Ukraine-Russia-US hold talks in Abu Dhabi with territory as key issue

Negotiations between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russian officials, and US representatives in Abu Dhabi are marking a crucial step towards ending the nearly four-year-old conflict. The talks centered on territory, with both sides insisting that their demands be met.

Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia must be willing to end the war it started, rather than focusing solely on Ukrainian concessions. He also noted that territorial disputes would be a central issue in the discussions but stressed that "the most important thing is that Russia should be ready to end this war, which it started." The Ukrainian delegation has expressed hope for progress in the talks.

Meanwhile, Russia's position remains unchanged: they demand that the Ukrainian army leave the Donbas region. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia's insistence on yielding all of Donbas – including 20% of Donetsk under Ukrainian control – was a "very important condition."

Russia's delegation at the UAE talks consists mainly of military officials, while Putin's envoy Kirill Dmitriev will hold separate talks with US representative Steve Witkoff on economic issues.

In parallel to these high-level discussions, lower-level talks between US President Donald Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner have taken place. According to Trump, both sides are now willing to reach an agreement. However, Kremlin foreign affairs adviser Yury Ushakov contradicted this by stating that a long-term settlement cannot be expected without resolving the territorial issue.

The conflict has led to devastating consequences for Ukraine, including widespread power outages and civilian casualties due to Russian attacks on energy infrastructure. Despite these ongoing challenges, Zelenskyy's office reported a decrease in violence during the talks.

Representatives from the US and other international organizations will continue monitoring the situation, seeking a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

Omg I'm so hyped for this 🀩!!! It's about time Russia and Ukraine talk things out! I mean, four years of war is just crazy πŸ’₯. Zelenskyy is totally right, Russia needs to be willing to end the war it started, not just asking Ukraine to make concessions πŸ™„. And 20% of Donetsk under Ukrainian control? That's a big ask πŸ˜….

I'm also loving that the US and other orgs are still pushing for a peaceful resolution πŸ’ͺ. It's not gonna be easy, but I think we're finally seeing some progress 🌈. Trump saying both sides are willing to reach an agreement is huge 🀝! We gotta keep our fingers crossed for Ukraine, they've been through so much πŸ˜”.

Lower-level talks with Jared Kushner? That's like, totally a thing now πŸ“Š. I'm not sure what economic issues will be discussed, but I'm down to learn πŸ€“. Let's just hope it all adds up to real progress πŸ’Έ.

I'm not sure about these peace talks, reminds me of that time when the Minsk agreements were made back in 2014... but those didn't exactly work out as planned πŸ˜•. I mean, Russia's still being pretty firm on their demands for Donbas, like it's a non-negotiable thing πŸ€”. Zelenskyy seems to be taking a more diplomatic approach though, hoping that Russia will come around and end the war it started πŸ’₯.

It's all a bit complicated, you know? I mean, the US is still involved in some way, but then there are these separate talks with Jared Kushner... what's the plan here again? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ At least Trump says both sides are willing to reach an agreement, which sounds nice, but we've heard that before 😊.

🀞 I'm super excited about this development - it feels like we might actually be seeing some progress on the Ukraine conflict πŸ•ŠοΈ! The fact that Zelenskyy is pushing for Russia to take responsibility for starting the war instead of making all the concessions is a really bold move πŸ’ͺ. And I love how he's emphasizing the importance of ending the war, rather than getting bogged down in territorial disputes πŸ—ΊοΈ.

I'm also intrigued by the separate talks between Putin's envoy and US rep Steve Witkoff on economic issues - could this be a way to find common ground? 🀝 The fact that both sides are willing to reach an agreement (according to Trump, at least!) is a good sign, but I think we need to keep a close eye on things and not get ahead of ourselves πŸ˜….

One thing that's always bugged me about conflict negotiations - who gets the layout credit? πŸ“ Are there going-to-be separate style guides for peace talks or war scenarios?

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that these talks actually lead to some real progress 🀞... it feels like we've been hearing about ceasefires and negotiations for ages, but this time I think there's something different in the air πŸ’‘. Zelenskyy is right, Russia needs to take responsibility for starting the war - it can't just be all about Ukraine giving up land 🚫. And I'm glad to see lower-level talks happening with Trump and Kushner too... a peaceful resolution would mean so much more than just some high-level words of encouragement πŸ’•. Fingers crossed that we'll start seeing some real change soon 🌟. Maybe, just maybe, this is the breakthrough we've been waiting for πŸ’«.

😊 think it's about time for world leaders to put their differences aside and talk turkey πŸ“. this four-year conflict has been draining both ukraine and russia, not to mention the innocent civilians caught in the middle πŸ™. if zelenskyy is willing to negotiate and russia can back down on some of its demands (like donbas being off-limits), maybe we'll finally see a glimmer of hope for peace 🌟.

ps. you can read more about it here: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63079596 πŸ‘‰

I'm glad to see the talks are happening, but I'm still skeptical about Russia's intentions πŸ€”. They've been saying one thing for years now, but it seems like they're not willing to budge on their demands yet. I mean, 20% of Donetsk under Ukrainian control is a big ask, and I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon πŸ’ͺ. And what about the Donbas region? I'm worried that if Russia gets some of what they want, it'll just lead to more conflict down the line 🚨. The fact that there are lower-level talks with Jared Kushner is interesting, but I'm not sure how much impact those will have πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Still, at least we're seeing some movement from both sides, and that's something 😊.

Man I'm kinda hopeful about these negotiations in Abu Dhabi 🀞... like it's been forever since this war started and we all need some peace πŸ•ŠοΈ. The fact that Zelenskyy is pushing for Russia to take responsibility for starting the war shows he's not afraid to speak truth, I love that πŸ’―. But at the same time, Russia's demands are pretty reasonable I guess, 20% of Donetsk being Ukrainian territory is a big concession πŸ€”. Fingers crossed these talks lead to some real progress πŸ’ͺ... we need it for Ukraine and the whole world 😊.

πŸ˜• I'm kinda skeptical about these negotiations being super effective. Like, don't get me wrong, it's great that everyone is talking and all, but Russia's been saying they want Donbas under their control since day one and now? It's not like Ukraine is gonna just hand over territory to them, you feel? πŸ€” Zelenskyy seems reasonable, I guess, by pointing out that Russia needs to end the war it started, but what about all the civilians caught in the middle of this mess? πŸ’” And those lower-level talks between Trump and Kushner? More like a PR stunt than actual progress, imo. πŸ€‘ Still holding out hope for peace, though! πŸ’–

πŸ•ŠοΈ this is either going to work out or fall apart... both sides gotta be willing to compromise, doesn't matter who started it πŸ€” Russia's gotta be serious about ending the war, not just trying to get what they want πŸ’Έ can we really trust that Putin's all ears for now? 😏

πŸ€” I don't think Russia's position is unreasonable at all. They did start this war after all πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. The fact that Ukraine wants to maintain control over 20% of Donetsk doesn't seem like an outlandish demand. And let's be real, the Donbas region has been a hot mess for years before Putin even got involved πŸ’£. It's not like Ukraine was just peacefully living there πŸ™„. Russia needs some kind of concession to call off their troops, and that's fair 😐. I know it's hard to swallow, but we can't keep blaming one side forever 🀯.
