Weather tracker: Arctic air grips Europe as severe winds batter Corsica

Arctic air has tightened its grip on Europe, casting a chill over the continent as severe winds battered the island of Corsica. Temperatures plummeted across central regions, with some areas experiencing double-digit negatives - a far cry from the seasonal averages expected at this time of year.

In Eastern Europe, snowfall pummeled parts of Poland and Ukraine on New Year's Eve, with similar conditions observed in the Alps. The cold snap shows no signs of abating, as an Arctic air mass continues to sink south across the continent, pulling temperatures well below average outside of southeast Europe. By this week, it's expected that temperatures will drop by as much as 5C (9F) below normal, with some areas experiencing a far greater disparity - up to 10C (18F) lower than usual.

The severity of the cold is amplified when wind chill is factored in, making the conditions feel even more biting. The effects are not limited to Europe, however, as a similar cold air mass brought snow to South Korea, particularly on Jeju Island, where flights and ferries were cancelled due to heavy snowfall and strong winds.

In Corsica, remarkably strong winds took hold, battering the town of L'รŽle-Rousse with gusts reaching 60mph. Even more intense gusts - approaching 100mph - were recorded in the Cap Corse region, a peninsula on the island's north-east coast. While the Mistral wind is not uncommon in Corsica, this particular storm was different from the typical event.

The unusual setup of high pressure over the Atlantic and low pressure in the Gulf of Genoa funneled cold air through the narrow Rhรดne valley, causing it to accelerate rapidly before bursting over the Gulf of Lion. The resulting winds were directed eastward around the low-pressure system, eventually sweeping across the Balagne and Cap Corse regions of Corsica, bringing severe conditions to the island's northern tip.

Ugh, this cold snap is so freakin' crazy! ๐Ÿคฏ I'm still trying to get used to the idea that I need to wear like 3 layers just to go for a walk outside... what's next? ๐Ÿ˜‚ In all seriousness though, it's pretty wild how quickly this Arctic air mass has moved across Europe. Like, I've lived here my whole life and I've never seen anything like it. And poor Corsica, I feel bad for the people down there getting slammed with those insane winds! ๐Ÿ’จ 60mph is nothing to mess around with... what if they didn't have that special windbreak thingy? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Wow! โ„๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ This cold snap is crazy! I mean, 10C lower than usual? That's like, really icy. Interesting how it affected South Korea too, with flights and ferries cancelled. I wonder if the weather forecasters can predict this kind of extreme setup. The winds in Corsica were insane, though - 100mph is nuts! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

๐ŸŒŸ I mean, can you believe this cold snap? It's like Mother Nature decided to give Europe a big ol' wake-up call! ๐Ÿ˜‚ I know it's no fun being stuck indoors with the heating on max, but think of all the cozy Netflix binges and hot chocolate parties you get to have. Plus, snow is so pretty โ„๏ธ! And hey, who needs sunshine when you can have snowflakes gently falling outside? ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ I'm just glad everyone's safe and sound. The science-y stuff behind it all might be interesting to some, but let's focus on the good vibes ๐Ÿ˜Š. And on a lighter note, has anyone else ever had those crazy strong winds that make your windows rattle like crazy? Mind. Blown. ๐Ÿคฏ

omg u guys im literally freezing rn i live in paris and its like arctic out here ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ i was trying to go for a jog this morning but my legs were all numb lol did u see the news about corsica tho?!? 60mph gusts in l'รฎle-rousse?!?! that's wild ๐Ÿคฏ im glad they cancelled flights on jeju island though snow day is the best ๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŒจ๏ธ

๐Ÿ˜ฌ OMG have you noticed how crazy weather is getting lately?! I mean, I'm all for a good winter wonderland vibe, but this cold snap is wild! I was planning on spending New Year's Eve at home, cozying up with some hot chocolate and a face mask ๐Ÿง–โ€โ™€๏ธ... not exactly the chilliest of plans. But honestly, it's kinda cool to see Europe getting a taste of that Arctic air โ„๏ธ. Corsica, though? 60mph winds?! That's just intense! I hope everyone stayed safe ๐Ÿ’•. On a more serious note, have you noticed how our planet is really struggling with temperature extremes lately? It's all about balance, guys ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’š. We need to take care of ourselves and the earth while it still can ๐Ÿ˜Š.

Ugh, great timing for a cold snap just when I was finally warming up from all the holiday cookies ๐Ÿช๐Ÿ˜’. Like, can't we have some decent weather for once? โ„๏ธ I'm still trying to figure out why people live in places like Corsica, anyway... "Hey, let's move to an island with no air conditioning and unpredictable weather!" ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ Sounds like a dream come true, right? ๐Ÿ™„ At least they have some cool (get it?) wind-related disasters to deal with instead of, you know, sweltering summers ๐Ÿ˜’. And on the bright side, I guess it's not all bad that we're getting to relive our favorite winter movies and TV shows for real this time around... just don't expect me to be all festive about it ๐Ÿ˜.

