5-year-old and father detained by ICE in Columbia Heights, shaking community

ICE Detention of Minors Shatters School District's Sense of Security in Columbia Heights

The recent detention of four students, including a 5-year-old boy and his father, by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers has left the school district in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, feeling shaken and heartbroken. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of schools, particularly those with immigrant families.

According to school officials, two children were taken from their homes earlier this week, including a 17-year-old boy who was on his way to school when he was removed by ICE officers. In another incident, a 5-year-old boy named Liam Ramos was taken with his father while just arriving home from preschool in the afternoon. The child's father claimed that he had fled federal agents as they approached their vehicle, leaving the child behind.

The Department of Homeland Security has since clarified that Liam was not targeted by ICE but was "abandoned" by his father. However, the school district and Liam's attorney dispute this account, stating that the family entered the US legally from Ecuador and that Liam's father does not have a criminal record.

This incident is not an isolated case; two weeks ago, another 10-year-old student in fourth grade was taken by ICE agents on her way to elementary school with her mother. The child called her father on the phone as ICE agents approached, and her father later arrived at the school to find that both his daughter and wife had been taken.

The school district is now seeking public support to advocate for an immediate and peaceful resolution to this situation. Superintendent Zena Stenvik stated, "We are asking you to please reach out to your congressional representative to ask for an immediate and peaceful resolution to this occupation... Please help us and other schools to again be a safe place where all belong and all succeed."

The incident has raised concerns about ICE's presence in schools and the impact it has on families and communities. The school district is working with an immigration lawyer to explore options for getting the students back to Minnesota, but the situation remains uncertain.

As the community comes together to support the affected families, questions remain about how such incidents can be prevented and what measures can be taken to ensure that schools remain safe havens for all students, regardless of their immigration status.

๐Ÿค• I'm literally heartbroken reading this ๐Ÿค•. Four-year-old Liam was just playing preschool when his dad was "abandoned" by ICE agents ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. No parent should ever have to go through that trauma and stress on a daily basis. The fact that the school district is being asked to take on all this emotional weight is overwhelming โš ๏ธ.

We need more support for families like Liam's, not just from the government, but also from our community ๐Ÿค. We can make a difference by spreading awareness about the impact of ICE's actions and advocating for humane treatment of migrant families ๐ŸŒŽ. Schools should be safe spaces for all students, regardless of their background or immigration status ๐Ÿ“š.

We need to hold our elected officials accountable for creating policies that prioritize family unity over enforcement ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ. The fact that two separate incidents have happened in just a couple of weeks is unacceptable ๐Ÿ˜ต. We can't keep letting this happen without speaking out ๐Ÿ’ช.

this is so scary for these kids they deserve to feel safe in school like every other kid ๐Ÿค• my heart goes out to the Ramos family I dont know how they must be feeling right now and to have this happen twice to different families is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ˜” what can we do as a community to make sure no more kids get affected by this kind of thing? maybe schools could have some kind of resource or support system in place for families with immigration issues but at the same time i think it's also important to hold ice accountable for their actions and make sure they are following the law ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ we need to come together as a community to support these families and advocate for change ๐Ÿค

๐Ÿค• this is getting too out of hand, ICE needs to clarify its policies ASAP. detaining minors is just not right ๐Ÿšซ. schools are supposed to be safe spaces for kids to learn and grow, not a place where they can be torn apart from their families due to paperwork errors or miscommunications. it's heartbreaking to think about those 4 students (including that poor 5-year-old) being taken away without warning or explanation. ๐Ÿคฏ what kind of system lets this happen?

๐Ÿค” this is getting outta hand ICE detaining kids in schools is just wrong I mean who gets taken away from school on their first day or at preschool? it's so scary for those little ones and their parents ๐Ÿค• my heart goes out to the Ramos family and that 10-year-old girl who was taken too... what if she had a seizure or something while ICE agents were there? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ we need some answers here how can this keep happening in our country? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

ICE is like the ultimate school bully

This situation needs to get 'tempered down' ASAP

ICE's actions are breaking hearts and destroying families

The recent ICE detention of minors in Columbia Heights is a super concerning issue ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’”. I mean, can you even imagine being a parent and watching your kid get taken away by agents? It's like, what's next? Is our school going to start with ICE on campus every day? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ The fact that a 5-year-old boy was left behind while his dad was 'abandoned' is just heartbreaking. I feel so bad for the Ramos family and all the other families who are going through this.

