Bragg wants to ban 3D-printed guns in New York and across the US

New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg is set to push a nationwide crackdown on 3D-printed firearms, building on legislation he's promoted in recent years. Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled the proposal during her State of the State address, which would require 3D printers sold in New York to be equipped with technology that blocks unlicensed production of firearms and gun parts. Possessing, selling, or distributing digital blueprints for printing illegal guns would also become a crime.

Bragg aims to blanket the market with this legislation, saying "we don't then have to do the enforcement cases." He believes some companies are taking steps in the right direction by implementing machine learning tools that prevent printers from producing firearms. However, Bragg emphasizes that these voluntary efforts won't be enough if the proposed restrictions become law.

This push is part of Bragg's broader strategy to target the systems that enable gun violence, not just individual offenders. He compares the proposed restrictions to existing limits on home printers, which can't produce counterfeit currency. The effort is a response to the growing concern over ghost guns – untraceable firearms made at home without serial numbers.

According to authorities, the number of recovered ghost guns nationwide rose sharply between 2017 and 2021, rivaling the "iron pipeline" – the flow of illegal guns from other states. Bragg's office has targeted those who sell plastic weapons and gun parts, and he shared a case where investigators discovered teenagers learned to print ghost guns through YouTube videos.

Bragg is also planning to target bitcoin-related money laundering, although he declined to provide details. The proposal faces resistance from 3D printer manufacturers and the state's gun lobby, with representatives not yet commenting on the request for comment.

omg i cant believe its finally happening!! lol the gov is like for real tho. these new restrictions make so much sense considering how out of control ghost guns are getting. its crazy to think that kids as young as teens can be like "hey i wanna print a gun" and then just do it 🀯 i mean we all knew this was gonna happen eventually, but still... what about the tech companies tho? shouldnt they be doing more to stop these illicit 3d printed guns? πŸ€”

I think its a no-brainer πŸ€”, you gotta crack down on these ghost guns ASAP. Its like, we all agree that guns should be regulated, but then comes this loophole where people are just printing their own and it's getting out of control 🚫. The fact that Bragg is pushing for this nationwide crackdown shows he's serious about tackling the problem from all angles πŸ’ͺ. And yeah, its not just about individual offenders, its about breaking down these whole systems that enable gun violence πŸ”’. I mean, the number of ghost guns recovered has been going up and it's like, we can't just sit around waiting for people to get hurt πŸ€•. The tech companies are already taking steps in the right direction with their machine learning tools, but its not enough πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. This legislation is a step in the right direction and I hope it gets passed soon πŸ’¨

omg i cant believe this 🀯 so like what if ppl wanna make guns 4 themselves but they dont have access 2 real ones? wont thats 2 good 4 them? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ also wut about all the ppl who r against 3d printing cuz of safety concerns? isnt that a thing 2? πŸ’‘ this ghost gun thingy is wild, i mean its like having 2 set of rules depending on if u get caught or not πŸš«πŸ’Ό and bitcoin money laundering sounds super shady, what kinda info do they wanna keep secret tho? πŸ’Έ

So this guy Bragg is trying to take a stand against these ghost guns that are being made at home without any serial numbers 🀯. I think it's about time someone did something about it! Those untraceable firearms are super scary and can be used by anyone, including bad guys 🚫. It's not just about individual offenders, but also about the systems that enable gun violence, you know? Like how these companies are already starting to use machine learning tools to prevent printers from making guns, but it's still not enough if the law becomes a reality πŸ’».

I'm not sure about this proposal, though. I mean, 3D printer manufacturers and the state's gun lobby are all against it πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. But Bragg is determined to make it happen, saying that we don't have to deal with enforcement cases if everyone just uses these new technologies πŸ”’.

The thing is, bitcoin-related money laundering is also a big issue now πŸ’Έ. Bragg wants to tackle that too, but he's not giving any details 🀐. I guess only time will tell if this proposal goes through and how effective it'll be 😬. One thing's for sure, though - ghost guns are a major problem, and we need someone like Bragg to take on the issue πŸ’ͺ!

I'm thinking... this whole thing got me wondering, what's the real cost of 'fighting' against ghost guns? I mean, are we really just trying to control the symptoms or addressing the root issue? We're talking about people who are desperate, who feel like they have no other options. And then we create more restrictions, more laws... is that gonna help them or just push them further underground?

And what about the tech companies? They're already taking steps in the right direction with their machine learning tools, but are they doing it out of altruism or because they want to stay ahead of the game? I mean, if we're not careful, we might end up creating a black market for legitimate gun parts too...

And bitcoin-related money laundering... that's just another layer of complexity. Are we really sure we can control that? It's like trying to hold water in our hands... it's always slipping away.

idk why we need another law to deal with ghost guns πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ its like they're already a thing of the past... or should i say, of the future? lol anyway, i guess it's good that NY is taking initiative, kinda like how some companies are trying to be responsible and whatnot πŸ™. but seriously, wont this just push 3D printing tech further underground and create even more problems for law enforcement? πŸ€” also, isnt bitcoin already all about anonymity? lol just thinkin out loud πŸ’

πŸ€” I'm kinda worried about this new law... like, what's going to happen when it gets enforced? 🚫 They're trying to stop people from printing guns at home, but how are they gonna make sure nobody just finds a way around it? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I mean, we've seen these 'ghost gun' things and how easy it is for people to just 3D print their own guns... it's kinda scary. 😬 What if some companies are really good at finding ways to hack the system? πŸ’» And what about all those YouTube videos that let kids learn how to make ghost guns? πŸ“Ί How are they gonna stop that? πŸ‘€

I'm telling you, this whole thing about 3D-printed firearms is getting out of hand πŸ’»πŸ”«. I mean, Bragg's trying to blanket the market, but what's next? Are we gonna start regulating everything that can be printed at home? It feels like a slippery slope πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ.

I get why he wants to crack down on ghost guns - they're basically untraceable and that's crazy 🚨. But this legislation sounds like it's targeting the wrong problem. I mean, what about all the legit gun owners who just wanna tinker with their printers? Are they gonna be forced to delete all their firearm files or something? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

And what about the voluntary efforts by companies that are already using machine learning tools to prevent printer production of firearms? Doesn't Bragg's plan assume that everyone's just gonna ignore them and keep on printing πŸ”΄?

I'm not saying it's all bad, but this whole thing feels like a solution in search of a problem πŸ€”. We need to figure out how to address the root causes of gun violence rather than just throwing more regulations at it πŸ’‘.

so this is crazy 🀯, like a whole nationwide crackdown on 3d-printed guns is being pushed by Alvin Bragg in NY... it feels like he's trying to fix one problem but might end up causing another 😬. i mean who decides what's good for us, right? πŸ™„ anyway, the ghost gun thing is wild, all these untraceable guns just popping up everywhere 🚫. and now bitcoin laundering too... sounds like Bragg's office is trying to take down the whole dark web vibe πŸ”. 3d-printer manufacturers are already getting upset tho, wonder how this whole thing plays out πŸ‘€

I'm low-key worried about this new law πŸ€”πŸ’‘. Like, I get it, ghost guns are a big deal, but what's gonna happen to all the legit 3D printing companies that aren't even making firearms? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ They're already working on machine learning stuff to prevent unwanted prints. Do we really need more red tape? πŸ“ And what about the black market guys who'll just find ways to circumvent this? It's like, they're always one step ahead πŸ˜’. I'm all for reducing gun violence, but let's not make it harder for people who aren't doing anything wrong πŸ’―.
