A flight to Europe U-turned after a passenger's midair fork attack

A mid-air fork attack on a Lufthansa flight from Chicago to Frankfurt has led to the U-turn of the plane, forcing it to land in Boston.

On Saturday, a passenger allegedly attacked two teenagers with a metal fork during the meal service. The crew then tried to subdue him, but he slapped another passenger. One of the teens suffered a cut to the back of his head.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows forks in carry-on bags on commercial flights, but utensils with a sharpened edge or a pointed tip that could be used as a stabbing tool may be confiscated.

Praneeth Kumar Usiripalli, a 28-year-old Indian national, has been charged with "assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm" aboard an aircraft under US jurisdiction. He faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

Unruly behavior on flights has surged since the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, there were nearly 6,000 cases of unruly passengers - six times the number reported in the previous year. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued nearly $21 million in fines to unruly passengers between 2020 and 2024.

The worst year was 2021, when the FAA reported nearly 6,000 cases of unruly behavior on flights. This is more than double the pre-pandemic levels. So far in 2025, the FAA has reported about 1,200 incidents of unruly passenger behavior.

A recent incident on a Chicago-bound American Airlines plane forced it to turn back to Connecticut after a passenger attempted to drag a flight attendant down the aisle. In early October, a United Airlines passenger tried to open the exit door after landing in Houston, triggering the emergency slide.

πŸ€”πŸ˜± Oh man, this is crazy! A fork attack on a plane?! I don't get it. Wasn't he just trying to eat his dinner? 🍴 I'm so sorry about that one kid who got hurt tho... a cut to the head from a fork is super scary 😷. And now this guy's gonna be in trouble, 10 years in prison? That seems kinda harsh. I mean, I get it, safety first and all that, but like what was he thinking?! 🀯 Did anyone else see anything suspicious before it happened? Like, was there someone around him who could've stopped it or something? πŸ€” And btw, have you guys heard of the TSA's utensil policy on planes? It makes sense I guess, but still... πŸ˜‚

🚨 The TSA's lenient approach to utensils on flights is a slippery slope. I mean, what's next? Allowing sharp objects or even knives on planes? It's like they're saying, "Hey, if it's not sharp, it's okay!" πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ But seriously, if we can't regulate carry-on items, how are we going to keep our skies safe? It's a classic case of "too little, too late" with the FAA. They need to step up their game and issue stricter fines for unruly passengers. I mean, $21 million in fines is just a drop in the bucket compared to the potential damage these incidents can cause. We need more accountability, not less! 🚫

Ugh, this is getting out of hand πŸ™„. Like I'm sure the TSA should've checked that fork for safety before letting it on the plane, but still... what's with all these incidents on flights lately?! 🚫 You'd think people would be more considerate after being stuck in a metal tube with strangers for hours 🀯. It's not exactly rocket science to keep your hands and utensils to yourself πŸ˜‚. And another thing, 10 years in prison over a fork attack? Come on... that's just excessive ⚠️.

omg what's going on with these flights?! 🚫😱 i mean, forks are literally allowed in carry-on bags now, but still... who brings a metal fork on a plane?! πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ and like, can't they just calm down or something? 😩 this guy Praneeth Kumar Usiripalli is getting charged with up to 10 years in prison if he gets convicted... that's insane! πŸ’₯ and it's not like he's the first one... there are so many cases of unruly passengers on flights lately 🚫. i guess the pandemic had something to do with it, but still... can't we just have a chill flight for once? 😴 anyway, at least the plane turned around and landed in Boston instead of Frankfurt... that would've been super scary! 😱

omg what's going on with these planes?? 🚨😱 1,200 incidents of unruly passenger behavior so far this year is crazy! and the number was like six times more in 2021?! that's wild. i mean, i get it, people are stressed and anxious from covid still but a metal fork attack? that's not cool at all 🀯. did the person who attacked the teens have a medical condition or something? and what's with the TSA allowing forks on planes though? shouldn't they be more strict about that? πŸ€”

