A shooting at a trail ride event in Houston left one person dead and multiple others injured, authorities said on Saturday night. The incident occurred in the 11300 block of Homestead Road, where hundreds had gathered for a horseback riding event.
According to police, officers were called to disperse the crowd after some individuals began behaving erratically. However, as the situation escalated, shots were fired at each other, and multiple people were shot.
Eyewitnesses described hearing multiple gunshots, with one witness recounting that they heard what sounded like "boom, boom, boom" followed by dozens of rounds being fired. The victims who were shot included four individuals aged 16, 20, 22, and another 20-year-old, two of whom are in critical condition.
The Houston Police Department said it received multiple calls for traffic control in the area before shots rang out, with employees at a strip center reporting that they had made those calls. However, officials noted that there was no apparent motive behind the shooting.
"We're investigating what appears to be a mass shooting," an HPD spokesperson said.
Multiple victims were taken to hospitals, including three who took themselves to the emergency room and two others who are stable after receiving medical treatment. The deceased victim was identified as a 20-year-old male.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with homicide detectives taking over the case. Authorities believe that there may have been multiple shooters involved.
Witnesses expressed shock and sadness at the events, which they described as chaotic. "I came through here, it was blocked," one witness said. "Then when I left the house in Wayside, they were coming down Tidwell, and they had it blocked...now someone gets shot. It's just sad."
