The Highgate Vampire review – stranger-than-fiction events make for biting comedy

A Bizarre Tale of Vampire Hunting: The Highgate Vampire Review

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, a bizarre phenomenon took hold in north London's Highgate cemetery, captivating the local community with tales of vampire sightings, exorcisms, and illicit grave excavations. At the height of the speculation, two men, David Farrant and Sean Manchester, found themselves at the center of the hysteria, engaging in a bitter contest to be the first to vanquish the alleged bloodsucker.

In the comedy "The Highgate Vampire," writer-director duo James Demain and Alexander Knott have adapted this wild story into an hour-long show that is equal parts ridiculous and charming. The production takes the form of a lecture, with Farrant (played by James Demain) and Manchester (played by Patrick Sheffield) presenting their competing accounts of the vampire's existence.

As they take turns leading the narrative, each man undercuts the other's authority, creating a sense of tension and unease that belies the comedic tone. The show is full of witty one-liners and humorous observations about the paranormal, but it also manages to tap into the darker side of human nature.

One of the standout elements of "The Highgate Vampire" is its clever use of meta-theatre. The actors' performances are self-aware and playful, with a technician (played by Zöe Grain) who frequently breaks the fourth wall and creates creepy sound effects that add to the show's unease.

While the production is undeniably charming, it could benefit from a bit more bite and scares to contrast with its breezy comedy. Nevertheless, "The Highgate Vampire" is an amusing alternative to traditional Christmas ghost stories, and its stranger-than-fiction roots make it all the more outrageous.

In terms of format, it's worth noting that the show could be even creepier as a promenade, site-specific production. By leveraging the atmospheric setting of Highgate cemetery, the performance could create a truly immersive experience for audiences. As it stands, "The Highgate Vampire" is an enjoyable and entertaining comedy that is sure to delight fans of paranormal fiction and horror enthusiasts alike.

omg u gotta check this out!!! 🤪 i mean its literally a show about vampire hunting in highgate cemetery and its SOOOO weird but also kinda brilliant? the way it pokes fun at all these paranormal claims is genius, and the cast is super talented. zoe grain's character is like the ultimate skeptic lol. but yeah, maybe they could've added some scarier moments to keep us on the edge of our seats. still, its a hilarious alternative to traditional christmas ghost stories and perfect for fans of paranormal fiction 🎃

omg have you guys seen this new show about the highgate vampire? 🤯 i mean its pretty wild how two guys got caught up in all this vampire nonsense back in the day. it sounds like a total farce, but at the same time its kinda dark and twisted...like what happens when people get sucked into their own lies?

i love how they play off each other's egos and try to outdo each other as the "vampire hunter". its like watching two friends who are both totally wrong, but also kinda entertaining. and that technician character is a genius - i love how she breaks the fourth wall and adds all these creepy sound effects...it gives me chills every time!

i agree that it could be even creepier if they did it as a promenade show in highgate cemetery. can you imagine walking through the darkened tombstones with these two guys trying to convince you that vampires are real? 😱 its like the perfect blend of spooky and silly.

I loved this show so much! The way they poked fun at all the vampire hunting nonsense, but still made it super spooky, was genius 💀🎭. I mean, who wouldn't want to watch two guys trying to one-up each other in a battle of wits and bravery? 🤣 The bit with the technician breaking the fourth wall had me giggling out loud 😂. And can we talk about how cool it is that they used Highgate cemetery as a setting? It's like they took all this crazy history and turned it into something actually entertaining 🕷️. My only thing would be, maybe add some more jump scares or creepy moments to really make it pop 😅. Otherwise, 10/10 would watch again 👍

I'm loving how "The Highgate Vampire" takes this wild true story and flips it on its head with that meta-theatre stuff 🤣. The use of the lecture format and those witty one-liners had me giggling out loud, but what really gets me is how they balance the comedic tone with some genuinely creepy moments 😱. As a fan of layout and structure, I think they could take it to the next level if they were to stage it as a promenade performance - can you imagine being surrounded by all that history and atmosphere while they're trying to vanquish the vampire? 🎃️ That would be seriously unsettling!

I think what I love about this show is how it balances humor with some seriously unsettling vibes 🤣... like, you're laughing one minute and then the technician's creepy sound effects kick in and you're like "what's going on? 😱"... and then they just keep playing on the idea of these two guys trying to outdo each other. It's so ridiculous but at the same time it's kinda fascinating how people can get that worked up over a vampire legend 💀... I mean, what even is the appeal of a good old-fashioned vampire story? 🤔

I mean can u imagine? These two guys, Farrant and Manchester, literally fighting over who got to kill the vampire first... 🤣 it's wild! But what I think I love most about this show is how it pokes fun at all the supernatural stuff we love, like vampires and ghost stories. The way they play with each other's egos and try to one-up each other is just genius 💡. And the best part is, you can totally tell when they're not taking themselves seriously... makes it even more hilarious 😂. I think the show is actually really funny and I'd def wanna see it live in Highgate cemetery - can u imagine how spooky-ooky that would be? 🎃

I don’t usually comment but I thought this comedy about vampire hunting was actually pretty funny 🤣. The fact that two guys are trying to one-up each other about killing a vampire makes it feel like a ridiculous argument, you know? And the way they undercut each other's credibility is just hilarious 😂. But at the same time, it’s also kind of dark and unsettling, which I think works well for the show. The meta-theatre aspect was really cool too, I loved how the technician would break the fourth wall and create these creepy sound effects 🎃. Overall, I thought it was a pretty entertaining watch, but maybe not scary enough? Would be even creepier if you could experience it in person at the cemetery 📍

