Volunteers Set Stage for Spectacular Opening Ceremony at San Siro Stadium

In just a few days, the 2026 Winter Olympics will kick off in Milan's iconic San Siro stadium with a bang. While Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli are among the A-list performers, it's not the stars of the stage that will take center stage โ€“ but rather over 1,200 volunteers, many of whom are students at Italy's prestigious La Scala opera house.

Rehearsals have been underway in a heated white tent adjacent to San Siro, with NBC News being told to keep their cameras hidden from view. "We want it to be a secret until the show," explained Federica Moscheni, communication manager for Balich Wonder Studio, the event management company behind the ceremony. The volunteers will perform alongside professional actors and dancers, but the majority are amateurs who have been working tirelessly to master their choreography.

Among them is Ariel Fuchs, 25, a software engineer from California who has been living in Milan for over a year. "San Siro is such an incredible stadium," she exclaimed, still pinching herself after hearing about her role in the ceremony. "I went there to watch some soccer games, so to actually be on the field is such a crazy feeling. I'm a little bit nervous but also really excited โ€“ we've all worked super hard, so I think it will all come together."

The numbers behind this production are staggering: 1,400 costumes, 1,500 pairs of shoes, and over 480 people working behind the scenes to create the original soundtrack and prepare the elaborate makeup and hair designs. The ceremony is being hailed as the "biggest show on earth," with creative director Lulu Helbeck promising an event that will be seen by audiences around the world, from Africa to America to Europe.

For one night only, these volunteers will take their place alongside some of the biggest names in entertainment, performing for a live audience of 60,000 at San Siro and hundreds of millions more watching worldwide.

I'm low-key hyped about this! I mean, can you imagine seeing Mariah Carey & Andrea Bocelli perform live at the iconic San Siro stadium? ๐Ÿคฉ But what's really amazing is those 1,200+ volunteers, mostly students from La Scala opera house, who are going to make it happen.
