The Rise of 'Unc': Is This Gen Alpha's Way of Saying "OK Boomer"?

Gen Alpha, born between 2010 and 2025, is at it again – this time using the internet slang term "unc" to address anyone older than them. The phrase has taken off on TikTok and other social media platforms, with 5.9 million monthly searches and a whopping 74% increase in searches for its meaning.

The origins of "unc" can be traced back to a viral TikTok video in July where creator Riley Hardwick said he had just found out he was over the hill ("chopped") and also "unc." Hardwick's use of the term has since been amplified by A-listers like Sabrina Carpenter and Timothée Chalamet, who have referred to producers and themselves as "unc."

So, what does it mean? In essence, "unc" is a colloquialism that signifies someone older than the speaker, often with a playful or tongue-in-cheek tone. It's not necessarily derogatory, but rather a way of showing respect or familiarity.

However, some critics argue that gen Alpha has culturally appropriated the term, which has been used in African American Vernacular English and other cultures for years to address older adults respectfully. This raises questions about the ownership and cultural context of internet slang terms.

As one creator pointed out on social media, "If you need to ask what 'unc' means, you are one." The key takeaway is that using "unc" in a respectful manner requires understanding its nuances and avoiding cultural appropriation.

In short, gen Alpha's use of "unc" may not be the same as saying "OK Boomer," but it shares some similarities. As with any internet slang term, it's essential to approach it with sensitivity and respect for its origins and cultural context.

I'm low-key confused about this whole "unc" thing 🤔. Like, I get that gen alpha is trying to be relatable on the internet but at the same time, they're basically reusing a term from other cultures without proper understanding or respect. It's like, they can't even bother to learn how to use TikTok slang properly lol 🚀. And honestly, if you need someone to explain what "unc" means, I'm not sure it's worth using in the first place 🤷‍♀️. Can't we just come up with some new terms that don't involve appropriating other people's cultures? 💁‍♀️

😂 I think this is so relatable... Gen Alpha growing up and already trying to navigate online culture 🤯. I mean, I'm not old or anything, but I remember when "OK Boomer" was all the rage - it's cool that younger generations are finding their own ways of expressing themselves, even if they might seem similar. And I love how one creator said we should just ask what something means if we're not sure 😂. It's all about being respectful and aware of where words come from, right? The thing is, internet slang is moving so fast - it's like we can't keep up! 🚀

I'm low-key concerned about this whole 'unc' thing... 🤔 It's like Gen Alpha is trying to sound cool by using a term that's already got a rich history in other cultures. I mean, I get what they're trying to do - show respect or familiarity with older folks - but it feels like they're co-opting something that's not their own.

And let's be real, if you need to ask what 'unc' means, you are one 😂. It's a term that's been used in AAVE and other cultures for ages, so Gen Alpha needs to educate themselves on its history and context before they can just throw it around like it's their own.

I'm not here to bash Gen Alpha or say they're being "out of touch" 🙅‍♂️. But as someone who's been around the internet a bit, I think we need to be more thoughtful about how we use language and slang. It's all about respect and understanding the nuances of different cultures and histories. 👍

I'm like totally confused by this whole thing 🤯... I mean, I've seen people use that "unc" thing on TikTok before, but I thought it was just a funny meme or something 😂... But now that I think about it, I remember when "OK Boomer" first came out (lol, what a blast from the past 🎉)... and how some people were all like "this is so extra" (idk, was that 2019? 🤔)... Anyway, I guess gen Alpha's using "unc" to troll their parents or whatever, but isn't it weird that they're copying someone else's slang term without even acknowledging its origins? 🤷‍♂️... Guess you gotta keep up with the times, right? 🔥

idk what to think about this whole "unc" thing 😐 I mean on one hand, it's kinda cool that they're using a phrase from other cultures and making it their own. But at the same time, i can see how it might be seen as cultural appropriation? 🤔 like riley hardwick said in his tiktok vid, if he had just been like "you know what i'm saying?" instead of using that word... anywayz, i guess the point is to be mindful and not use something without understanding where it comes from ❤️

