Brahms: Symphony No 1, Tragic Overture album review – Petrenko and the Berliners give Brahms organic momentum

Kirill Petrenko and the Berlin Philharmonic's Meiningen Court Orchestra bring a fresh vitality to Brahms's First Symphony, coupled with the Tragic Overture, in this latest release from the Berliner Philharmoniker label. The performance, captured live at the renowned Philharmonie, showcases Petrenko's thoughtful approach to the composer's works.

The conductor has opted to use the original scores marked up by Brahms himself, adding an air of authenticity to the interpretation. While some might view this approach as overly directive, it ultimately yields a momentum that is difficult to resist, with a pronounced flexibility in the ensemble playing that brings out the intricate details of the score.

One notable aspect of this performance is the balance, which remains impeccable throughout the disc. However, there are moments where the solos seem overemphasized by the recording engineers, detracting slightly from the overall cohesion of the music.

The Tragic Overture, meanwhile, bursts to life with dramatic urgency, its expertly crafted arc propelling the listener on a thrilling ride. While it's recorded in an acoustic that seems more favorable than the symphony, this ultimately avoids the problem of a woolly bass line that can sometimes plague Petrenko's interpretation.

Overall, this is a compelling addition to the Berlin Philharmonic's discography, one that showcases the ensemble's skill and commitment to exploring the classical canon.

omg i love when orchestras are all about staying true to the composers original work 🎵! Kirill Petrenko's approach to Brahms is so refreshing - it's like he's giving us a masterclass in interpretation 📚💫 and that balance throughout the symphony is EVERYTHING 🔊 it's crazy how some solos can get a bit lost in the mix, but overall this disc is straight fire 💥. The Tragic Overture though? wow, that's some intense stuff 😲!

🎵 I've always been a fan of live recordings, there's something special about capturing a performance in its purest form 🌟. This new release from the Berliner Philharmoniker label is definitely worth checking out, Petrenko's approach to Brahms is unique and really brings out the character in the music 💡. I love how they used the original scores marked up by Brahms himself, it adds a level of authenticity that you just can't replicate with modern notation 📝. The only thing that threw me off was the solos - sometimes they felt a bit overpowered by the recording engineers 😊. Still, the overall balance is spot on and the Tragic Overture is pure dynamite 💥!

I'm loving the new Brahms release by the Berlin Philharmonic! Kirill Petrenko really gets into the groove with his thoughtful approach to the scores 🎶. I mean, using the original markings from Brahms himself is a genius move - it adds so much authenticity to the performance. And can we talk about that balance? It's like they're floating on air 🌟. My only minor quibble would be the recording engineers playing it safe with some of the solos... but honestly, it's not enough to take away from the overall magic of the disc 🔮. Petrenko and the Berlin Philharmonic are a match made in heaven - can't wait to see what they do next! 👏

They really need to work on those solos. Like, I get it, Brahms is all about grandeur and drama, but some of these overemphasized moments feel like they're trying too hard to make an impression 🎵😐. It's a good thing the rest of the orchestra can carry the load, 'cause that's where the real magic happens 🙌

I'm still waiting for them to get it right lol 🙄 I mean, using the original scores marked up by Brahms himself? That just reeks of overthinking if you ask me 😒 It's like they're trying too hard to be authentic instead of trusting their own instincts as musicians. And don't even get me started on that Tragic Overture - it sounds way more polished than it should, like they spent way too much time in the studio tweaking every little detail 🤯 I mean, can't they just let the music breathe for once? 👎

I just listened to this Brahms release and I'm loving it 🎵! Kirill Petrenko really gets what Brahms was going for with his symphonies. The way he's using those original scores is super cool - it feels like you're hearing the composer himself conduct the orchestra. My only gripe is that some of the solos sound a bit overdone on the recording, but I guess that's just part of the trade-off when they want to get every note in there 😊. The Tragic Overture though... wow, it gives me chills! Petrenko really knows how to whip up some drama with that piece 🎶

just listened to brahms's first symphony with Kirill Petrenko and it's like he's breathing new life into the old classic 🎵💨 this approach of using original scores marked up by brahms himself is really interesting, gives me chills when i hear those tiny details in the music coming through. only thing that would make it 100% perfect for me is if they toned down the recording engineers a notch, some solos feel kinda overpowered 🎧😐