I just watched this thing about vampire hunting in Highgate cemetery and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it 😂🧛‍♂️ The bit where the two guys keep undercutting each other's stories had me laughing out loud, but at the same time, it was kinda unsettling how dark they got towards the end. I love how meta-theatre is used here, it feels like you're right there with the actors, breaking the fourth wall and all that jazz 🎭. The only thing that would've taken it to the next level for me was some proper scares - maybe a few creepy sound effects while we're walking through the cemetery at night? Still, it's definitely worth checking out if you're into paranormal comedies, especially around Christmas time 😊

I'm telling you, this vampire hunting thing was a total wild goose chase 🦇🔥! I mean, who actually believed vampires were real in the first place? It's like they wanted to be part of some crazy conspiracy theory 🤣. And these two guys, Farrant and Manchester, they're just like rival versions of each other, always one-upping each other with their outlandish claims 😂. The show is super entertaining, but I think it's trying too hard to be funny at the expense of being scary 😅. It feels like a "found footage" style doc, but without the whole "it actually happened" vibe 🎥. Still, if you're into that sorta thing, I guess it's worth checking out 👍

OMG u guys! i just watched this super weird show about vampire hunting in highgate cemetery 🤣🦇 and i'm like totally obsessed!!! it's soooo ridiculous but also kinda creepy 😱 the 2 main dudes, david & sean, are like total rivals trying to outdo each other & prove they're the vampire hunter supreme 👊 they have these hilarious exchanges where they try to one-up each other & it's just so funny 🤣 but at the same time, there are some super tense moments that make u think something real is going on 💀 i wish they'd made it a bit spookier tho, idk if i would've been as into it 🎃 anyway, def check this out if u like horror comedy or just want to see something different from the usual xmas ghost stories 👻

omg, i'm totally obsessed with this show 🤪 its like, so cheesy but in the best way possible 😂 i mean who wouldn't want to watch two dudes trying to outdo each other as vampire hunters? it's like something straight out of a campy 80s movie 🎥 and i love how they poke fun at all the ridiculous paranormal stuff that was going on back then. but yeah, a bit more scares would've been nice lol the meta-theatre thing is super clever tho, especially with that technician character 👻 who's always breaking the fourth wall... it's like she's trying to tell us that we're all just a bunch of gullible idiots 😂 anyway, i'm definitely gonna check out this show on promenade, would be so creepy and cool in the cemetery 🌳💀

I gotta say, I was a bit skeptical about this one - I mean, vampires in Highgate cemetery? Sounds like a load of old bones (get it?)... but honestly, the show's got some serious bite (sorry, had to)! The way Demain and Knott adapt the story is pure genius, poking fun at the paranormal genre while still managing to tap into that eerie atmosphere. And let's be real, who wouldn't want to watch a promenade production in Highgate cemetery? It'd be like stepping into a horror movie! But yeah, I think they could've pushed it further to really scare up some chills... still, all in all, it's a pretty solid 7/10 from me 👍

I just watched this show about vampire hunting in Highgate cemetery and I gotta say, it was wild 🤪! The two guys who claim to have seen the vampire are so into it, but also kinda ridiculous, you know? They're like two crazy people fighting over who's got the best story 😂. But what really stood out to me is how funny it is while still being kinda spooky - I mean, there are some super creepy moments that'll make you jump 🎃.

I do wish they'd added a bit more scares, but overall it was a lot of fun 💀. And can we talk about the meta-theatre thing? The actors break the fourth wall and it's just so meta 🔥. I loved how the production used sound effects to make it feel even creepier. Highgate cemetery would be the perfect setting for this show, maybe they should do a promenade version? 🤔

I watched this show & I gotta say its actually kinda funny 😂 how these two dudes went at each other over vampire hunting. The meta-theatre bits were on point, had me laughing out loud 🤣. But at the same time, it felt like they were playing with fire, exploiting these crazy stories for laughs. I mean, is there really no truth to all that? Still, its entertaining, dont get me wrong 👍. Just wish it could've been a bit spookier 😅.

I mean, have you ever stopped to think about what draws us to stories like this? The Highgate Vampire tale is a perfect example of how human curiosity can get the best of us, leading us down a rabbit hole of speculation and hysteria 🕷️. It's fascinating to see how two individuals can become embroiled in such a public spectacle, each trying to outdo the other in a battle for attention and validation.

And then there's the comedy aspect – it's almost as if we're watching a train wreck in slow motion, unable to look away from the absurdity of it all 🤣. But beneath the laughs, I think there's something more at play here. We're tapping into our deep-seated fears and desires, our primal need for connection and understanding.

The show's use of meta-theatre is genius – by acknowledging its own artificial nature, it pokes fun at the very notion of "truth" and "reality." It's a clever subversion of our expectations, leaving us wondering what's real and what's just a product of our collective imagination 🤔.

Ultimately, The Highgate Vampire is more than just a silly comedy – it's a thought-provoking exploration of human psychology, our capacity for absurdity, and the blurred lines between reality and fantasy 💭.

omg I was literally just thinking about how weird it's cool how london can go from being all proper & stuff to having vampire hunters running around 🤣, I mean who needs a spooky season when you have a cemetery with actual mystery?

anyway, the show sounds like so much fun - I love that it's all self-aware and playful 😜, kinda like how we're all just faking being grown-ups on social media. I'm not sure if they could've squeezed in some more scares though...I mean, I get the comedy thing but a good jump scare never hurts 🎃. and omg a promenade production would be everything - can you even imagine walking through highgate cemetery with creepy sound effects and actors lurking around every corner? 😱
