Are you limiting the time you spend online? We'd like to hear from you

Decline of Social Media: A New Era of Digital Detox?

The world has witnessed a significant shift in our online habits, with millions of people cutting back on their social media usage. According to a recent study by digital audience insights company GWI, adults spent 2 hours and 20 minutes per day on social platforms at the end of 2024 – nearly 10% less than in 2022.

This decline is particularly notable among young people, who have been at the forefront of social media usage for years. The study analyzed data from over 250,000 adults across more than 50 countries and found that social media usage has peaked, with a noticeable decrease in recent times.

So, what prompted this sudden shift? Is it boredom, annoyance, or something else entirely? Many have taken to deleting accounts or limiting their time on social media, citing reasons ranging from information overload to the need for digital detox. But how do these individuals manage their newfound free time?

By cutting back on social media, people are rediscovering the joy of boredom – a concept that has been largely absent in our digitally-driven lives. "I was fed up with the constant stream of 'advice' and polarising content," says one respondent. "Deleting social media has allowed me to focus on myself and my own interests."

For others, the decision to limit social media usage is driven by a desire for digital detox. "I was spending hours scrolling through my feeds every day, but it wasn't bringing me any joy," says another respondent. "Since I deleted social media, I've taken up reading, hiking, and other hobbies that bring me happiness."

The impact of this shift is multifaceted. On the one hand, people are taking back control of their digital lives and creating space for more meaningful activities. On the other hand, there's a risk that social media will make a comeback – perhaps even stronger than before.

As we continue to navigate the complexities of digital life, it's clear that our online habits are evolving rapidly. By sharing their stories and experiences, individuals can help shape the future of social media and digital engagement.

So, have you limited your time on social media or deleted some accounts entirely? What prompted your decision, and how are you managing it? We want to hear from you – share your story and let's start a conversation about our digital lives.

I think its pretty cool that people are starting to realize the importance of having a break from social media 🤯. I mean, we're living in an era where we can just swipe through our feeds all day and compare our lives to others. Its like, what even is the point? 😂 But seriously, taking a step back and focusing on real life is really refreshing.

I've been there too, deleting my social media accounts for a few months and it was amazing! I got back into playing video games, reading, and just chillin' with friends in person. Its not always easy to resist the temptation of social media, but its worth it.

I'm curious though, are we gonna be back to using social media all day every day? Or is this a permanent shift towards a more balanced digital life? 🤔 Only time will tell, but for now, I'm just gonna enjoy my newfound freedom and see where it takes me 😎

🤯 I'm so done with the drama and noise on those platforms! Like, I get it, social media is supposed to be fun, but honestly, 2 hours and 20 minutes a day feels like way too much to me. It's time for us to take back our lives and focus on what really matters – like that new hiking trail I wanna try out or the book I'm reading 📚🏞️.

And can we talk about how everyone's always trying to sell you something or tell you what to do? Like, no thanks! I'd rather just enjoy my own life without all the noise. 🙅‍♀️ Plus, have you seen your newsfeed lately? It's like, 80% ads and 20% actual content... ugh!

I'm loving this digital detox vibe though. Who needs FOMO when you can have a sense of calm and control over your online life? 😌

OMG I'm like totally confused about this 🤔... I mean, I love playing on my phone and scrolling through TikTok but at the same time, I know some people can get so addicted to it 😴... I don't really understand why people would want to delete social media though... won't that kinda be like, missing out on all your friends and what's happening in the world? 🤷‍♀️

I've been trying to limit my time on Instagram 'cause I was getting so tired of seeing all those ads 😒... but at the same time, it's hard when everyone around you is doing it too 👀... and what's with this "digital detox" thingy? Is that like a new trend or something? 🤔

I'm thinking maybe we're getting to that point where people just need a break 🙅‍♂️ from the constant stream of info and comparison on social media. It's crazy how much time we used to spend scrolling through feeds, and now it's like people are finding their own way again - rediscovering hobbies and interests outside of screens 📚🏞️. I'm all for taking a step back and re-evaluating our online habits. It'll be interesting to see if social media comes crawling back or if we've finally found a healthier balance 🤔

I'm so glad I saw this news 🙌! I've been saying it for ages, but people just didn't listen... we need to take breaks from social media! It's like, have you ever scrolled through your feeds and felt like you're wasting your life? 😴 Yeah, that's what happens to me all the time. And don't even get me started on the drama and negativity - it's like, why do I need that in my life?! 🙄

But seriously, I think this decline of social media usage is a game-changer for us. We're finally starting to realize that there's more to life than just our online presence. Like, have you tried reading a book or going on a hike without your phone? It's amazing! You can actually enjoy the moment and not feel like you're missing out on something.

