The best theatre to stream this month: the rollicking return of One Man, Two Guvnors

This month, theatre fans have several exciting options to choose from when it comes to streaming performances globally. One Man, Two Guvnors, Richard Bean's rollicking farce that brought James Corden his big break, returns to screens on January 13th at National Theatre at Home. The film of the show, which was adapted by Nicholas Hytner, reached a massive audience of over two million during the first lockdown in 2020 and is sure to delight with its wacky humor and charming performances.

For those who prefer something more high-brow, there's an opportunity to experience a classic ballet in Les Patineurs. This enchanting 2010 recording by Frederick Ashton features an elite squad of Royal Ballet dancers conjuring up an afternoon on a frozen pond. The production is available from the Royal Ballet and Opera Stream.

On BBCiPlayer, fans of musicals can enjoy Big Night of Musicals hosted by Jason Manford in Manchester. With Carrie Hope Fletcher taking centre stage as Calamity Jane, Marisha Wallace playing Sally Bowles in Cabaret, Billy Porter, Layton Williams, and Ruthie Henshall among others performing, it promises to be a night to remember.

Breaking Bach offers a unique take on the Baroque period with a collaboration between choreographer Kim Brandstrup and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. The film charts the journey of this innovative project, which saw breakdancing become a key part of introducing young audiences to JS Bach's work.

Much Ado About Nothing receives a new production with additional scenes from feminist playwright Erin Shields that give Hero greater agency and depth. This 2023 Stratford festival performance is available on Stratfest@Home, offering viewers an added layer of emotional resonance to the classic comedy.

Next to Normal, a Pulitzer Prize-winning musical about mental illness, has been adapted for National Theatre at Home, offering a searing production by Michael Longhurst that was well worth the wait when it premiered in London's West End in 2023.

I'm not sure how many times we need to watch adaptations of old shows. Like, isn't Next to Normal just going to be Next to Normal? 🤔 I mean, don't get me wrong, Michael Longhurst is a great director and all, but do we really need to see it again on the National Theatre at Home? And what's up with the addition of extra scenes from Erin Shields? Is that really necessary? I just want to know if the original material was already doing enough for Hero. Can someone provide some context on why these changes were made? 💡

just saw this and im super stoked for the theatre performances 🤩 got to check out the film of one man two guvnors cant wait for january 13th 📺 big night of musicals with jason manford hosting looks like a party 💃🕺

I don’t usually comment but I think its wild how much theatre content is going to be available online this month 🤯. I mean, you can watch everything from a classic ballet to musicals and even a bunch of different productions of Much Ado About Nothing - it's like a theatre festival or something! I've been meaning to check out Big Night of Musicals on BBCiPlayer though, all those big names performing is pretty tempting 🎭. And for people who don't usually watch ballet, Les Patineurs looks super cool and relaxing 🌞. On the other hand, Next to Normal sounds really intense and I can see why it was a hit with audiences when it premiered...

I'm so stoked to see all these awesome theatre and ballet performances going live on streaming platforms! 🎉 It's amazing how far we've come with technology, making art accessible to everyone around the world. I mean, who needs a physical theatre when you can experience it from the comfort of your own home? 💻 The new production of Much Ado About Nothing sounds like a game-changer, adding more depth and agency to Hero's character – that's so cool! 🤩 And Big Night of Musicals with Jason Manford as host is going to be an epic night! I'm thinking of having a movie marathon myself, maybe catching up on some old faves or trying out these new ones. Can't wait to see what everyone else has to say about them too! 👍

OMG, I'm so down for this streaming lineup! 🤩 I've already seen One Man, Two Guvnors on NatT and it's literally my fave farce ever! 😂 The Royal Ballet's Les Patineurs is also giving me those ice skating vibes from La La Land... 💃 I've been meaning to watch Big Night of Musicals for ages, Jason Manford hosting is just the best, right? 🎉 And I'm intrigued by Breaking Bach - who knew breakdancing and JS Bach could be a match made in heaven? 😮 Stratfest's Much Ado About Nothing remake sounds like a must-watch, can't wait to dive into it! 💖 National Theatre at Home's Next to Normal is also high up on my watchlist, mental health awareness is so important 🤗
