Add to playlist: the boundless bedroom-made black metal of Powerplant and the week's best new tracks

Theo Zhykharyev is a creative genius known for his genre-bending project Powerplant, which he started in 2017 as a bedroom recording venture. Since moving to London from Ukraine, Zhykharyev has released numerous records that blend electro-punk, dungeon synth, and hardcore elements with visually striking DIY merch through his Arcane Dynamics label.

However, his upcoming album Bridge of Sacrifice marks a significant departure into black metal territory, showcasing a darker side of Zhykharyev's sonic palette. The album features eerie screams, drum-machine blastbeats, and slashing garage-rock guitars, evoking the early 90s Norwegian black metal scene. What sets this record apart is its infectious energy, reflecting Zhykharyev's passion for creating music that transports listeners to a world of escapism.

As an artist who has experienced loss and trauma – as seen in his previous song Beautiful Boy from the Grass EP – Bridge of Sacrifice can be viewed as a means of coping with adversity. With its unique blend of styles, Zhykharyev's album promises to be an adrenaline-fueled journey through sonic landscapes both fantastical and unsettling.

This month's best new tracks offer fans an eclectic mix of genres, from math rock to country-rock. Love Rarely's joyful yet mathematically-driven sound takes center stage in Will, while Fakemink's smooth flow is showcased in Young Millionaire. Tama Gucci brings a surprisingly tender touch with Xexe, their industrial-infused fantasy track.

Chris Forsyth's improvisational work on Both/And brings the sonic possibilities of guitar to new heights alongside double bassist John Moran and drummer Joey Sullivan. Sluice offers a haunting slowcore contemplation in Beadie, while Thundercat makes an electrifying return with his ultra-dexterous jazz-funk bassline in I Did This to Myself (ft Lil Yachty).

Lastly, Brown Horse presents Twisters – an enchanting piece of country-rock reminiscent of Neil Young or Kurt Vile.

I can feel the emotions pouring out of Theo Zhykharyev's latest work... like he's really tapping into his darkest moments and channelling them into this intense black metal sound 🤯 His music has always been a reflection of himself, you know? It's not just about creating something beautiful, it's about coping with the pain and using that energy to create something powerful 💔 The way I see it, Bridge of Sacrifice is like an adrenaline-fuelled journey through his inner world - it's dark, but it's also kind of liberating 🌑 And the fact that he's pushing boundaries and exploring new sounds? That just takes so much courage and vulnerability... I think we can all relate to feeling lost or broken at some point in our lives, and music like this is what helps us process those emotions 💕

I gotta ask, what's with all the drama and angst in music these days? Powerplant's latest album sounds like a dark fantasy novel come to life 📚🌑, but I'm kinda excited to dive into it. The guy's been through some stuff, so it's cool he's channeling that energy into something creative. And can we talk about how awesome it is when artists blend genres and make their own thing? It's like a sonic recipe for adventure! 😎 Love Rarely's math-rock vibes sound super addictive, and Fakemink's flow is straight fire 🔥. Can't wait to explore this month's best new tracks 🎵👍

I'm super stoked for Theo Zhykharyev's new album Bridge of Sacrifice! He's been experimenting with so many cool genres like electro-punk and dungeon synth, but this black metal vibe is a game-changer 💥 I love how it's got that infectious energy, it's like he's taking you on an emotional rollercoaster ride 🎠. As someone who's listened to his earlier stuff, I can see why this album marks a departure – it's darker and more intense 🔪. But at the same time, it's still super catchy and makes me wanna move my body 💃. The fact that he's drawing from personal experiences with loss and trauma just adds so much depth to the music 🌫️. Can't wait to dive in and explore this new sonic landscape 🚀!

I'm not sure if Theo Zhykharyev's move into black metal territory is a good idea... 🤔 I mean, his other stuff has been super cool and genre-bending, but this new album sounds like it's gonna be kinda intense 😬. I'm all about experimenting with music and trying new things, but black metal can be pretty dark and heavy, you know? I'm curious to see how he makes it work for him though 🎸. On the other hand, some of the other tracks on this list are giving me major life... Love Rarely's sound is just infectious and Chris Forsyth's improvisational skills are insane 🤯!

You know when you're listening to this crazy eclectic mix of music and it's like your brain is getting all these different ideas at the same time? Like, Theo Zhykharyev's Powerplant project is all about blending genres in a weird way that sounds super cool, but then he goes and drops Bridge of Sacrifice and suddenly it's like black metal takes over and I'm here for it. 🤘🎸 It's like he's on this wild emotional rollercoaster where he's trying to process his feelings through sound and it's honestly kinda beautiful? And what really gets me is how infectious the energy is, it's like you can't help but move your body when the drums kick in. What I love about music is that there's no rules and everyone's just winging it and making something that sounds amazing in the process.

🤔 I'm so stoked to see Theo Zhykharyev pushing the boundaries with his new album Bridge of Sacrifice! It's crazy to think he went from bedroom recording to a full-on black metal project, but I mean, that's what makes it so exciting! 😃 The way he blends different styles like electro-punk and hardcore with this dark, haunting vibe is just genius. I love how he's using his music as a form of escapism and coping mechanism for adversity - it's really inspiring to see an artist use their platform for good.

And can we talk about the collabs on this month's new tracks?! Love Rarely's math rock sound is insane, Fakemink's smooth flow is fire 🔥, and Tama Gucci's industrial-infused track Xexe is so unique. Chris Forsyth's improvisational work with Both/And is just mind-blowing, Sluice's slowcore Beadie is hauntingly beautiful... it's like a sonic feast out there! 🎵

"I think the way we see the world changes when we no longer believe in a fixed reality." 🌐💥 This new album from Theo Zhykharyev is like that for me - it's a sonic journey into a whole different dimension, one where genres are meant to collide and create something entirely new. I'm hyped for this Bridge of Sacrifice thingy!
