Academics who say they are 'pro-white' and have 'ethnic conception' of Australia turn spotlight on Sydney's Campion College

A Sydney Catholic College Under Fire Over White Nationalism Comments

Campion College, a small private institution in western Sydney, is facing an investigation by the Higher Education Quality and Standards Agency (Teqsa) over comments made by two of its prominent academics, Stephen McInerney and Associate Prof Stephen Chavura. The pair have been accused of promoting white nationalism and making racist remarks.

McInerney, a dean of studies at Campion College, has described himself as an "Australian nationalist" and has advocated for the White Australia policy, which aims to limit non-European immigration. He has also encouraged supporters of the White Australia party (WAP), a neo-Nazi organization led by Thomas Sewell, and has described European peoples as needing their own homelands.

Chavura, a senior lecturer at Campion College, has been accused of promoting Anglo-Celtic nationalism and calling for white supremacy. He has written on social media that "Anglo-Celtic" people should be the "overwhelming demographic majority" in Australia, an idea he describes as an "ethnic conception of the Australian nation and culture".

The comments have sparked outrage among critics, with the Sydney Morning Herald reporting that Chavura had compared a neo-Nazi rally to a "political speech". The college president, Paul Morrissey, has defended the freedom of speech of its staff members, saying that a commitment to academic freedom is meaningless if it doesn't extend to people who say unpopular or offensive things.

However, the investigation by Teqsa has raised questions about whether Campion College is meeting its obligations under the Higher Education Standards Framework. The chief executive of Teqsa, Mary Russell, said that the agency would consider taking action if there was evidence that the college was not complying with the framework.

The controversy has also sparked a wider debate about racism and white nationalism in Australian universities. Mehreen Faruqi, deputy Greens leader and higher education spokesperson, has condemned the comments as "shocking" and called for an end to public funding for institutions that promote such ideologies.

Campion College's powerful backers have come under scrutiny, with former Liberal minister Zed Seselja and university graduate Joseph de Bruyn facing criticism over their own views on abortion and racism. The college has also received significant government funding, including $10 million in federal funding, which has raised questions about the role of politics in academic institutions.

As the investigation into Campion College continues, it remains to be seen whether the institution will face any consequences for promoting white nationalism and racist ideologies. However, the controversy has highlighted the need for greater scrutiny of universities and their commitments to diversity and inclusion.

I'm low-key shocked that a college is getting funding with this kinda vibe 🀯! Like, I get it, academic freedom is one thing but come on, not everyone agrees with you just 'cause you're an Aussie nationalist or whatever... πŸ™„ What's next? Are they gonna start teaching the importance of being a good sport and respecting others' opinions in gym class too? πŸ‹οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

I mean, seriously though, this is no laughing matter. If Campion College is promoting white nationalism and racism, that's a major red flag. But let's not forget who's funding these institutions - the gov! πŸ’Έ It raises some serious questions about how that money affects the curriculum and campus culture. Like, are they gonna start teaching "How to Be a Good White Aussie" instead of actual science and history? πŸ“š

Anywayz, I'm all for free speech and all but not when it's used to spread hate and intolerance πŸ€•. It's time for these institutions to step up their game and promote diversity, inclusion, and respect for all... or else! πŸ‘Š

this is just wrong 🀯, i cant believe a private college is allowed to spout hate speech like that in australia. its not about academic freedom, its about teaching kids good values and respect for all people. im worried about the impact this has on our young minds and the country as a whole. what happened to the values of equality and fairness? we need more institutions like monash uni which promotes diversity and inclusion πŸŒŽπŸ’–

πŸ˜• this is so sad πŸ€• campion college needs to take responsibility for what's being said by its staff and show it cares about people from all backgrounds. academic freedom is important but not when it comes at the expense of hurtful words and hate speech πŸ’”. universities have a duty to promote inclusivity and respect, and this isn't just about Campion College or Australia - it's a global issue that needs addressing 🌎. the funding they receive should be conditional on them upholding certain values, you know? πŸ‘€

πŸ€” I think its really concerning when public institutions promote hateful ideologies like white nationalism 🚫. Campion College's comments have sparked outrage among critics and it's not just about freedom of speech πŸ—£οΈ, but also about the impact on students and staff from diverse backgrounds πŸ‘₯.

I'm worried that if universities don't take a strong stance against racism and hate speech, it could lead to a toxic environment for marginalized communities πŸ€•. The fact that the college's powerful backers are under scrutiny is a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done πŸ’ͺ.

We need to have an open conversation about what it means to be inclusive and diverse in our universities πŸ“š. Campion College's actions have highlighted the need for greater accountability and a commitment to promoting inclusivity and respect πŸ‘.

I'm really troubled by this whole thing πŸ€•. It's like, you got these people in positions of power making comments that are straight up racist and nationalist, and nobody's doing anything about it. I mean, sure, they're saying they believe in freedom of speech and all that, but what about the harm they're causing? White nationalism is not just a bunch of empty words, it's real-life hate speech that can lead to some pretty dark places.

And what really gets my goat is that people are defending these guys as if they're somehow victims of being called out. Newsflash: they're not innocent bystanders, they're the ones spewing all this hate and intolerance. And now they're expecting everyone else to be okay with it? No way 🚫.

