The pub that changed me: 'As soon as I got behind the bar, I panicked'

Behind the Bar, but Not Quite There: One Man's Pub Nightmare

When 25-year-old Simon Hattenstone landed his dream job at The Friendship Inn in Prestwich, he thought he was exactly where he belonged – surrounded by pints of Guinness and the familiar chatter of pub patrons. His best friend Ned had secured him a spot behind the bar, but it quickly became apparent that this was not going to be an easy gig.

As Simon donned his apron and prepared for his first shift, he found himself paralyzed with anxiety. The seemingly innocuous shape of the bar, which resembled a ship's bow, proved to be a recipe for disaster. Every time he moved in one direction, customers began calling out from the other side, making it impossible for him to remember their names or recall the drinks they had ordered.

Panic set in as Simon frantically tried to serve his first customers, but everything that could go wrong did. He poured beer into glasses meant for red wine, mixed up his beers, and even broke a glass (or two). The pub patrons' faces twisted into grotesque caricatures, as if they were witnessing some kind of horror movie.

As the chaos reached its peak, Simon's legs began to buckle beneath him. He felt like he was going to pass out from sheer exhaustion and embarrassment. His manager, sensing his distress, intervened with a merciful yet firm message: it was time for Simon to leave.

The aftermath was just as painful as the ordeal itself. Unable to face his parents or his best friend Ned, Simon retreated into a shell of shame and humiliation. But 40 years on, he's finally begun to open up about his pub-hopping nightmare to fellow bartenders, using a humorous phrase coined by one of them: "aversion therapy."

Simon's story serves as a reminder that even the most seemingly simple profession can be intimidating for those who are new to it. And while we may not all end up in pub drama like Simon did, we've all been there – if only occasionally wondering how someone else manages to pour pints with such ease behind the bar.

omg, i feel like simon 😩🍺 his situation sounds SO relatable - have you ever had a day where everything just goes wrong and you're just trying not to make a total fool of yourself? 🤦‍♂️ bartending can't be easy, especially for a newbie. i mean, who hasn't spilled something on the job or had a customer get their order mixed up 🍹😳 but at least simon's story has a happy ending... sorta 😅

🤯 You know what's crazy? We're all just trying to figure things out as we go along. I mean, who hasn't spilled something at work or messed up a presentation? It's like, we're all in this together, and everyone has their own aversion therapy moment (btw, love that phrase!) 🤣

Simon's story is actually kinda beautiful in its own way. He was so caught up in his anxiety that he literally couldn't even serve drinks, but instead of giving up, he found a way to laugh about it with the help of his fellow bartenders. And let's be real, we've all had those moments where we're like, "how do they do this?" 🤔 But honestly, most people just pretend to know what they're doing until someone gives them feedback (or in Simon's case, gets benched 😂).

So the moral of the story is: don't be too hard on yourself when things go wrong. We all have our own struggles, and it's okay to not have it all together. Sometimes we just need a little bit of "aversion therapy" to laugh about ourselves and move forward 💖

😔 I feel so bad for that guy Simon... 25 and already having a total meltdown behind the bar 🤯. It's like he just wasn't cut out for it, but you can't blame him for feeling overwhelmed 😓. And poor Ned, his best friend, just trying to help him out... I'd be super embarrassed too if I were in his shoes 🤦‍♀️. Aversion therapy? 😂 yeah, that sounds like a real thing now! But seriously, it's great that he's speaking out about it and using humor to cope with the shame 💪. Let's all just say we've been there too, right? 😅

Ugh, this pub nightmare is like, totally relatable though 😂... I mean, who hasn't had one of those first days where everything just goes haywire? It's like my old animation critique blog days - I'd be so nervous about tackling a new film, and I'd end up messing it up 🤦‍♂️. But you know what? Even the most epic failures can turn into funny stories that make us go "haha, yeah, I've been there too" 😆.

