A chilly winter weather pattern is shifting out of the region, but it's being replaced by another blast of frigid air that will bring extremely cold temperatures to much of the country. This new cold snap is expected to make its way into the Midwest and Northeast by Monday.
While Saturday's cold air may have made for some unpleasant weather, with wind chills reaching as low as the mid-20s in Chicago, the mid-30s in New York City, and mid-40s in Washington D.C., tonight will see temperatures rise slightly. However, it won't be long before another cold front brings a new wave of frigid air.
As this cold air settles in, temperatures will plummet to near freezing highs and below-zero lows across the Midwest and Northeast. This is especially true for areas from Montana and the Dakotas down to southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois, where at least 1 to 3 inches of snow can be expected by Sunday morning.
But it's not all bad news - the West Coast will start to warm up with some spots potentially breaking daily record highs this weekend. In contrast, the Rockies from Idaho and Montana down to Colorado and Utah are in for a snow-filled weekend, with most areas seeing more than a foot of snow by Sunday.
As the cold air moves east, it will bring some lingering icy conditions to parts of the Midwest and Northeast on Saturday morning. However, these conditions should clear up later in the day as temperatures rise slightly.
One thing is certain: this winter weather pattern has been unpredictable, but another blast of cold air is on its way - a welcome respite from the warmer temperatures we've seen recently.
