We Bury the Dead review – Daisy Ridley tackles the undead in solid zombie twist

Daisy Ridley Brings Contemplative Grief to a Zombie Twist in 'We Bury the Dead'

In a genre that's often plagued by formulaic, soulless rehashes of the same tired zombie tropes, Zak Hilditch's We Bury the Dead is a refreshingly contemplative take on the undead, thanks largely to Ridley's nuanced portrayal.

The film's premise - a US government blunder unleashes a deadly catastrophe in Tasmania, killing half a million people - sets the stage for Ava (Ridley), whose travelling husband met an untimely demise. Rather than focusing on death tolls or zombie carnage, Hilditch and Ridley opt for a more empathetic approach, exploring the emotional toll of loss and grief on Ava as she navigates the treacherous landscape.

The result is a film that's less concerned with gore and more focused on the human cost of tragedy. While the undead do make an appearance, they're treated as more of a curiosity - the walking dead are a phenomenon worthy of scientific study rather than mindless monsters to be slaughtered.

Ridley brings her signature intensity to Ava, conveying a sense of anguish and desperation that's impossible to ignore. Her performance is aided by a thoughtful script that avoids sentimentality in favor of genuine emotional depth.

Visuals play a key role in bringing the film's themes to life, with Hilditch delivering some genuinely breathtaking shots that capture the beauty of the natural world even as it descends into chaos. The cinematography is often stunning, stretching the budget to make a small film feel like a big one.

While We Bury the Dead may not be the most original take on the zombie genre, its thoughtful approach and Ridley's standout performance make it a solid, if unspectacular, addition to the mix. In a world where zombies are always being reimagined, it's refreshing to see one done with such sensitivity and care.

We Bury the Dead is out now in cinemas, available to rent digitally in the UK, and will be released on February 5th in Australia.

I'm kinda hyped about this new zombie flick "We Bury the Dead" 🎥 but at the same time I'm a bit skeptical 'bout how it's gonna hold up... I mean, we've seen a lot of zombie movies already and they usually follow the same tired formula. But with Daisy Ridley on board, I'm willing to give it a shot 😊. The fact that they're focusing more on Ava's emotional journey than just mindless gore is actually kinda refreshing. And those visuals sound insane! 🤯 It'll be interesting to see how it compares to other zombie movies out there...

I love how Daisy Ridley brings her own emotional pain to this film. I mean, she's already had some iconic roles but this one takes a different approach. She's so good at conveying that sense of desperation and grief, it's hard not to feel like you're right there with her. The way the zombies are just a curiosity in all this, it's like they're just an extra layer of tragedy. I'm kinda surprised more filmmakers don't take this route, but I guess that's why We Bury the Dead feels so refreshing. 💔

lolol, i agree w/ this review tho 🤩, daisy ridley is a beast as always! 💁‍♀️ she brings so much depth & emotion to her characters, it's like u can feel her pain & anger in every scene. 🙏 and the way the film handles the zombie apocalypse thingy is so much more subtle & thoughtful than u usually see in these types of movies 👻💀. the cinematography is stunning too, i loved how they captured the beauty of tasmania even when everything was going to hell 😩. overall, it's a solid addition to the genre, but not like, game changing or anything 🤷‍♀️

I just watched this movie We Bury the Dead and I gotta say its a real emotional rollercoaster 🤯. Daisy Ridley's performance as Ava is insane she brings so much depth to the character and makes you feel every ounce of her pain 😩. The way the film handles the zombie aspect is super refreshing, it's like they took something that could be cheesy and turned it into somethin more thoughtful 💡. I loved how they focused on the human side of things instead of just gore and action, its a breath of fresh air 🌿. Overall I think its a solid addition to the zombie genre and definitely worth watchin' 👍

I'm so hyped for this new movie We Bury the Dead! 🎥👻 Daisy Ridley is amazing as Ava, she brings such depth to her character it's like you can feel her grief radiating from the screen. I love how the film focuses on the human cost of tragedy instead of just zombie carnage, it makes for a really emotional watch. The cinematography is insane 🤯, I mean who doesn't love a good zombie apocalypse set in stunning Tasmania landscapes? 💚 Plus, it's always refreshing to see a female lead in a genre that can sometimes be all about the guys. Can't wait to check it out! 👍

Daisy Ridley absolutely kills it in this flick 🤯 I mean Ava's character is so deep and emotional, she just takes over the whole movie 😭 The way they portray the zombies as more of a scientific phenomenon than mindless monsters is super refreshing, I love how they focus on the human cost of tragedy 💔

omg, i just saw this movie and i'm still reeling from the experience 🤯 daisy ridley as ava is literally heartbreaking - her performance is so nuanced and intense it'll give you chills 😩 i loved how the film didn't go all gory on us, instead focusing on the emotional toll of loss & grief. the cinematography is stunning too!! 👏 the way they portrayed the natural world in the midst of chaos was just wow 🌳👻 the only thing that kept me from giving it a full 10/10 was how unoriginal the zombie premise felt, but hey, at least they did it with care & sensibility 💕

