A Detroit cigar baron’s mausoleum was stripped by thieves, but no one ever told the family - Detroit Metro Times

A local Detroit woman is outraged after discovering that her grandfather's mausoleum at the historic Woodmere Cemetery had been stripped of its copper doors and stained-glass window by thieves. Despite being the only living relative, no one from the cemetery notified Susan Burns about the theft until she came across a story about it.

Burns says she is "devastated" and furious that no one contacted her or tried to locate any surviving relatives before the damage was done. She believes that the cemetery should have taken steps to protect her family's legacy, which includes the mausoleum designed by famous architect Albert Kahn.

The theft occurred in 2012 as part of a wave of graveyard crimes at the cemetery, where thieves targeted century-old mausoleums for bronze and copper doors, gates, and other metal memorials. In recent years, the cemetery has faced criticism over its conditions, with families complaining about damaged gravestones, poor maintenance, and broken promises.

Burns is now looking for a lawyer to file a lawsuit against the cemetery owners, arguing that they should have tried to locate surviving relatives and alert them to the theft and damage. She also plans to advocate for better care and protection of historic cemeteries like Woodmere.

The story highlights the importance of preserving family legacies and cultural heritage sites, as well as the need for more effective communication and collaboration between cemetery owners, families, and authorities to prevent such incidents in the future.

🤯 I'm soooo angry about this! Like, who does that? 😡 The thought of those copper doors and stained-glass window just being stripped away from Susan's grandfather's mausoleum is heartbreaking. It's not just the monetary value of these things, it's the emotional connection and family legacy that's being lost here 🕊️. I don't blame Susan for wanting to take action – she has every right to be furious! 😤 It's really sad when historic cemeteries like Woodmere are neglected and thieves just walk in like they own the place 💔. Maybe this is a wake-up call for the cemetery owners to get their act together? 🤞

omg u gotta feel 4 susan burns lol she's literally devastated & furious that no one even notified her cuz she was the only living relative 🤯 like wut kinda security do they have at woodmere cemetery?? 😡 it's not just about the mausoleum itself, it's about preserving history & culture for future gens 👴♂️💔 i can def see why susan's calling 4 better care & protection of historic cemeteries 🚧🏞️ the state needs 2 step up their game & make sure these kinds of crimes don't happen again 💪

I mean... 🤷‍♀️ come on, I'm so mad that someone stole from her grandpa's mausoleum, but at the same time, I don't think the cemetery should've been expecting Susan Burns to be like, super invested in it since she's the only living relative and all. 🤑 But still, shouldn't they've tried to reach out to her or something before selling off grandma grandpa's copper doors and stained-glass window? That just seems kinda shady. 😒 On the other hand, I get why Susan's all bent out of shape – it's like, family stuff, you know? 🤝

I just saw the craziest video of a sloth taking a nap on a tree branch 🐢😴... like, I don't know how it even hangs there without falling off 😂... anyway, it got me thinking about Woodmere Cemetery and how people can be so thoughtless. I mean, think about if someone came to your grandpa's grave and just started messing with stuff that wasn't theirs 🤷‍♀️... wouldn't you freak out? 😱... but I guess when there are a lot of gravestones and nothing else to protect them, it's easy for people to get careless 🤦‍♂️... anyway, gotta give props to the lady who's fighting for her family's legacy though 💪

😒 I gotta say, I'm not surprised that no one reached out to Susan Burns before the theft happened... think about it, she's the only living relative, right? It's still pretty harsh though - I mean, can't you just imagine how upsetting it must be for her to find out like this online? 🤕 And yeah, the cemetery should've taken steps to protect that family's legacy. Like, come on! Albert Kahn designed that mausoleum - it's a piece of history! 🏛️ I don't think they're off the hook just because they didn't know who else was related... lawsuits are always an option, but maybe there should be some sort of protocol in place for when a family member dies and their loved ones aren't around to take care of things? It's just common courtesy, you know? 🤷‍♀️

Ugh, can't believe what happened at that cemetery 🤯. Like, they just strip the copper doors and stained glass window from some poor woman's grandfather's mausoleum without even trying to reach out to anyone? It's devastating 😔. And to think it was supposed to be protected by the people in charge... what a disaster 😡. I mean, I get that old cemeteries can be neglected, but this is just crazy! The fact that they're now facing criticism over their conditions and poor maintenance, maybe they should've taken care of this sooner? 🤦‍♀️. Susan Burns is totally right to want a lawsuit, it's only fair that the cemetery owners take responsibility for this mess 💼. And I'm all for her advocating for better care and protection of historic sites... we need more people like her! 👍

ugh this is so unfair 🤯 I had a similar experience with my family's old piano that got stolen from our school's auditorium during a concert (yeah it was a disaster 😂). Anyway, back to this - I think cemeteries need to step up their game in terms of security and communication. It's just basic human decency to let families know if something like this happens to a loved one's grave site. The fact that they didn't even try to reach out to Susan is literally heartbreaking 😭 and now she's left to fight for what's rightfully hers. I'm all for advocating for better care and protection of historic sites, but can't we just make it happen without having to sue people? 🤔

🚨 The grave concern of this situation is that our ancestors' legacy was taken away from us without a thought or word... "The dead are not our brothers, but friends whose lives we remember with gratitude and respect." 💔

🤕 This is a total rip off! I mean, can you imagine if someone just went into your home without permission? It's like that for Susan Burns, but with her grandfather's final resting place 🚫💔. She's right to be mad and wants justice. Cemetery owners gotta do better to protect these kinds of things. Maybe they should've contacted some relatives or something... I don't know, it just seems like a total oversight 😐.

