White House Optimistic Over Russia-US Talks Ahead of Putin Meeting
US officials are in a positive mood ahead of the special envoy meeting between Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin, with talks set to take place in Moscow on Tuesday. The White House is hoping that the discussions will mark an important step towards peace in the Ukraine conflict.
According to the Kremlin, Putin prepared for the talks by meeting with military commanders and a governor of a frontline territory. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that there was no doubt this would be a "very important step towards peace and peaceful settlement".
Despite expectations that Russia may not agree to any concessions, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt described US officials as "very optimistic" following meetings with Ukrainian officials in Florida. However, progress is seen as still requiring refinement.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also expressed a commitment to achieving real peace and guaranteed security, but noted that Russia must also make an effort. Russian forces have recently claimed control of two cities where fighting has been intense, in a move aimed at demonstrating its leading position on the battlefield.
The meeting is the sixth time Witkoff has met with Putin this year, amid a push by the White House to produce a peace deal in the conflict that began over 4 years ago.
