WIRED Roundup: DHS’s Privacy Breach, AI Romantic Affairs, and Google Sues Text Scammers

The conversation between Zoë Schiffer and Brian Barrett continues from where they left off, discussing the data breach incident involving the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) collecting data on hundreds of Chicago residents who were allegedly affiliated with gangs.

Brian Barrett: "I think there is such a push to gather as much data as you can about as much people as you can, and use tools provided by companies like Palantir to collate and cross-reference that data."

Zoë Schiffer: "If there was anything that I learned from my brief stint working in the US government, it's that very bad things can happen, and oftentimes it's because of bureaucracy, laziness, and sloppiness more than a nefarious desire to make people's lives terrible, but the results can be the same."

Brian Barrett: "Thank you so much for joining me today."

Zoë Schiffer: "That's our show for today, we'll link to all the stories we spoke about in the show notes. Make sure to check out Thursday's episode of Uncanny Valley, which is a deep dive into Palantir CEO, Alex Karp. Adriana Tapia and Mark Leyda produced this episode. Amar Lal at Macro Sound mixed this episode. Kate Osborn is our executive producer, and Katie Drummond is WIRED's global editorial director."

🤯 this conversation is giving me major chills I mean, think about it - the US government collecting data on innocent people without their consent? what's next, they're gonna start using AI to predict who might get a speeding ticket 🚗💡. It's like something out of a sci-fi movie, but unfortunately, it feels all too real. and don't even get me started on Palantir - those guys are like the ultimate data bros 💻👀. I'm low-key nervous about where our personal data is going to end up 🤷‍♀️.

OMG 🤯 like I'm literally shook by this DHS data breach thingy... how can we even allow this to happen?! 😱 they're collecting info on hundreds of Chicago residents just because they might be affiliated with gangs?! 🚨 that's, like, totally unacceptable. and now Brian Barrett is saying Palantir is helping them collate all the data? 😬 what's next?! using AI to predict crimes before they even happen?! it gives me chills 🕷️ Zoë Schiffer is so right, though - bureaucracy/laziness/sloppiness can lead to some crazy stuff... 👀 gotta stay vigilant and keep those in power accountable 💪

😊 I'm really surprised to hear that the Department of Homeland Security was collecting data on Chicago residents affiliated with gangs. It sounds like a huge breach of trust - shouldn't we be more careful about who has access to our personal info? 🤔 The idea of Palantir using its tools to collate and cross-reference data makes me nervous, I don't know if it's always for the best... what do you guys think about this stuff? 🤝

this data breach incident is just a reminder that our government needs to get its act together when it comes to protecting ppl's personal info 🤦‍♀️💻 the fact that hundreds of Chicago residents were affected because of bureaucracy & sloppiness is just sad 😔 palantir is like a big tool for gov agencies to collect all this data, but sometimes it feels like they're losing control 📈 i wish they'd prioritize ppl's safety over the push for more power 🙏

🤯 I'm still trying to wrap my head around the whole Palantir situation 🙄. It's wild to think that some people are willing to use tech for mass surveillance, even if it means messing with innocent lives. And Zoë Schiffer is right, it's often just bureaucratic red tape and laziness that can lead to these kinds of disasters 🤦‍♀️. We need more transparency around how our data is being used, especially when it involves sensitive info about people's personal lives 💻.

I just finished watching that convo between Zoë Schiffer and Brian Barrett 🤯, and I gotta say it really got me thinking about how messed up things can be when data collection gets out of hand 🤖. It's crazy to think that Palantir's tools could be used by the gov't to collate info on people just because they might be affiliated with certain gangs 👥. What if someone had a family member in one of those groups? Would they suddenly become a suspect too? 😬 This whole thing makes me super anxious 🤯, and I just wish there was more transparency and accountability when it comes to all this data collection 📊. We need to make sure our voices are being heard 👂

this is so messed up 🤕 the fact that DHS was collecting data on people just because they were affiliated with gangs is crazy 🚔 i mean who gives government agencies access to this kind of info? it's like they think they're above the law or something 😒 and palantir's role in all this doesn't help... it's like a big web of surveillance 🕵️‍♀️ we need more transparency and accountability from our governments 💬

omg y'all i'm still getting my mind blown by all the data breaches & gov't mishaps 🤯! Zoë Schiffer's point about it being bureaucracy, laziness, & sloppiness more than anything else tho... makes so much sense 🤔. like we gotta keep pushing for transparency & accountability, especially when it comes to our personal info 📊. and btw, who knew Palantir was involved in this whole thing? 🤖 scary stuff! 👀