🤕😱 this is soooo wrong 🚫💔 my heart goes out 2 Susan Burns & her family 💕 she's totally entitled 2 be upset 😤 no one should've notified her before telling everyone else 📣 it's like they just took everything without asking 🤯 how could they do that to a loved one's memory? 😢 the copper doors & stained glass window were such an important part of the mausoleum design 🌈 albert kahn would be so disappointed 😔

🤔 I think Susan Burns is being kinda harsh on the cemetery owners. I mean, they're already struggling to maintain this historic site, so it's not like they had a 100% guarantee that her grandfather's mausoleum wouldn't get nicked off 🤑. And what about all those other graves and monuments that are in better shape than hers? Is she gonna sue 'em too? 🤷‍♂️ It just seems like a bit of a stretch, you know? 💸

omg that's so heartbreaking 🤕 she's right though - can't believe no one checked on her grandfather's mausoleum before stealing it from her like a ghost... i mean how do you even do that kinda thing? 😒 cemetery owners need to step up their game and prioritize preserving the history, not just collecting copper doors and stained glass 🤦‍♀️ burns is totally justified in taking action and advocating for better care - woodmere cemetery should be ashamed of themselves 🙄

:( Copper doors & stained-glass window gone! 🤕 That's like taking a piece of history away from Susan Burns and her family 📚️. I can see why she's devastated 😔. It's not just about the monetary value, it's about the sentimental worth 💕. The cemetery should've done more to protect her grandpa's legacy 👑. Maybe a security camera or more vigilant staff would've made a difference 🤝. Susan's right to seek justice and advocate for better care of historic cemeteries 🌟. We need to raise awareness about preserving our cultural heritage sites 💡.

😱 I'm reading this thread about 5 days after it got posted and I just have to weigh in... The fact that no one from the cemetery contacted Susan until she saw a news article about it is just mind-blowing 🤯 What kind of negligence is that?! It's not like the cemetery was expecting her to come looking for her grandfather's mausoleum or anything. I get why she's upset, but can't we all just try to do better? Maybe there are systems in place at Woodmere that aren't being followed or something, but it seems pretty clear that some communication is missing here 🤔

Ugh 🤦‍♀️, can't believe they just went ahead and did that without even trying to reach out to Susan! I mean, come on, it's her grandfather's mausoleum we're talking about here... 🙅‍♂️ They should've at least sent a notice or something, you know? It's not like the cemetery is just going to magically call everyone in the family and say "hey, your stuff got stolen"... 📞

And yeah, it's super frustrating that Susan has to go out of her way to find out what happened. I mean, she's the only living relative, so you'd think they'd at least try to contact her or something... 🤔 It's just basic human decency, right?

Anyway, hope Susan gets justice and can help improve things for other cemeteries like Woodmere... 💼

omg this is so sad 😱 i mean i get it from a business perspective but come on 🙄 how could they not notify any relatives before stripping away all that history & significance from susan burns mausoleum? it's like they just took something that doesn't belong to them & decided to profit from it 💸 anyway gotta give credit to susan for being super proactive about getting justice 👏 and hopefully her efforts will lead to better protection of historic cemeteries so we can all preserve our family legacies 🌿💕

🚨😱 this is so messed up! i mean, you'd think that a fam's mausoleum would be off limits or at least have some kinda security lol. but nope, thieves just waltz in and take whatever they want... like, what even happens to the copper doors? can't they sell it on the black market or something? 😂 anyway, susan burns sounds super reasonable for wanting justice & better care of these historic sites. i feel her fam's legacy is worth more than some copper doors 🏠💔

🤕😡 I cant believe what happened to Susan's grandpas mausoleum 😭 it's like they just took whatever they wanted without even asking 🤑 the copper doors and stained glass window are super valuable 🎨💎 and now they're gone forever 🔥

I feel so bad for Susan, she must be going thru a lot of emotions right now 🤯😔 I think cemetery owners should do way more to protect these historic sites 🏰👮‍♀️ not just leave them open to thieves 😳 and families like Susans have the right to know what's happening with their loved ones 💕

The law needs to change ASAP ⚖️💪 so that families can't be left in the dark when something happens to a family member's grave 🌱👻 it's just not fair 😠 I'm sending my thoughts and vibes to Susan for her loss 👋💗

i cant believe this is happening to susan burns! thats so unfair that no one contacted her or tried to find any other relatives before the copper doors and stained glass window were stolen its like they just took what was important to her family without even thinking about it 🤯. i think its crazy that the cemetery knew what happened but didnt do anything until she found out through a news article thats not good enough, susan burns deserves better than that. woodmere cemetery needs to step up their game and take responsibility for protecting historic sites like this one
