Two people were injured in a small plane crash near Downers Grove on Friday afternoon after the single-engine aircraft veered off the runway and crashed into a backyard, according to authorities.
The accident occurred shortly before noon when the pilot lost control of the Cessna 195 as it attempted a landing at the Brookeridge Airpark. Witnesses reported that the plane rolled over and came to rest in a residential area. Thankfully, both occupants were able to exit the aircraft under their own power and received medical attention.
The proximity of the airpark to nearby homes poses significant safety concerns, with runways surrounded by hangars attached to properties that primarily belong to homeowners. "It's a very unique situation," said Dave Rutter, board president of Brookeridge Aero Associates Inc., which owns and operates the airpark near the Carriage Greens Country Club.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident, which resulted in significant damage to the aircraft. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, but the accident serves as a reminder of the importance of strict safety protocols and precautions when operating aircraft.