And let's be real, social media is just a platform - it's up to us how we use it. If we want to delete our accounts or limit our time on them, that's our choice. But I think this shift is a sign of us taking back control of our digital lives and finding more balance in our lives.

I'm all for it! 👍

omg u guys I think its awesome that ppl r cuttin back on socials like I did like 6 months ago I was literally spendin hours scrollin thru my feeds every day it was like I was stuck in this never endin loop of drama and negativity but then I took a break and now I'm readin more, exercisin, and just chillin with friends its been so liberating 🤯

and yaaas to the concept of digital detox its like we need to take care of our mental health and not let socials control our lives anymore lets all be more mindful about what we're exposed to online and make conscious choices about how much time we spend on those platforms 💻

I'm low-key worried that ppl might go back to their old ways tho like, what if the next new thing comes along and they fall into the same trap again? 🤔 but for now im gonna keep enjoyin my newfound freedom and maybe even start a social media detox group with friends 🤜🤛

I'm loving this trend of people cutting back on social media 🤩. I've been there too, I deleted my Instagram account like 3 years ago and it was the best decision ever for my mental health 🙌. Now I use that time to read more books or try out new recipes in the kitchen 🍳. It's amazing how much of a difference it makes when you're not constantly glued to your screen 👀. And yeah, I can see why people would want to take a digital detox - all those endless scrolls and algorithm-driven feeds can be so draining 💤. But at the same time, I think social media will always come back around... maybe even stronger because of this shift 🔄. What about you, have you taken a break from social media or deleted accounts?

I'm kinda surprised by this trend 🤔. I mean, who doesn't love scrolling through their feeds and staying connected with friends and family? But at the same time, I can see why some people would want to take a step back from all that noise 😂. I've been guilty of mindlessly browsing social media for hours on end, and it's definitely not doing me any good.

I think the idea of digital detox is really interesting 📊. It's like our brains are wired to crave constant stimulation, and when we're not getting it from social media, we start to feel kinda lost 😕. But by taking a break from all that drama and noise, people can actually focus on what's important: their own lives and interests.

I've been trying to cut back on my social media usage myself 📊. It's not always easy, but I'm finding that I have more time for the things I love – like reading and playing guitar 🎸. And it's nice to feel like I'm in control of my own digital life, you know? 💻

omg i just thought of something, have u ever noticed how u can get lost in ur own thoughts when u're not scrolling thru social media for like an hour straight? 😂 it's crazy! i was thinking maybe people r just getting tired of all the curated stuff and wanna be back to being bored with themselves again lol... or maybe we r just realizing that there s more 2 life than just likes and followers? 🤔

Wow 💻📉 people need a break from all that online drama 🤯! I mean, 2 hours and 20 minutes is already way too much time spent on social media. I think it's awesome that everyone's taking back control of their digital lives and finding more meaningful ways to spend their time. Reading, hiking... those are all great hobbies that bring actual joy 😊. I deleted my Instagram account like two years ago and it was one of the best decisions I ever made 🙌! Now I have way more free time and I'm actually using it to learn new things or hang out with friends. Digital detox is the way to go! 👍

omg u guys i'm low-key relieved that ppl r cutting back on socials!!! like 2 hrs 20 mins less per day is crazy 🤯 i know some ppl r just trying 2 delete accounts cuz they're so over the drama and info overload but honestly i think it's more than that. people r finally realizing that socials r not as fulfilling as we thought they d be 😴 i'm loving the idea of digital detox tho - who needs all that FOMO when u can just chill and do ur own thing? 🤪

OMG, I'm loving this trend of people taking a break from social media 🤪💻! Like, who needs all that drama and comparison stress in their life, right? I've been there too, deleting my account was like, the best thing that ever happened to me 😂. Now I get to focus on Netflix binges and video games – it's a whole new level of happiness 🎮📺. But seriously, I think this is a great opportunity for people to rediscover what's important to them. Like, have you tried reading a book or taking up a hobby? Game changer, trust me! 😎
