would be a huge help here. it's all about holding companies accountable for their environmental claims, right? 📊👍

I totally get why eco-conscious consumers are skeptical about the sustainability claims made by beauty brands... I mean, have you seen those plastic packaging stats? 95% of it is just thrown away 🤯 And it's even harder when there's no standardization in place. I think we need to see more concrete actions from companies and governments alike to really make a difference.

I'm also a bit worried about the reliance on voluntary certifications like B Corp - it feels like they're not doing enough to ensure that actual change is happening 🤷‍♀️ And what's up with the gap between developed and developing countries? It's just not fair that some places have way stricter waste management laws than others.

I think we need a more balanced approach here - let's encourage market leadership, but also push for more comprehensive regulations to hold companies accountable. And can we please, for the love of all things green, find ways to make PCR plastic more accessible and affordable? 💚

🤔 I'm so frustrated with the beauty industry's greenwashing efforts! They're always like "oh look, we're going eco-friendly!" but then you find out that most of these products are still made from single-use plastics or virgin materials 🚮💄. And don't even get me started on how hard it is to verify their sustainability claims - it feels like they're just making stuff up 💁‍♀️.

As a parent, I want to know that the products my kids are using are safe and not harming the planet 🌎. But the lack of regulations and standardized standards makes it so hard for me to trust any brand 🤷‍♀️. And have you seen the difference in waste management laws between the EU and the US? It's like they're speaking different languages 📚.

I think we need more than just voluntary certifications - we need real change that holds companies accountable for their actions 💪. We need better regulations, stricter standards, and more transparency 💯. Anything less is just greenwashing 🌿.

it seems like the beauty industry is trying its best to be eco-friendly but it's just not easy 🤔. they're making some changes but it's hard to know if it's really working because there's no clear standards or rules in place 💡. and honestly, I'm a bit confused by all the different certifications and labels that companies use to claim they're sustainable - like what even is B Corp? 🤷‍♀️ anyway, i think more regulations would be helpful so we can trust the brands we buy from 💯