🤔 I'm really frustrated about this data breach incident with the DHS collecting info on Chicago residents affiliated with gangs 🚨💻. It's just so shady that they're using these massive amounts of personal data for who-knows-what reasons 🤷‍♀️. And what really gets me is that it's not like a new thing, this kind of mass surveillance is already happening all over the place 🔍. We need to be more mindful about how our data is being used and by who 💡. It's just so easy for things like this to slip through the cracks due to bureaucratic red tape 📝.

OMG 🤯 u guys cant even trust ur own goverment anymore. like literally they siphon off data on ppl affiliated w/ gangs 🤬 and no one knows about it till its out in the open. this is what happens when u have these huge corporation's like Palantir running amok w/ all that data. its like a big ol' messy spreadsheet waiting to happen 📊👀

I gotta say, it's kinda wild how easily this data breach happened 🤯. I mean, Palantir is like a tool that's supposed to help with security, but if the DHS can mess up something that simple... what else are they gonna mess up? 😅 It's not just about being nefarious, it's about having enough checks and balances in place to prevent this kind of thing from happening. Bureaucracy can be a real problem too, like Zoë said 🤦‍♀️. We need more transparency around these kinds of incidents so we can learn from them and move forward 💡

I don't think we should jump to conclusions about the intentions of our government agencies 🤔. I mean, Zoë said it was bureaucracy, laziness, and sloppiness that can lead to bad things happening... but what if it was just a mistake? Like, one person misread a file or something? 🙄 We gotta consider all the possibilities here, not just the most sensational ones. And let's not forget, Palantir is just trying to help with data analysis and whatnot... I'm sure they're not maliciously collecting info on innocent people 🤷‍♂️. It's always good to look at both sides before jumping to conclusions, right? 💡

I'M SO FREAKED OUT BY THIS DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY DATA BREACH INCIDENT!!! IT'S LIKE THEY'RE PLAYING A BIG GAME OF RISK WITH PEOPLE'S PRIVACY AND SAFETY! I MEAN, WHO GIVES THE GO-AHEAD FOR COLLECTING PERSONAL DATA ON HUNDREDS OF CHICAGO RESIDENTS WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT?! IT JUST SOUNDS LIKE MORE FUEL FOR THE FIRE OF TRUST ISSUES AND BUREAUCRATIC RED TAPE!!!

🤔 I'm still trying to wrap my head around the whole Palantir thing... they're like a super powerful tool for data collection, but at what cost? 📊😬 I mean, imagine if the NSA was collecting all this info on innocent people just because they might be affiliated with gangs or something. That's just creepy, you know? 🤷‍♀️ And it's not like Palantir is doing anything wrong, per se... but still, it raises some major red flags about surveillance and government control 🚨💻. I'm all for keeping our country safe, but there has to be a better way to do it than gathering info on everyone just in case 🤔.

I'm still fuming about this DHS data breach thingy 😡!! It's just so...so...unbelievable! Like, I get that they're trying to keep the city safe and all, but do they really need to collect data on hundreds of innocent people?! Like, what if those people weren't even involved with gangs? What if they were just regular people who got targeted by mistake?! 🤯 It's like, can't we trust our government to get it right for once?!

And don't even get me started on Palantir! I mean, I know some people think they're doing good things, but what about all the controversy surrounding them? It's like, if you're gonna collect data on anyone, can't you at least make sure that data is being used for good?! 🤷‍♀️ This whole thing just makes me so angry! 😤
