Andrew Clements, Guardian's classical music critic, dies aged 75

British Classical Music Legend Passes Away at 75

The classical music world has lost a cherished voice when renowned critic Andrew Clements passed away on Sunday at the age of 75, following a prolonged bout of illness. For an impressive three decades, Clements served as The Guardian's chief music critic, leaving an indelible mark on the publication and earning the respect of his peers.

With unwavering dedication, Clements traversed various genres of classical music in his reviews, offering insightful commentary that not only showcased his profound knowledge but also demonstrated a deep love for the art form. His unyielding commitment to contemporary music was particularly notable, as he skillfully bridged the gap between established and emerging composers.

Throughout his illustrious career, Clements championed several prominent figures, including Harrison Birtwistle, Hans Abrahamsen, Oliver Knussen, and Mark-Anthony Turnage. His tireless advocacy played a significant role in ensuring their work gained widespread recognition among critics and musical administrators alike.

A solo piano aficionado, Clements was particularly fond of the late Romanian musician Radu Lupu, frequently expressing his admiration for Lupu's performances. Conversely, Clements' eclectic interests extended beyond music, encompassing ornithology, entomology, and horticulture – an observation that often caught his colleagues off guard.

Beneath his tough exterior, Clements revealed a kind and generous personality. His support for fellow critics was unwavering, as were his willingness to offer praise, patience when needed, and incisive analysis. What's more, he never hesitated to poke fun at himself – an attribute that endeared him to those who knew him.

Reflecting on Clements' passing, Katharine Viner, The Guardian's editor-in-chief, described him as a "voice with the utmost passion and precision" whose reviews "were always illuminating and a joy to read." As the classical music world mourns his loss, it's clear that Andrew Clements left an enduring legacy – one that will be cherished by critics, musicians, and enthusiasts alike.

another legend gone 🌎💔, but their impact lives on in the reviews they wrote 📝, still giving us chills to this day 😏. and it's cool how they balanced being super knowledgeable about classical music with being down-to-earth about other stuff they liked 🐦🐝... anyway, clemens was a master of his craft 💪, so we'll miss him 🙏

Man I'm feeling so sad about this 🙈. Andrew Clements was literally the ultimate music critic. He knew his stuff and wasn't afraid to share it. Loved how he wasn't just stuck on period pieces but actually cared about newer composers too. Plus, can we talk about how cool is that he had a whole other life outside of music? Like, ornithology and entomology? That's like me being into video games and still loving Pokémon 😂. What I love most though is his kindness and generosity. He wasn't just tough on others but also super supportive. Rest in peace, Andrew Clements 🌹

😔 this is so sad news... 75 is old but he was still working like crazy till the end 💪🏼. I used to love reading his reviews in The Guardian back in the day 📰. He had such a unique voice and always knew how to make you feel something about a piece of music 🎵. I loved how he'd praise some composers while being brutal on others, it was like getting a real dose of truth 💯. And yeah, the man had so many interests outside of music, I mean who else can say they're into ornithology and entomology too? 🦅🐜. Rest in peace Andrew Clements, you were definitely one of the greatest music critics of all time 👏.

I'm so sad to hear about the passing of Andrew Clements 🎶😔. He was such a legendary figure in the classical music world and his reviews were always so insightful and passionate ❤️. I've often found myself getting lost in his words on The Guardian's website, feeling like he was speaking directly to me 💫. His love for music and its many facets is truly inspiring 🌈. As someone who values mindfulness and self-care, I admire how Clements' life outside of music reflected a deep appreciation for nature & the simple things 🐝🌿. Let's take a moment to appreciate his contributions to classical music and remember him as a kind soul with a heart full of love ❤️🙏

aww man this is sad news 🤕, only 75 tho? feels like he was just getting started with all the new classical music geniuses out there... loved how he always kept it real no matter what genre he was reviewing 😂 his appreciation for Radu Lupu was everything ❤️ anyway, can we get a playlist in his honor pls?

omg just heard about Andrew Clements... i cant even imagine our school music teacher trying to give us reviews like that lol anyway what i was thinking is how our music teachers make those long reviews sound so formal but if they were on social media or something it would be a whole different story idk maybe he'd be more fun on tiktok 🤣😂

Man oh man... 75 is old for someone who still had so much love for music 😔. I'm kinda surprised he didn't review more of the new classical stuff 🎵. Back in his day, they used to have these iconic music magazines like The Wire and NME that were so influential... nowadays it's all about online reviews and social media 📱. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's great that he had a massive following on Twitter and whatnot, but sometimes I think we lost something special when music criticism shifted to a more digital format 🤔. Anyway, it's always sad when someone who means so much to the industry passes away 💔.

😔 this is such sad news, cant believe another legend has passed away 🎶 u know what really gets me tho? his love for music was so pure & genuine... i mean, who else can make you wanna listen 2 that one composer or piece u never understood b4? anyway, the classical music world is gonna miss him 4 sure 😢 but its great 2 hear all these amazing things ppl are sayin about him 🙌