Omg did u guys see da new zombie movie We Bury the Dead? 🤯 Daisy Ridley's performance as Ava is literally breathtaking!!! 😍 she brings so much depth to her character its like u can feel her pain & grief 🤕. i love how the film focuses more on the human side of things rather than just gore & carnage 💀👻. the cinematography is also insane!! 😲 the way they capture da beauty of nature in da midst of chaos is stunning 🌿💥 cant wait to watch it again! 👍

I'm so down for a zombie film that doesn't just focus on gore and explosions! You know back in the day we had Night of the Living Dead with George Romero, it was all about social commentary and the human condition. This one seems like a similar vibe - it's like they're saying "hey, let's explore what happens when we lose loved ones" instead of just going for the jump scares. Daisy Ridley is amazing in this role, she brings such depth to Ava's character. I'm excited to check it out! 🎥

I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed with how the film is presented here... 🤔 They're trying to make this whole "contemplative" thing work for me, but honestly, it feels kinda forced. I mean, yeah, Daisy Ridley's performance is solid and all that jazz... 😊 The visuals are pretty nice too, I'll give 'em that. But the script just doesn't feel like it's doing anything too new or interesting with the zombie genre. And don't even get me started on how they're trying to sell this thing in the UK and Aus... 🤑 It feels like they're more interested in the marketing side of things than actually giving us something unique. Still, I guess if you're into that sorta thing, We Bury the Dead might be worth a watch... 🎥👀

OMG yaaas! 😍 I'm soooo lovin' this new zombie movie!!! Daisy Ridley is literally the queen of emotional depth - she brings Ava's grief to life in a way that's super relatable n stuff 🤯. The cinematography is, like, whoa! 📸 Those breathtaking shots of Tasmania are giving me major FOMO 🌳👻. I'm not really into gore or the usual zombie tropes, so this film is, like, exactly what I needed - it's all about the human cost n the emotional toll n stuff 💔. The script is thoughtful n intelligent, no clichés here! 👍 Would defo check it out n watch it again 🎬

I'm so over how predictable zombie movies are these days 🙄. I mean, come on, a deadly catastrophe, zombies, apocalypse... yawn 😴. Can't we get some originality for once? And don't even get me started on the whole "walking dead are a phenomenon worthy of scientific study" thing 🧠. Give me something that actually makes me feel like I'm watching a movie and not just going through the motions 💀. At least this one tried to focus more on Ava's emotional toll, but still felt kinda safe from all the typical zombie tropes 🤔. Overall, it was alright, but not exactly blown me away 😐.

I'm loving this new zombie flick 🧠💀 - We Bury the Dead is like a breath of fresh air in a genre that can get super stale 😴. Daisy Ridley's performance as Ava is giving me all the feels, she conveys this sense of loss and grief that's just so raw and real 🌊. I love how they're not relying on gore or jump scares to scare you, instead it's all about the emotional toll of what's happening 🤕. The cinematography is insane, I mean who knew zombies could be beautiful? 🌳👻. It's not gonna change the world, but it's a solid addition to the mix and I'm here for it! 👍

I just watched this movie and I gotta say, Daisy Ridley really shines as the main character, Ava 🤩. It's not your typical zombie flick where everyone's all about killing and surviving. This one takes a different approach, focusing more on Ava's emotional journey and how she copes with losing her husband in such a disaster. The visuals are stunning, I mean, some of those shots were breathtaking! 😍 And Ridley just brings this sense of desperation to the role that makes you feel like you're right there with her, experiencing all her pain and grief. It's not a perfect movie by any means, but it's definitely a solid one and worth checking out if you're looking for something different from your usual zombie fare 🎥

🤯 just watched We Bury the Dead and I'm shook! 🧟‍♀️ The stats are crazy - 500k+ dead in Tasmania alone? 😱 That's like, one of the highest zombie death tolls ever recorded 📊. And the box office numbers are insane too... $10m opening weekend in the UK? 💸 Not bad for a smaller indie flick! 🎥 The cast is also on fire - Daisy Ridley shines as Ava, bringing 100% intensity to her role 👏. The visuals are straight fire 🔥, too - I mean, who knew zombies could look so... beautiful? 🌊 The film's got a 7/10 rating from Rotten Tomatoes and an A- CinemaScore... solid stuff! 💯

I'm loving Daisy Ridley's new film We Bury the Dead 🤯! I mean, she brings so much depth to her character Ava, it's like we're right there with her as she navigates this crazy world 🌎. The way they've handled the zombie aspect is so refreshing - not just all about gore and chaos, but actually exploring the emotional toll on people 🤕. And let me tell you, Ridley's performance gives chills every time 😱. The visuals are stunning too! Zak Hilditch really knows how to bring a story to life in a unique way 💫. I'd defo watch this again and would rec it to anyone looking for a thoughtful zombie flick 👍

🤔 I gotta say, Daisy Ridley as a zombie survivor really works for me! She brings so much emotional depth to her character, it's not just about the zombies, it's about Ava's personal struggle to cope with loss. The way the film focuses on the human side of things is really well done. 💀 But what I'd love to know is, are the special effects in this film actually that good? I mean, if they're going for a more scientific approach, do they live up to it? 🤔
