Chicago-area Restaurants Step Up to Support SNAP Recipients Amid Government Shutdown Relief
In response to the delayed and reduced government assistance for SNAP recipients, several Chicago restaurants have come together to offer free and discounted meals to those in need. As of now, all full benefits are expected to be restored by November 20.
To make ends meet, residents can visit these participating eateries and show their SNAP card to receive a complimentary meal or discount. Some popular spots include B'Gab's Vegan Kitchen at Hyde Park, Canton Regio in Pilsen, and Lou Malnati's in Lawndale.
At the heart of this effort is food assistance for people and families across Chicago. The Trump administration initially reduced SNAP benefits during the government shutdown, leaving many struggling to access essential sustenance. Now, with the government reopened, restaurants are taking it upon themselves to provide support to those affected.
B'Gab's Vegan Kitchen will offer 100 free meals each day from Wednesday to Saturday at Hyde Park. Canton Regio will distribute free roasted chickens every Tuesday. Meanwhile, Harold's Chicken No. 34 is giving away a free quarter dark meat meal every Sunday from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Bronzeville location.
To further alleviate hunger, Kale My Name in Albany Park offers free meals between 3 pm and 5 pm daily. October Cafe provides complimentary meals between 3 pm and 5 pm daily through November. Paulie Gee's has also partnered with a local school district to distribute free kid-sized cheese pizzas to children whose families' SNAP benefits have been frozen.
Other notable locations include Ponce Restaurant, offering 200 free meals on a first-come-first-served basis; R Public House, providing free family-sized take-out meals for those in need; and Soul Food Lounge, which will offer a free lunch every Tuesday from noon to 3 pm.
Beyond Chicago's city limits, suburban restaurants like The Huntley Dairy Mart and JJ Fish & Chicken are also participating in this initiative by offering complimentary meals or discounts to SNAP recipients.
Despite its smaller footprint, Champaign-based restaurant, The Literary, is contributing to the cause with free meals every weekday from 9 am to 3 pm.
