80-year-old Detroit-area bakery expands - Detroit Metro Times

Local Detroit-Area Bakery Expands Operations, Hires More Workers Amid Booming Demand

A family-run bakery with over 80 years of history in the Detroit area has expanded its operations, boosting production capacity and hiring 25 more workers. The Metropolitan Baking Company, known for providing steamed hot dog buns to local coney island restaurants, has seen a significant increase in demand due to its products being served at renowned locations such as New York City's Yankee Stadium.

The bakery's recent expansion project added approximately 37,000 square feet of state-of-the-art facilities to its original location, increasing production capacity by nearly 40%. The new facilities now house the company's entire operation, including a break room and lockers for employees, most of whom come from the local community. The expansion also features improved shipping docks that will reduce the impact on neighborhood streets.

"We have an incredible, dedicated team, which is why we were confident in this latest expansion," said George Kordas, president of the Metropolitan Baking Company. "Our view is that a financially stable city can do more for its people and infrastructure, better schools and improved public safety."

The company, founded by Jim Kordas' father in 1945, has grown to produce over 240 dozen buns per minute and roughly 140 loaves of bread per minute. Its products are primarily sold under the Kordas brand name and include a range of bread products such as hot dog buns, Pullman breads, brioche buns, and Kaiser rolls.

"We have been good to Hamtramck – it's a wonderful community," Kordas said in a statement. "The last thing we want to do is slow down progress. Instead, we want to grow opportunities and take our Detroit pride to customers across the country."

idk about this... they're expanding like crazy and hiring 25 more workers πŸ€” but aren't they just gonna make more buns? 🍞️ i mean, what's the point of adding 37k sq ft of facilities if it's just gonna be all about cranking out more hot dog buns? 🚫 on the other hand... George Kordas' vision for a "financially stable city" and better schools is kinda cool 😎 especially with their community-focused approach. but let's not get ahead of ourselves, maybe they'll actually use those new facilities to innovate or something πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I don’t usually comment but... I'm so stoked for this family-run bakery 🍞️! It's amazing how they've been able to expand and hire more workers amidst all the craziness 🀯. I mean, it's not every day you hear about a local business that's thriving and contributing to the community in such a positive way πŸ’š. And the fact that most of their new hires come from the local community is just awesome πŸ‘. It shows they're really invested in making a difference in Hamtramck. Plus, who doesn't love steamed hot dog buns? 🌭️ The more I think about it, the more I'm excited for this bakery to continue growing and putting Detroit on the map! πŸ’ͺ

OMG, you guys! Think about it... this bakery just happens to expand operations at exactly the right time when all these big events are happening in NYC πŸ€”... what if they're trying to corner the market on stadium food? And 25 new workers just out of the blue? It sounds like a PR stunt to me, but is it really just about keeping up with demand or is there something fishy going on? I mean, who gets hired suddenly and starts working long hours... πŸ€‘

🍞️πŸ’ͺ Oh man, this is so cool! I'm living in detroit right now and its amazing to see a local business thrive like this. They're not just expanding their operations but also hiring more people from the community which will surely bring some economic boost to hamtramck. 80 years of history is crazy, i feel bad for jim kordas' dad that he started this amazing bakery

🍞️ just had to comment on this local Detroit bakery expanding its ops lol they must be doing something right! 25 new jobs is awesome for the community & those buns at Yankee Stadium are a game changer 🏟️

the 37k sq ft expansion sounds huge! hope they don't get too big and lose that family feel 😊

🀝 that's awesome news for the community! I'm glad they're investing in their local neighborhood with those new facilities 🏒. 25 new jobs is a big deal too, especially when it comes from a family-run business like this πŸ‘©β€πŸ’Ό. It shows that there are still people willing to put in the hard work and dedication into creating something successful 🎯. And George Kordas is totally right about Detroit being able to do better for its people and infrastructure - we need more businesses like this one stepping up to make a positive impact 🌈.

just heard about this bakery expanding 🍞😬 its not like anyone who's been to detroit lately doesn't know that everything is overpriced already 140 loaves of bread per minute thats a lot of carbs btw

Just saw this news about the Metropolitan Baking Company expanding their ops & hiring more staff πŸžοΈπŸ’Ό. Honestly, it's awesome to see a family-run business like that thriving in the D area. Their commitment to supporting local employees is pretty cool too πŸ‘. It's great to hear they're also building better facilities that'll reduce the impact on neighborhood streets 🚧.

I think George Kordas makes some valid points about Detroit having an opportunity to invest in its people and infrastructure 🀝. With a strong, stable economy like this bakery is experiencing, it could be a big boost for the community's growth. Plus, it's awesome that they're proud of their Detroit heritage & want to share that with customers nationwide πŸŒ†.