As a community, we need to come together and support these families ๐Ÿค. We need to make our voices heard and advocate for some kind of resolution that doesn't involve putting kids in harm's way ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ. I'm so frustrated with how ICE is handling this situation - it's like they're not even considering the impact on families and communities.

We need to ask ourselves, what's the purpose of having ICE agents in schools? Are we supposed to be their police department or something? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ It doesn't make sense. Our schools should be safe havens for all students, regardless of their immigration status. We shouldn't have to worry about being 'detained' just because our kid is a US citizen ๐Ÿ‘ถ.

I'm definitely going to reach out to my rep and advocate for some change ๐Ÿ“. I hope others will do the same too ๐Ÿ’ช. This incident has shaken me, but I won't let it break us - we need to come together and fight for what's right ๐Ÿ’•.

OMG, this is so messed up!!! ๐Ÿคฏ How can ICE just swoop in and take kids from school? It's like, they're not even 18 yet! What if Liam was scared or didn't know what was happening? His dad saying he abandoned him doesn't sound right... ๐Ÿค”

And what about the other family who got taken two weeks ago? That poor kid must have been traumatized. Schools are supposed to be safe spaces, not places where ICE comes in and tears families apart ๐Ÿ˜ข

I think it's time for us to stand up for these kids and their families. We need more awareness about this issue and how it affects our communities. Maybe we can start a petition or something? Who knows, maybe we can even get some change ๐Ÿคž

I'M SO SAD TO HEAR ABOUT THIS RECENT INCIDENT AT THAT SCHOOL IN COLUMBIA HEIGHTS!!! IT'S JUST NOT RIGHT THAT A 5-YEAR-OLD BOY HAD TO GO THROUGH THIS - BEING TAKEN FROM HIS FATHER BY ICE OFFICERS WHILE THEY WERE JUST TRYING TO GET HOME FROM PRESCHOOL!!! ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ’” HOW CAN ANY FAMILY EXPECT TO FEEL SAFE IN THEIR COMMUNITY WHEN THEY KNOW THAT ICE IS JUST WAITING AROUND THE CORNER FOR THEM?!?! WE NEED TO STAND UP AND DEMAND THAT OUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVES TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT THESE FAMILIES AND KEEP THEM SAFE!!!

๐Ÿค• OMG this is so scary for the kids involved! I mean a 5-year-old getting separated from his dad in the middle of the afternoon? It's just not right ๐Ÿšซ. And to think that Liam's dad claimed he got "abandoned" by ICE, but really it was just a misunderstanding... that doesn't make it okay ๐Ÿ˜”. Schools should be safe spaces for all kids, no matter what their families' situations are. We need to raise awareness and get our elected officials to do something about this ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ. Can you imagine if this happened to your own kid? It's a nightmare come true ๐Ÿ’”.

๐Ÿค• This is so messed up! I'm literally shaking thinking about those little kids being taken away like they're nothing. ICE should not be in our schools, it's not right. What's next? Are we gonna start arresting people at school for just having a parent with a questionable record?

I'm so worried about Liam and his family, they didn't do anything wrong! And that 17-year-old who was on his way to school... what if he needed help or something? It's not fair. The parents should be working with the schools to make sure their kids are safe, not running away from them.

We need to do something about this, I don't care how hard it is. We can't let ICE just walk into our schools and start taking people away like they're nobody's business. It's a nightmare come true for these families.

