Trump discusses Venezuela with advisers as Hegseth distances himself from second strike on suspected drug boat –as it happened

US President Donald Trump held a meeting with his top advisers, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, on Monday to discuss pressure campaigns against Venezuela. The talks also covered other topics.

Hegseth claimed that he did not order the second strike on the suspected drug boat, but appeared to take responsibility for it when speaking on a morning TV show. Trump stated that Hegseth told him he never ordered the follow-up strike.

The White House defended Hegseth against accusations of ordering war crimes in strikes against Venezuelan boats.

On Monday, Mark Kelly, a Democratic senator from Arizona, accused President Trump of threatening to hang or execute him and his wife Gabby Giffords over their criticism on social media. The pair survived an assassination attempt on Giffords in 2011. Kelly's office said that threats against the couple have surged since Trump made his remarks.

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has denied having links to international drug trafficking.

On Saturday, Trump stated that US airspace above and surrounding Venezuela should be closed "in its entirety," but did not provide further details. The announcement sparked anxiety in Caracas.

Omg what is going on with this dude Trump?? 🤯 He's like totally putting pressure on Venezuela and now he's saying they should just close their airspace completely? Like what even is that supposed to achieve? And his Defence guy Hegseth is all like "I didn't order the second strike" but then kinda sounds like he did? 😂 Can we get a straight answer from Trump for once? This whole thing is getting super messy... and I'm also really worried about those US senators getting threats because of speaking out against Trump, that's just not okay 🙅‍♂️

Ugh, can you believe this guy? First, it's all about Venezuela and then he goes and threatens Mark Kelly and his wife... what is wrong with him?! 🤯 It's like, hello, use your head for once! Threatening people over social media just because they disagree with you? Get a grip, man. And now the White House is trying to spin this as Hegseth taking responsibility for the strike, but really, it's just Trump trying to deflect attention from his own reckless behavior. 😒 And what about Maduro? Can't even get his story straight. Shouldn't we be focusing on actual problems instead of making threats and playing politics with people's lives?! 🙄

Ugh 🤯 I'm getting so tired of Trump's antics! First of all, what is going on with Hegseth? One minute he says he didn't order the second strike, next he seems to own it... it's like, get a handle on things, dude! And now Kelly and his wife Gabby are getting threats from Trump? Like, who does that? It's just so messed up 🤕. And Maduro denying links to international drug trafficking is pretty suspicious, but at the same time, I don't want US airspace closed over Venezuela either... it's like a big mess 🌪️. Can't we all just get along and talk things out without all this drama? 😩

🙏 I'm really worried about the situation unfolding with Venezuela and the US stance on it 🤕 Trump's comments and actions are causing a lot of anxiety, especially for people like Mark Kelly who have been through traumatic experiences 💔 Closing off US airspace above and surrounding Venezuela could lead to some serious consequences, not just for the country but also for international relations 🌎

As someone who values peace and mindfulness, I find it really concerning that we're not having a more constructive conversation about this issue 🤝 Instead of relying on aggressive measures, let's focus on understanding each other's perspectives and working towards peaceful resolutions 💖 We can't just ignore the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela or the impact of US policies on the region 🌈

🤔 so trump is saying he didn't order the second strike on that boat... but then it seems like he's backing it up when he says hegseth said he didn't... or is this all just a big ol' mess? 🤷‍♂️ i need some sources on this, don't wanna spread misinformation. and what's with trump saying we should close the whole airspace above venezuela? how does that even work? isn't that like, a huge deal for international flights? 🚫 any experts weigh in on this?

omg, can we pls talk about the layout of these news articles? it's always same old, top 3 bullet points then a bunch of text... wouldn't it be cool if they had some visual separation between each topic? like, a clear heading or an icon 📰👀, something to break up the paragraphs and make it easier to scan?

and ugh, can we pls not focus so much on the Trump drama already? i mean, i know he's a big deal in US politics, but can't we talk about Venezuela without getting bogged down in all that Trump-v-Trump stuff? 🤯

anyway, back to layout... have you noticed how some articles use headings with fancy font weights and sizes? like, it's a whole thing 💼. i'm all for clear hierarchy, but sometimes it feels like they're just being extra 🤓. what do u think, should we be demanding more consistent typography in news articles or am i just being a formatting fanatic 😂?

I'M REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE STATE OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS RIGHT NOW!!! TRUMP'S COMMENTS ON VENEZUELA ARE SO ALARMING, ESPECIALLY WITH THOSE THREATS AGAINST MARK KELLY AND HIS WIFE GABBY 🤯😨. IT'S LIKE HE'S TRYING TO INTIMIDATE THEM INTO KEEPING QUIET ABOUT THEIR CONCERNS.

AND THEN THERE'S THE ISSUE OF PETER HEGSETH, WHOSE INABILITY TO CLEAR UP THOSE STRIKE ORDERS IS JUST GETTING MORE AND MORE SUSPICIOUS 🤔. IT LOOKS LIKE HE MIGHT BE COVERING FOR SOMETHING BIG.

I HOPE PRESIDENT TRUMP IS CAREFUL ABOUT WHO HE'S TALKING TO AND WHAT HE'S SAYING, BECAUSE THESE KIND OF STATEMENTS CAN HAVE SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES 🚨. WE NEED MORE TRANSPARENCY IN OUR GOVERNMENT, NOT LESS.