I don't get why we're even surprised about this anymore 🀯. Unruly behavior on flights has been going up since COVID-19 and it's not like we haven't seen this before. I mean, back in 2021, there were already over 6,000 cases of unruly passengers and now it's more than double the pre-pandemic levels? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It's just crazy to think about how many people are getting on planes with attitude. Like, what even is the point of having a TSA if they can't keep an eye out for this stuff? 🚫 And now there's this latest incident where someone tried to drag a flight attendant down the aisle... it's like we're living in some kind of bad movie. 😱

OMG 🀯🚫 you guys, have u seen these stats? Since COVID-19, unruly behavior on flights has increased by like 100% πŸ“ˆ! In 2021, there were almost 6k cases of unruly passengers 😱, which is crazy. And the FAA fined over $21M in 2020-2024 πŸ€‘. Now, it's not just about the money, it's about safety too ⚠️. I'm all for standing up against bad behavior, but a metal fork? Really? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ What's next? A butter knife? πŸ˜‚ Anywayz, Praneeth Kumar Usiripalli faces up to 10 yrs in prison & $250k fine if convicted... talk about a wild ride 😲.

Dude, can you believe this? Some dude forks over on a plane and now he's gonna have to pay the price πŸ˜‚πŸ’Έ. I mean, who tries to stab someone with a fork mid-flight? That's just basic common sense... or should I say, lack thereof πŸ™„. Anyways, 10 years in prison for this guy? Yeah, that's about right πŸ‘Š. But seriously, have you seen the prices of flights lately? $250k fine is no joke πŸ’Έ. And now they're saying unruly behavior on planes has surged since COVID-19? No surprise there 🀣. I mean, who didn't get a little stir-crazy during all that lockdown business 😴? Anyway, back to this fork guy... I guess you could say he's having a real "tine" of trouble ahead πŸ€ͺ

Ugh, can't believe this guy Praneeth got that lucky πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. Fork attack on mid-air? Like, what even is that? And the TSA knows about this but didn't do anything till it happened? Come on! They should've checked his bag way before they let him board. Anyway, 10 years in prison doesn't seem enough for someone who could hurt two teens like that 😱. It's getting crazy up in here, with all these unruly passengers and whatnot... Like, can't we just chill? πŸ™„

🀯 Can't believe this dude was allowed on the plane with a fork in his carry-on! I mean, what's next? A Swiss Army knife in your purse? πŸ—‘οΈ It's one thing to be a little carried away during meal service, but seriously, assault? That's a whole different level. And yeah, TSA is all like "oh, it's okay, forks are fine, just don't stab anyone"... πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ 10 years in prison is way too lenient for this guy. I guess that's the problem with not enforcing the rules as strictly - people start to think they can do whatever they want on a plane! πŸ˜’

😱 this guy's actions are insane, can't believe he had a fork on him just waiting for something like that to happen... 🀯 10 years in prison is probably too lenient if you ask me, especially with how violent his actions were πŸ’” and those poor teens 😭 what was going through his mind? I mean, we all have bad days but dragging a flight attendant down the aisle or opening an exit door mid-flight? that's just crazy talk 🚫

I mean, what's going on with these flights lately? 🀯 It's like people have lost all sense of respect for others on planes. I'm not surprised it happened again though, with the TSA allowing forks in carry-on bags and all. You'd think common sense would prevail, but nope! πŸ™„ And now this guy faces up to 10 years in prison? That's harsh, but at least someone's holding him accountable.

It's crazy how unruly behavior on flights has surged since COVID-19. I guess people were just so pent-up and stressed that they lashed out on planes. But now it's like the norm or something? πŸ˜’ The FAA fined over $21 million in 2020-2024, and it's still not enough to deter these incidents. Maybe we need to rethink our air travel policies altogether... or at least get some better training for flight attendants. πŸ€”

🚫 Ugh, this is so frustrating! I mean, I get that people can lose it on planes, but who carries a fork?! 🀯 Like what's next? Knives and axes?! 😱 The TSA needs to revisit their carry-on rules ASAP! And 10 years in prison for this guy? That's extreme. Maybe some de-escalation training or counseling would be more effective than throwing the book at him. All I know is that flight attendants are already stressed out enough, they don't need to deal with that kind of craziness on top of everything else. ✈️