I'm with the school district 100%, we need to stand together and make some noise. Who's gonna help Liam and his family get back home? ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’•

Wow ๐Ÿคฏ those young kids shouldn't have to go through this stress & fear just 'cause their parents are undocumented... schools r supposed 2 b safe spaces 4 all kiddos, not places of detention... something needs 2 change ASAP! ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿ’”

man this is so messed up ๐Ÿค• i dont think its fair that ice can just take away kids from their parents like thats not cool at all...i feel bad for the family who had their 5 year old son taken away, it must be super scary for them to have their kid taken away without even having a chance to say goodbye. schools are supposed to be safe spaces for kids, but with ice around theyre just not ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿค• this is really sad...ICE detaining kids in school is just not right ๐Ÿค it's like they're playing with people's lives and families' futures...what are we even gonna do to stop these situations from happening again? ๐Ÿ˜ฉ the fact that a 5-year-old boy was separated from his dad during the detention is heartbreaking ๐Ÿ’” my heart goes out to Liam and his family, and all the other affected students and their families too ๐Ÿค—

OMG this is so scary ๐Ÿ˜ฑ I was just thinking about our school's safety protocols last week and now this is happening in another district ๐Ÿคฏ Like what if it happens here? Our school has a lot of immigrant families too... I feel like we need to start talking about this more ASAP ๐Ÿ’ฌ We can't just sit back and do nothing, you know? The superintendent is right, we should be reaching out to our reps and asking for help. This isn't just an issue for the kids being detained, it's about how it affects the whole school community ๐Ÿค

man this is just so messed up ๐Ÿค• like what even is the point of having a system if it's gonna target kids like 5 years old? it's not even about being illegal or not, it's about being human and deserving some basic dignity. and now the school district is feeling all shook up because they can't even trust their own community anymore... it's just heartbreaking ๐Ÿค—

i think we need to talk about how systemic this is, you know? how ICE can just show up at schools and take kids away without even a trial? it's like they're above the law or something. and what about all these other families who are living in fear of being targeted because of their immigration status? like, how can we call ourselves a society if we can't even protect our most vulnerable members?

anyway, i'm just so done with this whole situation ๐Ÿคฏ all i want to do is get back to the basics of human decency and compassion... but it seems like that's not even on the table right now ๐Ÿ˜”

๐Ÿค• this is so messed up! i mean, a 5-year-old boy being torn from his dad in the middle of the day? it's not just the kids who are suffering, but also the families and communities that are getting shattered ๐ŸŒช๏ธ... what's the point of having an education system if we can't even ensure safety for our young ones? schools should be a sanctuary, not a place of fear and uncertainty ๐Ÿ˜”. i'm so tired of seeing these stories pop up, it's like we're living in a nightmare ๐Ÿคฏ. someone needs to take action ASAP and make sure these kids are returned home safely ๐Ÿ’•

just think about this ๐Ÿคฏ if you're a single parent or have an immigrant family, wouldn't it freak you out to know that ICE can just show up at your kid's school and take them away? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ i mean, what kind of system allows this to happen? schools are supposed to be safe spaces for kids, not places where they get caught in the middle of immigration drama ๐Ÿค”

i feel so bad for those families who have been affected by this. it's not just about getting their kids back, it's about the emotional toll that this must be taking on them ๐Ÿค• i hope the community comes together to support them and that the school district gets some answers on how to keep this from happening again ๐Ÿ’ช

man this is so scary for those kids who get caught up in all this ๐Ÿค•... remember when we had the school lockdown drill back in 2013? it was like a nightmare come true ๐Ÿ˜ฉ... anyway back to this, ice detaining minors and then claiming they abandoned them kinda strains my trust in authority a bit ๐Ÿค”... schools are meant to be safe spaces for all kids, not war zones ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿค• This is so messed up! ๐Ÿšซ How are 5-year-olds and teens being dragged from their homes and classrooms like this? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ The fact that ICE was "abandoned" by Liam's dad doesn't make it any better - it just sounds like a pretty dodgy excuse to me ๐Ÿ™„. Schools should be safe spaces for everyone, not places where you have to live in fear of getting caught up in immigration drama. ๐Ÿค What's next? Are we going to start seeing ICE agents at PTA meetings and school concerts too? ๐Ÿ˜‚ I'm seriously worried about what other families are going through because of this stuff... can't we just have some peace of mind for our kids' education?! ๐Ÿ™