I feel like this whole thing reminds me of when I was a kid and we used to call our grandparents "old" (lol). It was always funny how we'd tease them about being old, but then they'd just smile and say, "oh, you're so young these days." 🤣

But seriously, I get why the older generation might feel like their internet slang is getting co-opted. My aunt used to make the best jokes about her kids (my cousins) being digital natives, like how they were too cool for analog anything. It's cute now, but back then it felt like we were trying to out-cool each other. 🤪

I think the key here is just understanding where these terms come from and using them respectfully. Like my mom always says, "use words you'd want people to use about you." If gen Alpha can learn to appreciate the roots of internet slang, they might just find a new way to show respect for their elders... or at least, not offend anyone. 😊

the whole thing is so overhyped 🤣 like, gen alpha is just trying to have fun online and people are already making it out to be this huge cultural thing 🙄 and yeah i get where the criticism comes from but also can't we just let them use a term without trying to psychoanalyze every single instance of it 💁‍♀️ and honestly im kinda loving the fact that timothée chalamet is using it – he's one of the coolest dudes out there 🎬

I'm low-key annoyed that Gen Alpha is just co-opting another phrase without giving proper credit 🤔. Like, if they're gonna use "unc" as a way to address older folks, shouldn't they at least know where it came from? It's not like they can just come out of the woodwork and start using a term that's been around in African American Vernacular English for years without acknowledging its roots 🌎.

And another thing, when you're gonna be 20 or whatever, is it really necessary to make fun of being "over the hill"? Can't we all just have a good laugh about getting older together? 🤷‍♀️ At least with "OK Boomer," there's some nostalgia and irony behind it. With "unc," it just feels like they're trying too hard to be cool 😒.

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is that Gen Alpha needs to get their slang facts straight before they start throwing around terms like "unc" 📚

I've been seeing this trend on TikTok and I gotta say, I'm a bit confused 🤔. I mean, I get that "unc" is just a way of saying old person, but the fact that A-listers like Sabrina Carpenter are using it to address producers and themselves? That's some wild stuff 😂. And yeah, I can see why some people might be worried about cultural appropriation – we don't want our kids appropriating Black Vernacular English without even understanding its context 🤦‍♂️.

But at the same time, if Riley Hardwick used it to describe himself feeling old, that's a pretty lighthearted way of owning up to getting older. I guess what really matters is how we use it – with respect and an understanding of where it comes from 💡. And honestly, if 5.9 million monthly searches isn't enough proof that it's just internet slang, I don't know what is 🤷‍♂️!

I'm low-key obsessed with this Gen Alpha thing 🤣... I mean, who doesn't love a good meme, right? But seriously, using "unc" as a way to address older folks is kinda cool, but also super problematic 😐. Like, I get it, Riley Hardwick's TikTok vid went viral and now it's all over the place, but has Gen Alpha even done their research on where this term comes from?

I'm not saying they're being malicious or anything, but if they're gonna use internet slang that's been around for years in other cultures, shouldn't they be giving credit where credit is due? 🤔 It's like, we get it, you're trying to be relatable and cool, but cultural appropriation is no joke 💁‍♀️. I'm all about being open-minded and embracing new trends, but let's make sure we're doing so with respect and awareness.

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is that Gen Alpha's use of "unc" is a bit of a mixed bag 🤯... part fun, part problematic. Let's just hope they keep it respectful and not ruin the vibe 💖.

I think its kinda funny that Gen Alphas are using "unc" as a way to address olds 🤣 like they're literally saying "you know what, I'm over here too btw". But seriously tho, its weird how something that's been around in some cultures for years just gets hijacked by the internet and becomes a thing again. Like, dont get me wrong, its cool to see Gen Alphas having their own slang, but we gotta respect where it came from 🙏. And btw, if you need to ask what "unc" means, yeah, thats pretty much your generation right there 😂.