Simon's experience just goes to show that even when things don't go as planned (and they won't always go as planned), we can learn from our mistakes and come out stronger on the other side 💪. And let's be real, aversion therapy is like, totally legit now 🤣... I mean, who needs actual therapy when you've got a good laugh at your own expense? 😂

lol imagine having to deal with a ship-shaped bar 🚢😂 and it just being too much for you?! that's wild! i feel bad for simon tho, i would've been totally freaking out if i was in his shoes 😂 but omg aversion therapy is literally the best phrase ever lol. anyway, i think it's so true that bartending can be super intimidating especially when it comes to remembering orders and dealing with tricky customers 🤯 it just goes to show that even people who seem like they're doing what they love are still human and can have their own struggles 😊

I feel so bad for Simon 😊. I mean, can you imagine starting a new job and just freezing up? 🤯 It's like his brain just went blank and he couldn't remember even the simplest things. And to make matters worse, it was in front of all those people... I would've been totally freaked out too! 😂 But you know what? It takes a lot of guts for him to talk about it now and share his experience with others. Maybe we can all learn from his story and be more understanding towards people who might be struggling 🤗.

🤯 I feel you, dude! Pub work can be super overwhelming, especially when you're new to it. I mean, 25 and already having a breakdown... that's just crazy 😅. But at the same time, I gotta admire Simon for owning up to his mistakes and sharing his story with others. Maybe he's getting some form of "pub therapy" now 🍺💆‍♂️.

OMG you feel me when u read about simon's pub nightmare 😂🍺 i mean who wouldn't get anxious working behind a bar esp w/ a ship bow thingy 🤣 sounds like he had major fumble fingers that 1st day 🙈 but it's actually kinda relatable, u know? like, who hasn't spilled a drink or two (or ten) in their time? 🍹 anyway, simon took the hard route & talked about his struggles, good on him for being open about it 💪 hope he's doing better now 😊

😂🍺🤦‍♂️ I feel so bad for Simons 🤕! He just wanted to do a good job but everything went wrong 🚮💔. Poor guy must've been so stressed out 😩. Pub life can be tough, especially when you're new to it 📚. But you know what? We've all had those moments where we feel like total fools 😂. And honestly, who hasn't spilled a drink or two (or ten)? 🤣 It's just part of the job, right? 👍💪

OMG, I remember when pubs were all about cozy vibes and friendly faces 🍺👥, you know? Like, your favorite pub would be this warm and welcoming spot where everyone knew each other's names... okay, maybe not always 😂. Anyway, Simon's story is like, totally relatable, right? I mean, who hasn't had a bad day behind the bar or just felt super nervous in a new job? 🤔 It's like, you're trying to make drinks and serve people, but everything just goes wrong... and it's all so frustrating! 😩

But you know what's even more cringeworthy than Simon's mistakes? Watching old YouTube videos of bartending tutorials with those super annoying instructors who just stand there looking smug 🙄. Ugh, the memories are real, fam! 😂

I feel so bad for this guy 🤕... Like, I get it, working in a pub can be super high pressure, but 40 years on and still talking about it? That's some intense anxiety right there 😬. I've been to enough pubs myself where I felt like I was going to spit my drink out or something if the bartender messed up for one second.

But at the same time, I can kinda relate... Like, have you ever tried to order a simple coffee and it takes forever? Or when you're trying to get stuff done online and everything just freezes? Yeah, that's some aversion therapy right there 😂. Maybe Simon should try writing about his experiences instead of, like, avoiding his friends and family?

omg i feel u simon 🤣 i used to be a total mess behind the bar when i was 19 i spilled like 5 beers in one night and had to deal with some pretty rough customers lol my manager at the time was super nice but also kinda ruthless she told me if i couldn't handle it then i shouldn't work there

i think the biggest challenge is just getting used to being around people all day and trying to remember everyone's orders and whatnot it sounds like simon had a really tough first shift idk how he coped with it but at least he's got his sense of humor about it now 🤪
