12/17: The Takeout with Major Garrett

Gunman Remains at Large After Brown University Shooting, Co-Founder of Ben & Jerry's Joins The Takeout.

In a shocking turn of events, two people were killed in a shooting incident at Brown University on December 10th, leaving many with unanswered questions and concerns about school safety.

Major Garrett, the host of The Takeout podcast, sat down with CBS News to discuss this tragic event and its aftermath.

Garrett began by sharing his thoughts on what happened during the shooting. "The shooter was in the classroom with two other students when he fired shots," Garrett explained. "One student managed to escape, while the other was shot and killed."

As the investigation into the incident continues, officials have confirmed that the shooter remains at large.

Meanwhile, Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben & Jerry's ice cream company, joined The Takeout to share his thoughts on school safety and the importance of addressing gun violence in our communities.

"We need to take a hard look at our country's gun laws," Cohen said. "We can't keep relying on mass shootings as a way to get people's attention."

Garrett also touched on the growing debate about mental health and its connection to mass shootings.

"We're seeing more and more cases of individuals with untreated mental illnesses committing violent acts," Garrett noted. "It's time for us to rethink our approach to mental health and provide support for those who need it most."

The Takeout podcast is available now on CBS News.

Ugh this feels like a huge wake up call 🀯... I mean, Brown University, one of the safest colleges in the country, and still something like this happens? It's crazy how quickly things can turn from a normal day to chaos 😱. And to have that many people hurt is just devastating πŸ’”. The thing is, I think we need to have a conversation about school safety, but also about our gun laws πŸ€”... I mean, it's not like these shootings are going to magically stop because we say so πŸ‘€. We need real change and we need it now πŸ•°οΈ.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole Brown University shooting thing 🀯. I mean, think about it - two kids dead, one in the classroom, the other in the hallway... it's like a real-life video game, right? But here's the thing - when does enough become enough?! When do we just say, "You know what? We've had enough of these mass shootings." And I'm not talking about our reaction to this incident alone, I'm talking about the fact that we keep electing leaders who don't seem to care about gun control πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, come on! Our country's been telling us for years that we need stricter gun laws, but nothing ever seems to change. It's like our politicians are just playing a never-ending game of "let's wait and see" while innocent lives are lost in the process πŸ’”.

πŸ€” the thing that really got me about this whole situation is how quickly we're all getting into the debate about gun laws vs mental health πŸš¨πŸ’‘ like what if we combined both approaches? 🀝 maybe instead of just addressing one or the other, we could be talking about creating safer spaces for people to get help when they need it most πŸ’ŠπŸ« and at the same time figuring out ways to prevent these mass shootings from happening in the first place πŸ”πŸ’ͺ

OMG, this shooting incident at Brown University is just too much 🀯... I mean, two students killed? It's a tragedy, for sure. But what really gets me is that the shooter is still out there πŸš”... like, how can we even have a conversation about school safety when the bad guy is on the loose?

And Ben Cohen saying we need to take a hard look at our gun laws is SO true πŸ’‘... I mean, it's not just about the shooting incident, it's about the fact that this could happen to anyone, anywhere. We can't just sit back and wait for something like this to happen again.

I'm all for addressing mental health too 🀝... we need to make sure people are getting the help they need before things escalate. It's time for us to step up and support each other, you know? πŸ’–

Its just so sad what happened at Brown University πŸ€•. My heart goes out to the families of those two students who lost their lives. It's crazy how quickly these things can happen, and its like we're all waiting for that next mass shooting to happen again. I think its time for us to have a real talk about gun laws in this country, like Ben Cohen said 🀝. We need to find a way to balance our rights with keeping everyone safe. Mental health is also a big part of the issue - we need to support those who are struggling and not just throw more money at the problem without addressing the root causes πŸ€‘. Its times for us to come together and think about what we can do differently.

I'm really worried about school shootings πŸ€•... like, what's going on with our country? We keep having these senseless tragedies and no one seems to be able to stop them. It's so frustrating! And now Ben Cohen is saying we need to rethink our approach to mental health... I feel like we should be doing more to support people who are struggling, not just locking them up or whatever. πŸ€”

I mean, I'm all for keeping guns out of schools and stuff, but it feels like this is a bigger issue than that. We need some real solutions here, you know? Like, how can we really prevent something like this from happening again? And what about the students who were there? They're going to be traumatized for life... πŸ€•

Man this Brown University shooting is really sad πŸ€• I remember back in 2013 when Adam Lanza shot up Sandy Hook Elementary School, I thought that was a wake-up call for everyone but we still have these crazy incidents happening πŸ˜”. Ben Cohen makes sense though, our gun laws need to change ASAP πŸ’ͺ it's not just about the shooters, think about all those families affected by school violence and mental health struggles... we gotta do better 🀝

I'm so sick of everyone freaking out about school shootings like they're some kind of rare event πŸ™„. I mean, come on, we live in a country with more guns than people... it's basically a fact that someone's gonna get hurt at some point. And you know what? It might just be the student who was trying to escape πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. We need to stop jumping all over ourselves every time something happens and take responsibility for our own actions instead of relying on gun control laws to save us πŸ˜’.