Ugh, I'm so glad I got to spend New Year's Eve stuck in bed with a face full of blankets...I mean, who needs a fireworks display when you can have -20ยฐC outside? ๐Ÿฅถ๐Ÿ˜ด The weather forecast is basically just telling us we should all stay home and drink hot chocolate for the next week. And seriously, 100mph winds on Corsica? That's like something out of a Bond villain movie ๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿ‘Š. I'm all for a good excuse to cancel flights and ferries, but come on Jeju Island, you're like the Korean version of us, "Oh no, we can't make it to work, the snow is too deep"... ๐Ÿ˜‚

Umm I don't get why ppl are freaking out about this cold snap ๐Ÿ˜’. I mean yeah temps have dropped but its not like we're gonna freeze to death or something. It sounds like a typical winter storm to me. And whats up with all these wind chill warnings? Can't ppl just bundle up like normal? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Corsica is an island btw, so I think 60mph gusts are a bit expected. I mean its not like we're talking about some random village here. The weather forecast was pretty obvious too - low pressure in the Gulf of Genoa would bring cold air from the north. Not exactly rocket science ๐Ÿš€

Brrr! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ I'm glad I have my warmest coat ready for this crazy cold snap! ๐Ÿงฅโ„๏ธ 5-10 degrees below normal is a lot to deal with, especially when you factor in that wind chill. ๐Ÿ˜“ And poor Corsica, getting slammed by those strong winds? โ›ˆ๏ธ 60mph and even higher gusts? That's intense! ๐Ÿ’จ I can see why flights and ferries got cancelled... not exactly the most ideal way to start the new year. ๐Ÿคฏ At least it's not happening everywhere, right? ๐Ÿ™ Hope it warms up soon for everyone! โ˜€๏ธ

Brrr! ๐Ÿ˜“ I'm so glad people are being safe and staying indoors with this crazy cold snap ๐Ÿค—. The idea that temperatures could drop by as much as 5C (9F) below normal is just wild โ„๏ธ. And don't even get me started on the wind chill - it sounds like it's freezing out there! ๐Ÿ˜… I feel for anyone having to deal with cancelled flights and ferries in South Korea, too ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ. At least they're getting some snow? โค๏ธ Anyway, it's always a good excuse to cozy up with a warm cuppa โ˜•๏ธ and some Netflix... or start thinking about all the yoga poses to do to get warm again ๐Ÿ˜Š!

Ugh, winter is literally here ๐Ÿคฃ! I'm so over this cold snap already! Like, can't we just go back to those warm spring days we had last year? ๐Ÿ˜’ Corsica is getting slammed with 60mph winds? That's crazy! I feel like the Mistral wind is having a bad day, lol. Snow in South Korea too? Jeju Island is totally getting hit hard. This cold air mass is just ruining it for everyone ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ. I'm all about cozying up by the fireplace with a hot cup of tea and some popcorn now ๐Ÿ˜Š

Wow ๐Ÿคฏ! I'm still trying to wrap my head around this crazy cold snap hitting Europe ๐Ÿ˜ฑ! 60mph winds in Corsica? That's insane ๐Ÿ’ฅ! And the fact that temperatures are expected to drop by as much as 10C (18F) below normal is just, wow ๐Ÿ™Œ. I've lived through some chilly winters before, but this is on a whole different level โ„๏ธ. I hope everyone staying in these areas has proper supplies and safety precautions in place โš ๏ธ. This is just so interesting! ๐Ÿ˜Š

ugh this cold snap is crazy ๐Ÿ˜ฉ but like on a positive note it's so cool how science can explain all these crazy weather patterns ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ i mean who needs a beach vacation when you can have a snow day in corsica โ„๏ธ? and can we talk about the mistral wind - that thing is intense ๐Ÿ’จ. seriously though, 5-10 degrees below normal is wild ๐Ÿ˜ฒ but at least it's not freezing all over europe... yet ๐Ÿคž let's just hope our heating bills don't skyrocket this month ๐Ÿ˜‰

๐Ÿ˜ฌ This cold snap is seriously crazy! I'm no weather expert but even I can see how bad it gets when you factor in wind chill. Like, 10C lower than usual? That's insane! And South Korea getting snow too? That's just wild ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ. Corsica's winds were literally blowing at 100mph in some areas?! I mean, I love a good beach vacation but not when the weather is this intense ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. Guess it's time to stay cozy indoors with a hot cuppa and watch the snowfall from afar... โ„๏ธ

Ugh this cold snap is crazy right now ๐Ÿฅถ๐Ÿ’จ I'm already dreading January with these temps plummeting everywhere! Poland & Ukraine are getting slammed, but Corsica is the one that's really taking a hit - 100mph gusts?! That's wild! And South Korea got snow too? Makes sense that they'd get hit since it's all about that Arctic air mass... Anyway, hope everyone stays warm and safe out there ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’ช
