Bigger cruise ships coming to Manhattan's West Side under new piers plan

Manhattan's West Side is set for a massive transformation as officials unveil plans to revamp the aging Manhattan Cruise Terminal. The city Economic Development Corporation (EDC) has proposed a multi-billion-dollar overhaul, designed to accommodate some of the world's largest passenger ships.

Under the new plan, the cruise terminal would undergo significant renovations, including the construction of new buildings and the replacement of century-old timbers. This would enable the terminals to handle three ships simultaneously, each carrying up to 8,000 passengers - nearly double the current capacity of two vessels capable of holding around 4,000 people.

Proponents argue that this upgrade is a major boon for the city's tourism industry, which would benefit from increased capacity and improved infrastructure. However, environmental concerns are also being addressed with new electrical infrastructure designed to reduce pollution caused by ships idling in the river. This includes the installation of shore power to minimize emissions.

Additionally, the plan includes pedestrian walkways and other measures aimed at managing the influx of tourists marching from the waterfront into Midtown. While officials have expressed enthusiasm for the project, no timeline has been provided, and a cost estimate remains uncertain. The EDC acknowledges that taxpayers will ultimately bear some of the burden.

Community leaders have long advocated for more sustainable practices at the terminal, including the adoption of shore power and the allocation of funds to address traffic congestion in the area. While progress is being made on these fronts, concerns remain about the impact of increased cruise ship activity on local residents and businesses.

As the proposal moves forward, it will require approval from multiple levels of government, including federal agencies with jurisdiction over the waterway. The long-term benefits of this project are uncertain, but one thing is clear: Manhattan's West Side is ready for a major transformation.

😐 This whole idea about revamping the cruise terminal just feels like more tourists clogging up our already overcrowded waterfront. I mean, have we really thought this through? Like, how's the city gonna deal with all those extra people spilling into Midtown? πŸ€” It sounds like they're just trying to make a quick buck off of this tourist boom without considering the real consequences on our community. We need more sustainable solutions than just throwing some new buildings and electrical infrastructure at the problem. πŸ’Έ

πŸš’πŸ’° gotta say, this whole cruise terminal revamp thing seems like a double-edged sword to me πŸ—‘οΈ. On the one hand, increased capacity and improved infrastructure could bring in some serious cash for the city πŸ’Έ, but on the other hand, I'm worried about the environmental impact 🌎 and how it'll affect local residents and businesses πŸ˜•. Shore power is a good start, but we need to make sure that's not just a Band-Aid solution πŸ€•. And what about the long-term benefits? Will it really be worth the tax burden on taxpayers? πŸ€‘ Need more info before I can give this one two thumbs up πŸ‘ or down πŸ‘Ž

OMG 🀯, I'm like totally stoked about the plans to revamp the cruise terminal on the West Side of Manhattan! 😎 It's about time they did something about that aging infrastructure, right? πŸ’‘ The idea of handling three massive ships at once is crazy talk – 8,000 passengers each is wild! 🀯 And I'm all for increasing capacity and improving infrastructure to boost tourism. But let's get real, we gotta keep an eye on those environmental concerns too 🌎. Shore power and reducing pollution are the way to go, imo. πŸ’– I mean, who wants more cruise ships spewing out emissions in our beautiful harbor? 🚫 Not me, that's for sure! πŸ˜‚ As long as they're addressing traffic congestion and tourist management, I'm cool with it πŸ‘. Now let's see if those community leaders can hold the EDC accountable and make sure this project is done right πŸ€”.

Manhattan's about to get a serious upgrade 🚧πŸ’ͺ! I'm all for progress and innovation, especially when it comes to our city's tourism scene. The new cruise terminal plans would not only bring in more revenue but also improve the overall experience for visitors. However, I do hope they're thinking about those of us who live nearby πŸ‘₯. We've got enough traffic congestion as it is, let alone with even more tourists pouring in πŸš—πŸ’¨. Still, if they can make some of these upgrades environmentally friendly and sustainable, that's a win-win for everyone πŸŒŽπŸ’š. Fingers crossed it all works out! 😊

ooh I'm soooo excited about this 🀩! A massive overhaul of the Manhattan Cruise Terminal would be amazing! just think of all the more tourists we could get in NYC!!! πŸ’– I know some people are worried about environmental concerns, but I think those new electrical infrastructure and shore power things will totally reduce pollution 🌎. And can you imagine having three ships docked at once? it's gonna be so cool! πŸš£β€β™€οΈ pedestrian walkways too? that sounds like a great idea to manage all the tourists πŸ™Œ let's get this done ASAP πŸ’ͺ

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s wild to see how much money is being thrown around for this terminal revamp πŸ€‘. Like, 3 ships at the same time? It’s already crazy busy out there during peak season, can you imagine when they open up shop with even more tourists? And what about the noise and disruption to local residents? I get that the tourism industry needs a boost, but can’t we find ways to grow without sacrificing our quality of life too much? πŸ€” And isn’t it ironic that they're installing shore power to reduce emissions, while still planning for three massive ships? 🌊

I think its gonna be super awesome to see the new cruise terminal in manhattan!!! 🚒πŸ’₯ they're making some great changes like shore power and walkways to help with traffic congestion... that sounds so much better than idling ships polluting our water πŸ’¦πŸŒŠ i'm not sure about the timeline or cost tho, hope it doesn't break the bank for us taxpayers πŸ€‘