And another thing, Ben Cohen is totally off base when he says we should rethink our approach to mental health πŸ™„. I mean, what's next? Are we gonna start telling people with anxiety or depression that they're just being too emotional and need to toughen up? No way 🚫. Mental illness is a serious issue that requires serious support... not some watered-down Band-Aid solution like Cohen suggests πŸ’”.

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ just another day, another school shooting πŸ€• can't believe we're still having this conversation in 2025... like, what's the plan here? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ gun laws need a serious overhaul ASAP, no more loopholes or excuses. 🚫 mental health is being taken seriously (eventually?) but for now, it's all about pointing fingers and saying "what could've been done differently?" πŸ™„ Ben Cohen said it best - let's just get real and acknowledge we have a problem πŸ’―

omg u guys i was literally just thinking about this news yesterday i mean two people dead at Brown Uni?? so scary πŸ€• my cousin went to college there like 5 yrs ago and she's still traumatized from the whole Virginia Tech thing idk how ppl can live with the constant fear of being shot lol anyway back to this - ben & jerries co-founder is literally speaking truth to power i'm low-key obsessed with his ice cream but also super proud of him for using his platform to advocate for change πŸ¦πŸ’–

OMG, this is so sad πŸ€•! I'm thinking of all the students at Brown University right now, can't even imagine how scary that must have been 😱. Ben Cohen said some really wise things about gun laws, I think we need to listen and make some changes ASAP πŸ™. Mental health is super important too, let's support each other and get help when we need it πŸ’•. Sending love and positive vibes to everyone affected by this tragedy πŸ’–

omg this is so sad πŸ€• i cant even imagine being in a school shooting situation its like something out of a horror movie anyone have any thoughts on how to prevent these things from happening? like we all want to feel safe at our schools but clearly thats not the case right now i mean ben and jerrys guy is totally right we need to talk about gun laws and mental health its not that simple but im sure there has to be a way to address this issue without taking away everyone's rights πŸ€”

man this brown university shooting is still so fresh in everyone's minds πŸ€• and to think that the shooter is still out there, its like we're living in a never ending nightmare 😩. i'm trying to stay hopeful that they catch him soon, but at the same time, it makes me really sad for the families of those two students who lost their lives πŸ’”. and you know what gets me even more frustrated? how nothing seems to change after these mass shootings πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. we keep having these conversations about gun control and mental health, but still, these things keep happening πŸŒͺ️. i guess that's why ben cohen's words really stuck with me - we do need to take a hard look at our country's laws and provide support for those who are struggling πŸ’‘. but can we ever truly make our communities safe? it feels like the answer is always "not yet" πŸ˜•.

can't believe these mass shootings are still happening πŸ€• like, we've been talking about this for years and what's changing? nothing πŸ™„ ben cohen is totally right though, our gun laws are super lax and it's a big part of the problem πŸ’” i'm so tired of hearing "what could've been done differently?" when it comes to these incidents... like, we know how to prevent this stuff from happening πŸ˜’ btw, ben & jerry's should really consider donating some of that ice cream money to a mental health fund πŸ¦πŸ’Έ

so the shooter just walked into class, like what? no one was even expecting this 😱 and we're still not talking about why he did it or how we can prevent something like this in the future... sounds like a total cop-out to me πŸ€” major garrett's got some good points though, but where's the evidence on mental health? all this 'mental illness' talk feels like just another way to avoid discussing real gun control issues πŸ’‘

omg what just happened at brown university?? 🀯 two people died in a shooting it's so sad i keep thinking about the students who were there and how they're dealing with this tragedy πŸ˜” anyway ben & jerrys guy said something really interesting about gun laws being super important we need to do something about mass shootings cuz they're getting way too common πŸ’₯

πŸ€• I just can't even imagine what the students at Brown University were going through that day 😩. It's like something out of a horror movie, you know? And then to have this co-founder of Ben & Jerry's come along and talk about gun laws... it feels like we're still stuck in the same old cycle πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. Remember when ice cream was just $1.50 a scoop at Ben & Jerry's back in the 90s?! πŸ˜‚ Now, I'm not saying that's what's causing all this violence, but it does make me wonder if we've lost something along the way... like our innocence πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. Anyway, hope those students who were in the classroom with the shooter are doing okay πŸ’•.

so shocking what happened at Brown University 🀯 the fact that one student escaped and the other was killed in a classroom is just crazy... and Ben Cohen joining The Takeout to talk about school safety and gun laws is super relevant, I mean we've been hearing this argument for years now πŸ’‘ but it's still not being taken seriously enough. mental health is definitely something we need to be talking about more, it's clear that untreated illnesses can lead to violent behavior... but how do we balance that with the second amendment? πŸ€”