I'm loving this new release from the Berlin Philharmoniker label 🎵💥! Kirill Petrenko's approach to Brahms's First Symphony is so refreshing, it feels like a breath of fresh air 💨. Using the original scores marked up by Brahms himself adds an authenticity that can't be beat 🔒. I mean, who doesn't love the feeling of hearing music played exactly how the composer intended? 🤓 Of course, some might say it's too directive, but for me, it just means you get a more cohesive and engaging performance 🎶. The balance is top-notch throughout, but sometimes those solos can feel like they're drowning out the rest of the orchestra 🌊. Still, that Tragic Overture is pure magic ✨! It's so exciting to hear Petrenko and his ensemble really bring it to life 💥. Can't wait to give this one a spin on repeat! 🎵

omg u guys i just listened to the new brahms symphony with petrenko and it was SOOO good!!! 🤩 i love how they used the original scores marked up by brahms himself, it makes it feel so authentic and real... but like i'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing? does anyone else think he's being too controlling as a conductor? 😬 and yeah the solos do sound kinda overemphasized in some parts 🎶 but overall it's still SO COOL to hear brahms's music performed with such passion and energy 💥

omg i just listened to Kirill Petrenko's new Brahms release with the Meiningen Court Orchestra 🤩 and i am HOOKED! i love how he uses the original scores marked up by Brahms himself, it gives such a cool authenticity to the music 💡. i was a bit worried that the solos would be overpowered by the recording engineers but nope, they're still totally balanced 😌. the Tragic Overture is just insane though 🤯 i love how it builds and builds until you're right on the edge of your seat... i'm actually considering getting this vinyl ASAP 🎵

Man, I'm loving the new Brahms release 🎵💫! Kirill Petrenko really knows how to bring out the best in those symphonies... reminds me of Leonard Bernstein with the New York Phil, you know? The way he balances the dynamics is spot on - not too overpowering like some other conductors I've heard. But, gotta say, those solos could've been more subtle if they were recorded right... feels like it's a minor quibble, tho 🤔. Still, it's such an exhilarating ride with the Tragic Overture! Those Berlin Philharmonic guys are killing it as usual

I'm not sure I'm sold on using the original scores marked up by Brahms himself... it feels like it's trying too hard to recreate a "period" sound? Like, yeah, we get it, Brahms was all about precision, but isn't that just a product of his time? Don't you think Petrenko could've interpreted the score in a way that still honored Brahms's intent without being so... rigid?

omg I'm totally in love with the way Kirill Petrenko brings out the emotions in Brahms's First Symphony 🤩 he has such a special connection with the music it really comes alive under his baton 💖 the Tragic Overture is like a rollercoaster ride of feels, I was literally on the edge of my seat the whole time 🎢 I do wish they'd toned down the solo bits slightly though, it's like the recording engineers were trying to make them stand out too much 😐 but overall this disc is pure magic ✨

😊 I just listened to Kirill Petrenko's latest release with the Meiningen Court Orchestra, and man, it's like a breath of fresh air! The way he approached Brahms's First Symphony is so thoughtful and nuanced, you can really feel the music breathe. The original scores marked up by Brahms himself add this level of authenticity that makes you wonder what the composer would've wanted. It's not always easy to balance soloists with the rest of the ensemble, but I think they nailed it...mostly 🤔. There are a few moments where the recording engineers might've overdone it, but overall, this is a killer disc! The Tragic Overture, though...whoa, that's some intense stuff 😲!

I loved the new Brahms symphony release from the Berliner Philhariker label 😊! I think Kirill Petrenko is really good at making classical music feel fresh and exciting again. He uses the original notes that Brahms wrote himself, which makes it sound super authentic and special. The way the orchestra plays together is just amazing - you can hear all the tiny details in the music. But sometimes, when there's a soloist, I feel like they're getting too much attention and it takes away from the rest of the band 🎵. Still, overall, this symphony is really great and I'm so glad the Berlin Philharmonic is putting out new music! 👍

idk if using brahms's original scores really adds much to the performance...sounds like just another way for the conductor to assert control 🤔. also, i'm not sure about these "original scores" being marked up by brahms himself - where's the proof? seems like a convenient excuse to sound more authoritative.

I gotta say, I'm loving this new Brahms release by Kirill Petrenko and the Berlin Philharmonic... 🎵 The way they've brought out the intricate details of the score is just incredible - it's like you can hear every note and nuance coming through loud and clear. And that balance? Unbelievable, it really is. The only thing that's a bit of a letdown for me is when I listen to the solos, they do sound a tad overemphasized at times... but overall, this disc is just fantastic! It's always awesome to see a conductor take such care and attention to using the original scores - it really makes all the difference in how the music feels.