I think this whole thing highlights a bigger problem - we need universities and other institutions to take these kinds of ideologies seriously and speak out against them, not just wring their hands and say "oh, let's have a respectful debate". That's not how you combat hate speech, that's how you enable it. We need some real accountability here, and we need it now πŸ’ͺ

lol what's going on at this college 🀯 like is it 2002 or something?! seriously though, can't ppl just have differing opinions without resorting to white nationalism & racism? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ i mean, im not saying we shouldn't have freedom of speech, but there's a fine line between expressing an opinion & promoting hate speech. and btw, who needs all this drama when we've got bigger issues to tackle like climate change & inequality in education πŸŒŽπŸ’Έ

omg u gotta believe this is getting outta hand!!! 🀯 these ppl at Campion College r spreading hate like it's nobodies business! Stephen McInerney & Associate Prof Stephen Chavura r basically giving white nationalism a platform, promoting racist ideologies & encouraging supporters of the WAP (which btw is a neo-Nazi org) πŸš«πŸ‘Ž. its NOT okay to normalize racism or white supremacy in any form #NoToRacism #NotMyU #AcademicFreedomMatters

omg, can you believe this?! they're profiting from a toxic ideology like it's no big deal 🀯. it's not just about free speech, it's about creating a safe space for people of color and indigenous Australians. the fact that these two professors are getting away with spreading hate speech is a major concern 🚨. what's next? will they start recruiting neo-Nazis to their staff? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. this college needs to be held accountable for its actions, especially since it's receiving millions of dollars in government funding πŸ’Έ. we need to make sure our universities are promoting inclusivity and diversity, not segregation and hate πŸ”’.

πŸ˜’ Campus life is getting more complicated πŸ˜• ...some of these profs seem like they're from a different century πŸ™„...white nationalism just isn't cool anymore πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ...can't we just focus on learning stuff instead of spewing hate speech? πŸ“šπŸ’‘

can't believe this is still happening in australia πŸ˜•. two dudes at a catholic college think they can just spew racist comments and get away with it? no way. i mean, what's next? are we gonna start funding schools that promote hate speech? 🀯 the idea of "academic freedom" is one thing, but not when it comes at the expense of marginalized groups. campion college needs to take responsibility for these ppl's actions and apologize ASAP. and as for teqsa, can't they just do their job already? ⏱️ the fact that these people have access to government funding is just ridiculous πŸ€‘. we need to make sure our universities are promoting inclusivity and diversity, not hate speech and white supremacy πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ.

🀯 this is so messed up what's going on at Campion College these comments are totally unacceptable and I'm not surprised that a lot of people are speaking out against it πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. as an institution, they have a responsibility to promote inclusivity and respect for all students and staff, regardless of their background or beliefs 🌎. it's concerning to see powerful individuals like Zed Seselja coming under scrutiny for their own views on abortion and racism πŸ€”.

I think it's time for universities to take a hard look at their own commitment to diversity and inclusion πŸ“š. we need more institutions that value equality, respect, and empathy above all else πŸ’–. and if Campion College can't meet these standards, then maybe they shouldn't be receiving government funding πŸ€‘.

πŸ€• this is so messed up πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ gotta be super careful what's said in academia can't let ppl spread hate like that πŸ‘Ž campion college needs 2 take responsibility 4 promoting white nationalism & racist ideologies 🚫 don't think the college pres should say staff r free 2 say unpopular stuff 4 all ppl πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ need 2 consider how it affects others too πŸ’¬ gotta keep an eye on government funding 4 institutions like this πŸ‘€ cant let hate speech be funded by taxpayer $$ πŸ’Έ

Ugh, this is like, so messed up 🀯... I mean, who lets people spew that kind of hate speech on campus? It's not just that they're promoting white nationalism and racism, it's also the fact that they're basically trying to erase everyone else from the conversation. And then the college president is all like "free speech" and "academic freedom", but what about the right to feel safe and included? That can't be just ignored πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ... I'm not sure what's more disturbing, the fact that these comments were made in the first place or that people are actually defending them. It's like, come on, guys, get a clue πŸ’‘... Anyway, I hope Teqsa does its job and puts an end to this nonsense once and for all πŸ‘Š

🀯 can't believe a private college in Sydney is being run by ppl who think they're above the law just cuz they've got degrees πŸ“š meanwhile, it's white nationalists making racist comments on social media and these ppl are just like "oh, we need to protect freedom of speech" πŸ™„ like what about freedom from hate? shouldnt ppl be held accountable for promoting ideologies that harm others? 🀝

πŸ€• this is so messed up ... how can ppl make comments like that & get away w/it in a uni setting? its not just about freedom of speech, its about promoting hate & exclusionary ideologies. i mean, what's next? schools teaching kids that they're superior 2 others cuz of their skin colour or ethnicity? 🚫 cant we have more inclusive spaces where ppl feel welcome & valued?

πŸ€” I mean, come on... how can a college like that even exist in 2025? It's just unacceptable that they're promoting this kind of white nationalist nonsense. It's not even subtle anymore - McInerney and Chavura are basically shouting it from the rooftops. And for what? So they can get government funding and back from powerful people? It's just wrong.

And what really gets my goat is when people like Paul Morrissey say that academic freedom means you can say whatever you want, no matter how hurtful or racist it is. That's not true - there are boundaries, folks! We need to be holding institutions like Campion College accountable for promoting hate speech and discriminatory ideologies.

It's time for some real scrutiny of our universities and their commitment to diversity and inclusion. Mehreen Faruqi is right on the money with her call for an end to public funding for institutions that promote racism. Let's see if the powers that be will finally step up and take action against Campion College. 🚫

😬 this is seriously concerning, especially with that 10 million dollars in federal funding... how can they just promote hate speech and get away with it? πŸ€” i know campion college says they value academic freedom, but that's gotta be balanced with not spreading racist ideologies πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ if universities are gonna give more power to their staff, they gotta make sure those staff members aren't using that power to hurt people. the fact that some of these academics have ties to white nationalist groups is super sketchy... i just hope Teqsa does its job and holds campion college accountable 🚫
