Why Feyenoord's 1970 European Cup win was a sliding doors moment for Celtic

Celtic's European Cup final defeat to Feyenoord in 1970 is often seen as a turning point in the club's history, a moment that could have been the springboard for greatness but ultimately became a cautionary tale of hubris and complacency.

The Dutch side, fueled by Jock Stein's bold tactics, took advantage of Celtic's overconfidence to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. The final was a disaster for the Hoops, with Tommy Gemmell's opener quickly cancelled out by Rinus Israël, before Ove Kindvall's late equalizer sealed a 2-1 win.

But what made Feyenoord's success all the more remarkable was that it sent shockwaves throughout European football. Ajax went on to dominate the continent, winning three consecutive European Cups, while Celtic slumped into an abyss of mediocrity from which they have yet to fully recover.

The loss also marked a significant shift in the club's approach under Stein. The manager had invested heavily in young talent known as the Quality Street Gang, but his decision-making was hampered by pressure and complacency. Wim Jansen, a former Celtic player, would later emerge as a key architect of Stein's downfall.

For Celtic fans, the final remains a painful reminder of what could have been. The club's inability to recapture their European Cup-winning form has left them stuck in a rut, struggling to break into the Champions League knockout phase. The contrast between 1970 and today is stark, with Feyenoord now languishing in 29th place in the Europa League table.

Celtic's current woes are a far cry from Stein's bold ambitions, which were fueled by an expectation that his team would continue to dominate European football. Instead, the club has become mired in controversy and disarray, a reflection of the very same complacency that doomed them at San Siro all those years ago.

The 1970 European Cup final was a missed opportunity for Celtic, one that has haunted the club ever since. It serves as a reminder that sometimes, it's not just about winning tournaments, but also about sustaining success over time.

🤔 I mean, think about it... Feyenoord basically derailed Celtic's entire strategy with their bold tactics under Jock Stein 🚀 And then they went on to win three consecutive European Cups... that's like, a whole different level of dominance 💥 But what really gets me is how the loss in 1970 has stuck with Celtic for so long 😔 They've had some great moments since then, but it's always this feeling of "what if?" 🤯 Like, what if Stein hadn't gotten too caught up in his own hype? What if he'd found a way to balance innovation with stability? 🤷‍♂️ It's like they're still trying to find that balance today, and it's causing them to stumble again 👎

Feyenoord's win in 1970 was crazy! I mean, they got destroyed by Celtic and then went on to win the whole thing 🤯. And now Celtic is struggling so much more than Feyenoord. It's like, what happened? 😔 They had this amazing team back then with Jock Stein and Tommy Gemmell and all these other legends, but they just couldn't sustain it. And now the club is in shambles 🤕. I think Celtic needs to go back and watch that game again and see what they could've done differently. Maybe they can learn from their own history? 🏆

I dont think its fair on Feyenoord tho 💔 they got robbed of that cup 🏆 2-1 is a bloody close margin 😅 if stein had made some better subs or tactics, maybe the outcome wouldve been different 🤷‍♂️ also, what happened to all those young talent from quality street gang? 👀 didnt seem like it worked out for any of them in the long run 📉

I feel bad for Celts fans 🤕... I mean, they had such high hopes back in 1970 and thought they were invincible after all those European Cup wins, but Feyenoord really came out of nowhere and gave them a taste of reality 😱. It's crazy to think that Celtic has never quite regained that level of success since then. And now they're still struggling 🤦‍♂️... it's like they're stuck in some kind of football Groundhog Day ☀️. The thing is, though, even though the loss was a disaster at the time, it actually ended up having a pretty cool effect on European football as a whole 🌐. Who knows, maybe that experience taught Celtic to be more humble and adaptable? 🤔

man I feel so bad for celtic fans 🤕 they've been in this rut for ages and it's like they're stuck on repeat 😩 the 1970 final was such a turning point for them and it's crazy how much has changed since then 🔄 ajax dominating europe is one thing but it's not like celtic just slumped into mediocrity, they actually made some big changes after stein left and tried to rebuild 🏗️ still can't seem to get out of the shadows though 👎
